The current fanfic I am writing has short chapters, but I plan on posting them in chucks, like 5 chapters together. I also don't plan on posting them until the whole story is finished.

Also..I'm thinking I might not post it at all since I have a huge self esteem problem when it comes to my writing and no one has commented on anything I have posted before so I'm starting to think I'm a horrible writer and people don't like my stuff.

But...that might just be because I've only posted my stories on Deviant Art and Sable said I should post on a bunch of different places.

And I'm rambling..sorry.

I know it definitely feels that way sometimes, but a lack of comments doesn't necessarily mean people don't like your work: I hardly ever comment on anything on DA, even if I absolutely love it. Unless someone specifically asks me to, or it's a person who comments on lots of stuff I upload so I extend the same courtesy, I usually just stick with fave-ing... because I have no idea what to say half the time XD It takes a lot of work for me to properly convey my feelings in a comment.

I think posting your work in lots of other places is a good idea, DA can be really bad for the esteem. I've come to dislike the site a bit myself, the fact that the "What's Hot" page mostly consists of half naked women with impossibly huge boobs says a lot about it.

Took me like 2 weeks to write my first smut chapter...not sure if my interpretation of gay smut is accurate...but I tried....both Giton and Meet (who are experts in the smut department) helped me with mine <3. Sometimes other suggestions can really help you when you're stuck!

Nikki's scene is GOOOOD. So good. I'm not saying that because she is a cinnamon roll--it is has the right amount of spice without anatomizing or having the action dissolve into the aether.

But yes, smut is hard (and turgid) to write. And it is good to have someone else look at it. I would suggest, if you give your writing to a friend, don't ask for vague "feedback." Give them a map--it will help them to hone in on certain areas of your writing and it will help you because your comments will be more focused.  When my students do the dreaded peer review, I have them do this. Give the reviewer three things to focus on, like "I'm not sure about my introduction, specifically x." The people who are giving feedback might feel unsure of themselves as well. Such maps help to alleviate such anxiety.

As far as criticism goes, I have a very thick skin. But even if you do not, remember that you don't have to take their suggestions, and all positive reviews, while nice, are not particularly helpful. In fact, they are not helpful at all.

People on sites like AO3 comment largely to show appreciation, not to give feedback. Sometimes authors ask for feedback, but conversations on such sites are stilted --comments are public, etc. You are better served asking a friend for honest feedback.

You are all being very helpful right now. Also, I think I like Giton's tentacle interpretation best. Sorry, Fenris. ;)

Yes..I have noticed that Deviant Art has a lot of borderline pornography. Also.. searching for Mass Effect art is VERY scary..I do not recommend it unless you want to see a million pictures of Miranda and Liara with huge boobs and pregnant with weird alien babies. Fun stuff that is.

Aaaaanyway...  I do feel better now. I'll keep writing and posting. :D

The most I've ever used DA over the past few years was to look up Mass Effect art. But since my only ship was fShep/Liara, it was usually fine. A mix of sensual, cute, and smut. It helped with the massive amounts of feelings.

Smut tends to be the most difficult thing for many writers. There are so many considerations to make. How much or how little should you describe? Which acts are within the parameters of this character's personality? What imagery ought to be evoked or avoided? I've seen writers reach for the visceral and dredge up the disgusting, while others used such vague language as to almost utterly erase the presence of one of the participants in the act (all by accident). There is no shame in having difficulty in this department. It takes practice, care, and as mentioned above writers always benefit from interacting with their peers and trusted partners. My dear smut padawan Cinnamonikki, whose natural talent astounds me, has the right of it.

Truth.  I think the key that I've seen with either of those - it's the metaphors.  Favorites so far: Like loaves of bread, nectar, finest of Arthlathan wines(i don't know what that tastes like...why use that) etc.  It's always with food.  There are a lot of good resources out there for writing smut and what pitfalls to avoid.  Also what I've seen is people tend to not describe where everybody is in the scene very well.  So if you're writing porn...just straight up...the person reading usually would like to actually picture it.  So if your characters are in one position and suddenly, in the next paragraph, in another position without any real description of how they got there then it becomes a bit jarring.

If the point is not tot titillate...perse...but to show an intimate act. So more like fluff, then fade to blacks work really well if you're uncomfortable or unsure of writing it.  I always recommend having someone else read it before publishing any porn though.  I think that's where an "editor" is the most helpful.

Speaking of smut - here's my ask on Kink Meme - if anyone wants to follow/take a crack at it

No Mass Effect searches on DA for me.

I swear, I've been scarred for life by some of the fan-art on there. Who thinks making Ed Edd & Eddy porn is a good idea, seriously.

Glad you feel better ^w^ I'll definitely have to check out your fan-fic. Although, if it's smutty, I probably won't be much help as far as critique goes... smut is definitely outside my area of expertise >////<

CHOICE. SPIRIT.

I just found out the other day that if you choose "virgins" with Cole in the party he says he can find one instead of being all out, as he usually does (though I attacked).

*hugs Cole*

Posting your work in multiple areas is generally a good idea just because some people only look on one particular site for fanfiction. For me, I never read fanfic on DeviantArt because i don't like the formatting. For a long time, I only exclusively used Fanfiction.net for writing and reading. I just recently moved over to AO3, and while I can't say I'm getting more comment, I know i'm reaching people I would have otherwise.

Livejournal used to be really popular for fanfiction. I think Tumblr has taken that over now. I hear a lot of people use Wattpad too. There's tons of fanfic sites out there. Though, trying to use them all could definitely get to be a headache.

I HAVE SO MANY LIFESPAN FEELS.  I HAVE SO MANY FEELS ABOUT SHEPARD AND LIARA'S DAUGHER.  I HAVE SO MANY LIARA/FSHEP FEELS IN GENERAL.

It has one Sorry, my mistake.  He's a Choice Spirit.

I'm always torn with that quest.  On the one hand: accept Immy's offer and Michel dies on the other... wait, no.  There's no downside!

I still do. They've settled a little bit into whatever they are now, but there are reasons why shots of my Shepard and Liara together have been the wallpapers on all of my devices for a few years now. Liara shares space with Solas on my tablet, and the pic I have set as an avatar here is rotating with two Shepard/Liara screens on this laptop.

I haven't been captured like this since ME.

I used to have a Shepard/Liara background but it's now Solavellan (actually, it's my version of your avatar).  Solas grabbing The Butt is a vital part of the game.
