It was a mercy killing. For my Hawke, at least. She didn't approve of what he had done, even if she understood his feelings, but he did have to answer for it. A swift death by way of a friend was better than what an angry mob would have done to him.

I always get him to 100% rivalry. At that point, he asks Hawke to kill him, that he can't control Justice and there's no telling what else he'd do if left alive. It's a mercy killing then, too. And it's what he wants.

I actually let Anders live in my cannon. I guess because it annoys Sebastian, and because he approved of my decision to give Fenris to Danarius, like a good friend would, he supported my decisions, how could I turn from him in his hour of need?

I think of the people who died as well, but Anders....what happened with Justice/Vengeance, and it's like...someone who needs help. As I said, he gets my protective instincts up, even if he did believe he should die for what he did, I chose not to give up on him.

Though I've heard a rivalmance is much more painful. That I should try.

Basically, I am one of those loyal saps who cares a lot about people and my first run is usually my canon so I wind up often making a lot of decisions like that.

I'm freed when I know what can and will happen.

I killed Anders once, in my Sebastian romance playthrough.  NEVER again!!! It was just too heart breaking. :(

My feelings toward Anders tend to vary based on playthrough.  The 100% rivalry playthrough with my purple manHawke, I just felt terrible for him.  I gave him the mercy killing because I felt like it was the only thing Hawke could do for hi,, the last act of friendship he would ever get.

The resolutionist femHawke did a friendship romance with him, and I felt a lot less bad for Anders in that playthrough.  The two of them were the worst enablers, feeding off each other's thirst for vengeance.  I actually wound up headcanoning that she figured out he was up to something bad, and chose not to stop him in Act 3.

My canon heroes are always pro mage (and mages) but yet I just can't let Anders live.  All I can think about is the 100+ people in the Chantry who died and the thousands killed in Kirkwall and in the war he

started.

Same. I absolutely could not let Anders live, especially after seeing his relationship with romanced!Hawke (it's pretty manipulative and abusive—of the Stockholm Syndrome variety). I understand the Chantry and templar order are oppressive af but terrorism????? No. Plus, the way he treated my Fenris/Hawke. I was always like, "Keep yo' inappropriate jealous comments to yo'self."

Yeah.  Making comments about how Fenris is more of a dog than a man while he's standing right there.

Dude.  I told you three years ago I wasn't interested in you.  Insulting the man I love isn't going to change that.

EDIT: He's also fairly bad about Merrill/Hawke too

For me, the thing with Anders is similar to the case with Bartrand. Bartrand's mind gets completely taken over by the red lyrium, and he asks Varric to end it and not leave him as he is. Varric wants to call for a healer, but even Anders can't help him. There's nothing that can be done for him but put him out his misery. Keeping him alive, just leaves him suffering, imo. So I kill him. I do the same for Anders. I feel for him and how he tried to help Justice. But at this point, Vengeance has taken him over. I don't think there's anything that can be done for him, and leaving him possessed is just cruel. Plus, at max rivalry, he's asking me to do it.

Honestly, the Anders romance creeps me out. It is very manipulative and Anders is extremely obsessed and possessive. I don't know if people who play the romance don't see it or are able to look passed it somehow (I would love some insight on this, so feel free to explain). I wouldn't even flirt with him except that I need the rivalry points in a pro mage diplomatic Hawke playthrough. But that romance is just one huge no. I refuse to touch it.

Yeah. I actually romanced Anders first because I really liked him in Awakenings and was so upset by how off-putting his romance was in DA2.  I wouldn't go so far to say that he's abusive but he is really manipulative.  Not ok with that for a lot of personal baggage-y reasons.    Not saying that warrants killing him. I actually do it because I think he's truly way too far-gone with Justice. I think it is an actual mercy to kill him. To both Justice and him.  It's even underscored in DAI - his mental state is much much worse when you run into Hawke again.

I've been an Anders fan (both Awakening and DA2) since day one, and like most things, it varies by player.  I have seen people who thought Anders could do no wrong, which kinda made me worry    Personally, I love his romance (especially the friendship one) because of how messed up it is.  It's not a healthy relationship; it will never end happily.  And that's why I like playing it; it's a fantastic trainwreck of a story, and I could see it coming a mile off.

Anders' relationship comes off most manipulative in a friendmance with a non-mage Hawke.  It comes off most equitable in a friendmance with pro-revolution mage Hawke, which is how I played.  Again, it'll never be healthy or good, but at least my Hawke dove into the crazy knowing exactly what she was getting into.

It's difficult, it has manipulative elements, and to me, it fits in with the overall desperation, helplessness, and screwed up-edness of the game as a whole.

Right???? I mean 'no' means 'no'. You tell him nicely, he tries to guilt trip you and continues to be a jerk about it after. I mean, dude, lay off.

Yeah, definitely. I also feel like he didn't respect the power of Justice as much as he should have (similar to an irresponsible gun owner).

YESYESYES agreed! When I saw his first romance option, red flags immediately went off. He says it over and over again: "I'm an uncontrollable monster and I'll only hurt you." He's conscious of his actions and how bad it can get yet it's justified by being written off like he's a harmless sad puppy who can't control his urge to mark his territory. And Hawke just gobbles it all up and follows him everywhere!!! It's just...so. toxic.

I have not actually killed him.

Mostly because DA2 is so glitchy that I can't get to that point. DA2: doesn't register romances or friendships

DA:I game crashes randomly

ME:1 Game crashes when I try to go to a new planet I  don't have a quest objective for.

Origin is such a good, working platform for gaming.

I don't like messed up craziness as a rule or anything, but with the way everything else felt, and seeing Anders' basically spiral, it kind of made a desperate and bleak sort of sense to care. Like how some people can fall for someone that becomes an addict, to use one example, and tries to help in spite of what seems like impending disaster.

It was added drama but it just.....felt like it fit?

I don't seek out complicated, screwed up people. I certainly didn't expect Solas would be bringing the pain with him in a completely different manner.

I am firmly in the dog camp. It doesn't help that the only cat I see regularly acts like a hateful jealous girlfriend when I'm the girlfriend. Years of this and she'd have my head if she could.
