Coming from an outside viewpoint that isn't especially invested in the theory nor have feelings about it one way or the other, I don't personally think Sera is Andruil's vessel. I also don't think Solas is Fen'Harel's, but with him, it's no doubt partly because I want him to be the pure and true Dread Wolf. Mythal's circumstance is unique, and Flemythal implies to was no easy feat what she accomplished. If they did do it, it would be different from Mythal's circumstance. Again, though, I just don't think that's what they're doing. Sera is undoubtedly special, but if they make her the vessel of Andruil, and Solas Fen'Harel's, then it's going to wear off as them rehashing old ideas out of lack of creativity and bad writing. That just seems lazy to me. Mind you, they could have a perfectly valid reason if they chose to take that route, but I just don't know. They would need a damn good one, I think. Maybe Sera is Andruil's descendant, or something else entirely. I don't know. Could the Creators even have children in the sense we're familiar with, I wonder? Who knows? I certainly don't. My knowledge is limited and I don't pretend to know much of anything. This simply my non-invested and impersonal impression of the whole thing.

As for Carver and Bethany, I have feelings. Part of me wanted Carver as my Hawke's living sibling (also F!Mage Hawke X Fenris looked to be a fun romance to play), but my first playthrough was a rogue Hawke, and I just can't now. Hawke is and shall always be a rogue to me, no matter other playthroughs of other classes I do. Plus, I think it's natural that whatever sibling you had live on your first playthrough is the one you'll be most attached to. That's how it is for me, anyway. I love Carver, but I'm terribly attached to Bethany, too. I think Bioware did an excellent job on both of them.

Edited: Grammar, because phone.

This is basically how I feel about the issue of vessels. With all these theories about people being secret gods (Sera, Sandal, Schmooples II probably) it's starting to feel like you can't swing a stick in Thedas without hitting some ancient deity. At that point the whole 'X is a vessel' thing would be rather lazy writing.

Exactly. Plus, a character actually being the ancient deity rather than its vessel packs more an oomph to me. But if all of these gods and special snowflake beings are just running around Thedas, be it through a vessel or their own physical manifestation, I think it would get ridiculous. We have Flemythal, Solas-Fen'Harel, ancient magisters - one of which believes he can actually become a god. Not to mention whatever or whoever this OGS is. Let's not even get into the debate of what qualifies as a god in the first place, because Quizzy could just as easily be a candidate. I don't know. With the right reason - whatever that may be - they could pull it off, I suppose. It just wouldn't be easy, and they would need one hell of a mind-boggling and believable excuse, but more likely than not they would risk cries of "Laziness!", "Bad writing!", and "Are you that sapped of creativity and ideas?". But, what do I know? Eh heh. Very little. My theory crafting leaves much to be desired, I'm afraid.

Yeah, well, first: I am also not fond of this. It would bore me to no end if Sera was Andruil.

However, in theory it's not ridiculous. We had 5 Blights, meaning 5 OGS were aroused. Where are they now? The last one might be in Kieran (or wherever it went if there was no Kieran), but where are the other 4? So technically speaking we have 4 OGS somewhere in Thedas. Unless one assumes that a soul dies because its borrowed body was slain, and I just somehow don't believe that. When Morrigan explains the Dark Ritual she already says the OGS will leave the body and jump into the next most appropriate one. It surely will do this in any case. And we were never told what the "next body" could possibly be.

That's true. I can agree with that. I realize I only thought of and mentioned what was specifically personal for the games' protagonists, in regard to who they contacted, aware of it or otherwise, and wasn't thinking much about ones in history. That's my bad, sorry. Hopefully what I just said is coherent and makes sense...

I, too, do not think the OGS souls are actually destroyed, although the possibilities of what manner they continue to exist are numerous. I also think it's quite possible that, Warden performing Dark Ritual or not, Urthemiel's OGS soul could be hopping around still, and Flemythal may even have it. Who knows. Too many unanswered questions, I say. I also should probably reword my post with, not so much ridiculous, as just repetitive. But at the same time, I do agree with you that it wouldn't be terribly far-fetched with everything we do already have running around. I enjoy the OGS story bit, which is why it's part of my canon worldstate. I'm hoping that it still plays a relative important role in spite of not being exactly present in everyone's worldstate.

God, what a mess though from a plot and story-telling perspective. You end having to to make a flow chart about where the hot-potato soul is instead of focusing on the more "humanizing" aspects of the gods.  There is a reason Solas is hanging out with the Inqusition - it's to show that he's a person...much like anybody else.  We now know through Solas that the other gods were flawed, and at times awful people. The picture of these benevelant beings that was painted of them PRIOR to this game is now totally called into question.  This piece is far more interesting to me than any vessel, soul hopping funny business.

I'd sort of forgotten about the OGS. Are the others still floating around? Or did they die after encountering the wardens? To be honest, I hadn't put much thought into it, but I'd assumed that the wardens were responsible for killing archdemons because that was the only way to prevent the OGS from simply migrating to the nearest darkspawn and continuing with the blight. If that were the case then Kieran's OGS is the only one still floating around in the mortal realm. Either way, I don't think they'd just die.

