Talking about genetics gets me really, REALLY excited. I hope I haven't bored anyone to death.

..I have thought about the genetics of immortal elves more than I dare to admit.

No. Seriously. More of this.

My main struggle when writing fantasy is that I can't help but try to reconcile it with actual science.

I'll never get bored of hearing about science as applied to fantasy worlds.

So the question becomes... do I spend time playing Inquisition or working on my fanfic...?

Solas or Fenris?

damn.

The 'both' gif is appropriate here.  Anyone care to help out?

That's true. I can agree with that. I realize I only thought of and mentioned what was specifically personal for the games' protagonists, in regard to who they contacted, aware of it or otherwise, and wasn't thinking much about ones in history. That's my bad, sorry. Hopefully what I just said is coherent and makes sense...

Please... just... no. Nothing bad, no sorry, no "I wasn't thinking". ;)

I am just throwing in random thoughts and point out possibilities. But it does not mean anything in the end. I avoid thinking whenever I can, so even if I point out something, that doesn't mean it's actually relevant or would pass an evaluation.

God, what a mess though from a plot and story-telling perspective.

I can agree with your post. But I personally think that they have changed their own story quite a bit throughout the games. So maybe they will give us some neat explanation for why Morrigan's ritual was complete bogus to begin with and just drop it.

I'd sort of forgotten about the OGS. Are the others still floating around? Or did they die after encountering the wardens? To be honest, I hadn't put much thought into it, but I'd assumed that the wardens were responsible for killing archdemons because that was the only way to prevent the OGS from simply migrating to the nearest darkspawn and continuing with the blight. If that were the case then Kieran's OGS is the only one still floating around in the mortal realm. Either way, I don't think they'd just die.

Didn't someone theorise that the OGS went back to the Fade after the archdemon was slain? Was that part of Colonel's theory?

Short answer: we don't know. The Wardens know **** about the OGS or taint or blights. They are basically like a blind man trying to finish a paint-by-numbers somebody else started, without knowing the motif or which side is up. The Wardens don't even know why them slaying an archdemon prevents anything. They just do it because somebody once told them to try that and they don't know anything better to do. Also they haven't yet excelled at thinking. They are often just thugs who happened to survive the joining. They slay the archdemon and the Blight ends. Bingo bongo. I didn't get the impression they ever thought much about what happens after that.

In the end, everything is possible. What we are told is that the OGS will hop into the nearest suitable body, and to prevent this being a Darkspawn (who will then carry it away somewhere safe), a Warden must land the killing blow. But we are never told what happens next. So the Warden has the soul and dies in the act because... his body can't handle it or something. But what then? The soul just dies? Or does it say "Ah no, first the dragon is killed and now this guy just dies; this is a fucked up game, I ain't gonna play no more"? I find the theory lacking. So I assume they just kept a few information from us and there is some place the soul will go. Might as well be Florida.

I don't know if they go back to the Fade, I have not yet heard this theory, but I don't see why they would (or, if they can do that, why they would prefer hopping to another body in the first place instead of going back "home") or what this would be good for or what evidence supports it.

Madrar knew an awful lot about OGS. She could have explained it all. I miss her.

I will be the first to attest to my limited knowledge, my low grade intelligence, and the fact that I'm likely going at this half blind. So I apologize for that in advance, and hope I haven't and don't end up upsetting or offending anyone. I'm new at this. I'm also a weird and an awkwardly shy person, so that may come into play as well.

Basically, I just want to make it clear that with whatever I have to say, I don't mean to offend, and I pray I don't, because I love you people and just want to enjoy the time with you.

Okay, first rule in the fight club: don't apologize in the fight club. We react really poorly to politeness here. Usually we keep flinging insults at each other until a mod appears or somebody deletes his account.

Second, I never read anything. I don't know the codex entries, I don't keep flow charts, damn, I don't even think if I can help it. The only things I know about lore are what NPCs tell me or what I can see in the game. I am as educated as a cucumber and I have basically nothing of relevance to say. Hasn't ever stopped me from spamming.

You're cool, stop being so insecure.

