Not going to lie, I like the hat. It's actually pretty cute. While it might not have been his intention, this accessory makes Solas stand out more. He's the only one with something extra (not even Cole gets to keep his hat) and it may have been necessary, honestly. Without it, something just feels...missing, from his ball outfit. Like there's empty space.

I guess. I just feel like the devs are pushing the whole, "SURPRISE! Elvhenan wasn't the great utopia the Dalish think and ancient elves were just as big a jerks as Tevinter and the Orlesians!" when I don't think it's either surprising or soul-crushing since the Dalish fully admit they know next to nothing about their past, and are trying to recover it.

 

My theory is they're trying to make the Dalish the biggest jerks possible so the players will feel as smug as possible when we tear them down.

 

I mean, between the Sabre Clan being retconned from fairly likable if wary of outsiders DAO to intensely, violently, murderously bigoted against anything different (like Merrill) in DA2, and the "magic is revered as part of the elves' lost heritage and mages are treated like just another member of the clan if they aren't leaders" in DA2 being retconned to "only 3 mages per clan and any more either get dumped on another clan or left to die in the wilderness," I feel like the devs WANT players to hate them.

It's bad enough that they're discriminated against and suffer racial prejudice that has real world parallels.  Now it's like BW are trying to make us hate that we've felt sympathetic towards the elves.  There's deconstructing the idea of the perfect Tolkien-elven society, and what happened in DAI.  Maybe I'm biased.  Elves are my favourite race and I love playing as the underdog.  But it does feel a bit like BW has started hating the elves.

Um... that person also romanced her with a Qunari.  I mean, Sera doesn't have any problem with Qunari women the way she has a problem with "elfy" elves, and mages and nobles to a lesser extent. That's hardly a fair, or accurate, comparison. It's like saying, "What are you talking about? I dated an anti-Semite and I didn't experience any problems." "Yeah, because you're not Jewish!" If you're not part of the group that a person has a problem with, of course you're not going to see the problems that a person who is part of that group will experience. When the writer romances Sera as a non-self-hating Dalish and plays all the way to the ultimatum, I'll give it another read.

Regarding Solas's wolf form, I always took it that he's probably a shape-shifter like Morrigan, but favoured a wolf.

 

Edit: Would have loved to have seen it in game, but I guess it might have been too obvious. x)

 

This is what I always assumed.  Mythal is assoicated with dragons, and that's Flemeth's prefered shifted form.  I just assumed all the gods were shapeshifters and their associated animal was their favourite shift.

 

This was actually forshadowed back in DAO where Mahariel can tell Morrigan they've heard of Dalish keepers with magic like hers when they talk about shapeshifting.

I'm less annoyed at the hat itself and more how it passes into his fricking face! Doesn't that hurt, Solas? D:

 

 

That is most of it, but it looks goofy AND clips painfully through his face.

 

Nobody else gets a weird helmet for that scene. It's not like it hides his ears or anything. I don't know what they were attempting to go for.

 

My personal theory is that he picked out the hat himself because 1) he's a Fade nerd not a fashion nerd and 2) it annoyed Viv.
