There was one yesterday that reignited the sexual/asexual 'debate' too.  I was all 'nope' not going there again.

Personally, I don't see where the ace!Solas idea comes from and I'd think you'd have to ignore a lot of what he says to make it work (and it reminds me too much of people saying that Leliana/Josie/Bela/Bull/Merrill/Zev/Fenris/Anders are gay or straight because in their playthrough they never heard any dialouge to indicate they're bi) but... *shrugs*.

Personally, I don't see where the ace!Solas idea comes from and I'd think you'd have to ignore a lot of what he says to make it work (and it reminds me too much of people saying that Leliana/Josie/Bela/Bull/Merrill/Zev/Fenris/Anders are gay or straight because in their playthrough they never heard any dialouge to indicate they're bi) but... *shrugs*.

 

No, it definitely wasn't as bad as some, but if you've seen this come up 100 times already....

I've been reading some of the comments for chapter 12 of Message Sent...

Maybe it's just me, but I find it a bit amusing that people were annoyed at the girls' intervention of Ellana's relationship with a stranger on her phone. Sure, she's an adult and it's her business on who she wants to have a relationship with (even though it's only through text messages), but they did raise legitimate concerns like when Aveline asked if Solas was married. Something that didn't even cross Ellana's mind herself because butterflies in the stomach yo!

 

Sorry, I'm not sure why that bothered me so much. I know there are people who have met their significant other through texting, online chats, etc. and started out as strangers; but at the same time, I understand the view of friends and family who are concerned that the stranger on the other end of the line might be some kind of maniac with not-so-good intentions so I wasn't bothered much by the intervention. And I've heard horror stories of girls who finally meet up with their text partners only to end up being assaulted or dead.

 

Ugh! I'm rambling now, sorry for that... To each their own I guess.

It's all a fair point, but seriously, anyone expecting ME to hand over my phone to read my private texts is going to get a very rude gesture offered to them. It should be enough that someone else knows about it and that they get a good solid promise to have someone KNOW if they are going to meet, and where, and possibly with someone along. Or in a very public place. Past that, any person you meet could be a serial killer and you can hardly have someone with you on every date or dinner.

I can understand the emboldend part, because I thought the same on my own playthrough. It was only until someone (here in fact) mentioned that Merril was romancable to both genders, and further research on my own half enlightened me to the truth that they're all bi.

 

That being said, I romanced Fenris, he seemed interested in doinking Isabela before I finally got approval up enough with him to begin the romance with my Lady Hawke, there was no dialogue to indicate he was interested in men... As far as I was concerned, he was straight. Same with the rest of the characters because they didn't give any indication otherwise (except Isabela perhaps).

 

I don't want to discuss/argue too heavily on the matter because I don't care enough about what their sexuality is, only that I can understand where those people come from. I can only assume things got ugly with that topic for the whole ace!Solas thing to remind you of it.

I was rather glad that she wasn't THAT young but that's also adulthood and at that point, concern is fine. Cassandra has been called parole officer but I can't tell if that's serious or a joke but it does seem like she has some sort of authority, otherwise Ellana wouldn't have handed over the phone? Or feel obligated to meet her? Still, EVERYONE going through someone's texts would be overkill, even if it was funny.

 

A friend was standing over me recently while I replied to another friend and even that was kind of weirdly too close.

 

 

My boyfriend randomly messaged me after seeing a post I made on a game forum, and that's how we met. Though unlike F.H. there, he knew he was messaging me. Only I had no idea who this random person was messaging me. I had to figure it out. And there was nothing to it at the time. Then we started actually talking and realized we had a connection. I'm glad I didn't block him.

 

I kept him secret from almost everyone until the time we actually met in person months later, and I might have continued that for a bit if I hadn't had flowers to bring home that first day.

 

I had spent time with people I met online before, both in this city and abroad so it wasn't something new, but I had never dated someone I met online at that point.

I think what's important to remember is that people who are bi/pan/fluid/etc can and do sometimes have preferences. I make reference to my boyfriend and I'm in the Solas thread, but I consider myself open to whoever I'm drawn to. In a game, with somewhat limited interactions, sometimes there's shorthand. And DA2 was a bit weird with making all companions available to both m/f Hawke. Or the "playersexual" issue. DAI is more realistic. And people have said similar things to you about Josephine, for instance. How she gets betrothed to a man and how if you don't romance her or Blackwall, there are hints they like one another. Some people took that as 'erasure' when it comes to Josephine. Whereas Iron Bull will talk about bedding the barmaid but also wind up with Dorian in games where neither is romanced and they're in parties together. And Leliana often comes up since she's bi but prefers women. Not that you can't have a male Warden paired with her that she'd be happy with.

 

With the aceSolas thing it's weird because as Illyria said, you kind of have to ignore or bend certain things to believe that But there, it's sort of harmless. It just keeps coming up. I don't mind that there's no actual sex scene but I don't take Solas as lacking in sexual urges.

 

Not all asexuals completely lack them but people like my asexual friend do, and I can understand people who don't choose certain options imagining 'bed' was all cuddles and maybe kisses, but it doesn't mean the rest of us are looking too deeply into things. First kiss involves being dipped onto his thigh, after all.

I was sort of in the same boat as you were when it came to the LI's of DA2. When I first played DA2, I made a female Hawke and romanced Anders; and if you're female, Anders never brings up that he and Karl had a thing together so it never occurred to me that he was bi.

 

Same with my sister who romanced Fenris as a female Hawke. There wasn't any indication that Fenris seemed interested in men and was surprised when she found out that male Hawkes could romance him.

 

I guess the only one who didn't surprise me for being bi was Isabela.  I like that DA:I went down the route of giving all LI's certain sexualities (lesbian, gay, straight, bi, pan). Better representation than just having them as "playersexual", I feel.

 

As for ace!Solas, I never even knew that it was a thing until I went on Tumblr.

I think the point is there's a difference between thinking of someone as sexual and finding that attractive and  "oversexualizing" them (to the detriment of other things about them). I also got those very same signs.   Those indications that he's smooth and passionate and physical and yet also trying to hold back.