You should have been here earlier. So many days we wasted with page-long theorizing about the immortality, the nature of the taint/blight, its effects on the body, the song and how it can manipulate the thinking etc. etc. When the scientists around would write so much that a lot of people were really annoyed. I guess you would have loved it.

This is the part that was confusing me, because I couldn't quite figure out why hopping into a Warden who also dies would do ****. Couldn't it just go to another darkspawn after that? Or does it, as you say, get annoyed that no one is playing fair and skip town to get hammered on long island iced teas or whatever?

Buuuuut, turns out we just don't know. Hmm.

I find myself at an impasse. I can't do any more plays of DA:I as I've burned out. Same with the Dragin Age franchise in general, at least until new stuff is out. Decided instead to make a Fenris companion for Skyrim. Got the audio clips and stuff in place, just need some feedback on the tattoo I've made. I'm happy with the front but the back just doesn't seem right. Any useful ideas from you talented folks?

Spoiler

The explanation was that the old god soul wouldn't be able to fit in a body that already has a soul and that the two souls would collide and destroy each other. Presumably the Morrigan's ritual works because the gods soul can pass into a recently fertilised egg.

Ahhhhh. Thank you. <3

That makes sense. I guess. So, presumably, the only OGS floating around Thedas at the moment is the one that Keiran had since the Wardens have been destroying the rest?

It might not be the best idea to bring genetics into a fantasy world, but it could provide some answers.

First of all I'd like to clarify that the process of aging isn't the same as growing up. The current theory proposes that aging is partly caused by the accumulation of DNA damages (mutations), which makes the cells less and less efficient. For elves to be immortal, they would need magnificent DNA repair mechanisms, because even at a low mutation rate the DNA damage accumulates and they would eventually die. And that can no longer be called immortality.

So, no mutations, no aging.

Nails/hair would probably grow, because it's not aging, it's a growth process.

Talking about genetics gets me really, REALLY excited. I hope I haven't bored anyone to death.

..I have thought about the genetics of immortal elves more than I dare to admit.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I've heard theories that youthfulness also has something to do with our body's ability to produce growth hormones. After a certain age, our body stops producing it or produces less, which leads to aging. A body's ability to continue production would reduce or even potentially stop aging, at least physical signs.

You're making me have feels for Carver again. My grumpy baby brother. <3

That's what I'm here for - to be the cause of Carver feels.  Speaking of which - Red. Lyrium. Carver.  As soon as I heard that headcanon I was so glad my little bro is canonically a Warden.

Then Here Lies the Abyss makes me think that the Templer path might be for the best after all.  Dammit, Dragon Age.  Stop making it so difficult to protect Carver!

I just love Bethany to pieces. But everyone is going to have their favorite sibling. I know Carver grows up a lot, but I can't stand his grump. I got too much of that from my own brother growing up.  :P

I love British accents! Can't hear them over the internet, but still...

That's cool. Unfortunately, no PC gaming for me.

There's just something about Bethany that caused me to never connected with her the same way I did Carver.

I don't have a very interesting accent, I'm afriad.

The MoF mod is probably the one mod I couldn't play the game without.  I had no idea Zev could actually be useful until I had that.  And respeccing Sten gives his missing specialisation point. Finally I can get my Reaver/Templer Qunari.

So we've debating about the "godhood" of the elven gods, and that El Dorado gif got me thinking... what if it just went something like this:

Somehow it's not hard to picture Solas in this...

EDIT: Now I have a need for a drawing of Solas in El Dorado grab

I actually read these posts when I was still catching up after discovering this thread. I was about a hundred pages behind at the time and didn't want to dig up an old topic.

Since threads tend to move in circles, I always knew this day would come. I have been preparing.

Growth hormones could potentially slow down aging, but they are definitely not powerful enough to stop it.

IF I can draw it... I am willing to make the attempt...

Side note, don't google image search "Solas naked." I was trying to find the image of his naked computer model so I could get the chest right, and "Solas model" didn't work, and I didn't have safe search on.

So much porn, and not the kind I wanted. Although this is pretty hot. NSFW

Did find the model image I was looking for, though.  <_<