Didn't someone theorise that the OGS went back to the Fade after the archdemon was slain? Was that part of Colonel's theory?

I'm more chill with the idea of OGS floating around than I am with everyone secretly being a vessel.

I find Bethany a very shallow character compared to Carver.  And I really do love playing mages.  In DAO I was a rogue!Tabris until I controlled Morrigan and fell in love with the class.  In DA2 it's my favourite class, favourite version of the story and favourite sibling.  Trust me, rival!Warden Carver + sarcastic Hawke is the best.  The relationship is pretty much Hawke trying to get Carver to lighten up and Carver being 'sister no.'  Then he grows up a ton and admits what an ass he was.  I think my favourite Carver/Hawke sibling moment is at the end of Fenris' recruitment.  Fenris immediately starts insulting Hawke's magic and Carver leaps in with a 'you have a problem with my sister, you have a problem with me.'  Anyone who thinks that Carver's problem is with magic is just not paying attention.   Carver doesn't hate magic, he hates Hawke putting herself in danger from the Templers by helping other mages.  He even makes it clear in early Act I that he wouldn't let the take Hawke to the Gallows alone.  If Templers are taking one of them in, they're taking them both even though he's not a mage.  Because he does love his sibling, even if he acts like a prat.

I just love Bethany to pieces. But everyone is going to have their favorite sibling. I know Carver grows up a lot, but I can't stand his grump. I got too much of that from my own brother growing up.  :P

And yes, I'm a Brit.

I love British accents! Can't hear them over the internet, but still...

EDIT: If you play on PC there's an unlock spell for mages, and a mod that backports the Manuals of Focus into DAO.  Means you can actually make Leliana and Zev useful and open locks without them.

That's cool. Unfortunately, no PC gaming for me.

I should probably point out that this thread is the first time I've actually taken a stab at seriously debating and crafting theories, outside of a few minor ones with my brother that are hardly adequate measure, and that it undoubtedly shows. I will be the first to attest to my limited knowledge, my low grade intelligence, and the fact that I'm likely going at this half blind. So I apologize for that in advance, and hope I haven't and don't end up upsetting or offending anyone. I'm new at this. I'm also a weird and an awkwardly shy person, so that may come into play as well.

Basically, I just want to make it clear that with whatever I have to say, I don't mean to offend, and I pray I don't, because I love you people and just want to enjoy the time with you.

Never apologize for it! As long as you're being somewhat polite and chill.  All is well.  And you don't seem the type to come in swinging wildly or bashing anyone else's opinion - frankly you're not saying anything that hasn't said before by others.  You missed the days of some of the more....uh...interesting theories.  It's calmed considerably since then.  So theorize away!

For the longest time, all the Brits I'd talk to were from the north of England (through gaming groups or other places) so I have a real soft spot for accents from up in various northern regions. I'm an American who can actually understand them. :P

Thank you. I definitely try to be polite and civil. I really, really don't like offending people, and so I try, but don't always succeed, in wording things with careful forethought. And oh, goodness. I can imagine. I think I've heard some passing mentions of a few of them. I actually wish I had arrived sooner so I could have witnesses it firsthand. I'm entertained easily, I'm afraid.

So. Solas. Here's a legitimate question: do you guys think the ancient, immortal elves' bodies stop aging prior to what we as humans would consider old age? Or do you think they'd get there eventually, but the process of physically aging would slow down massively as they approached it? Do we have any lore relevant stuff on this? Or do we ever see any very, very old looking immortal elves in any capacity? I'd like to know the rate of body ageing v.s. years lived. These fantasy mechanics interest me.

The whole concept of immortal things being born as infants always confuses me.  I have a tough time wrapping my head around the idea of a body that does the normal growing up thing and then just...stops doing it.  Does hair still grow?  Do they still have to cut their toenails?  Are they immune to change in every way or are they somehow magically renewed in a more-effective way than we mere mortals?  The Asari/Krogan thing makes more sense to me, with their body simply aging so slowly that they're still a teenager at 200.  At least the elves have uthenera to explain long stretches of not dying...

It might not be the best idea to bring genetics into a fantasy world, but it could provide some answers.

First of all I'd like to clarify that the process of aging isn't the same as growing up. The current theory proposes that aging is partly caused by the accumulation of DNA damages (mutations), which makes the cells less and less efficient. For elves to be immortal, they would need magnificent DNA repair mechanisms, because even at a low mutation rate the DNA damage accumulates and they would eventually die. And that can no longer be called immortality.

So, no mutations, no aging.

Nails/hair would probably grow, because it's not aging, it's a growth process.

Talking about genetics gets me really, REALLY excited. I hope I haven't bored anyone to death.

..I have thought about the genetics of immortal elves more than I dare to admit.
