I don't think Solas has trust issues. He's an elven god. I think he just likes to choose his players carefully. He doesn't like to endanger people. The fact that the Dalish don't listen to him would probably make him a bit angry, but why should that make him have trust issues? He's not weak and timid.

But if Cole is just a friend...why should he share his secrets that he doesn't tell Lavellan with him?

Because Cole is a spirit.

And he does have trust issues.  It gets mentioned after All New, Faded For Her.

I don't think Solas shared anything in particular with Cole. Cole just knew. Same with Blackwall.

I was so paranoid of messing up the romance my first time through that I barely flirted with anyone other than Solas and occasionally Dorian.  Clearly I need to flirt more when I replay her since no one seems to ninja other than Blackwall.  And that's...never gonna happen in this Age or any other.

ToP again: Not Solas, but relevant a page or two ago  :P

Spoiler

Flirt with everyone!  Even people who can't be romanced!

If the Nightmare offers you a heart option just think what would Hawke do?

You all play nice now, okay?

Can we please not say this? Maybe I'm the only one, but I find it highly unpleasant. I saw a thoughtful debate in progress and then I read this and thought that some people must have been aggressive and I just missed it.

People in this thread are always nice. But this sentence ... as if every time somebody here disagreed with somebody else it were aggression. No wonder people start deleting their accounts if we keep implying a negative atmosphere.

I was being facetious there.  Doesn't always come accross well online.

But you have actually highlighted a reason why he doesn't tell friend!Lavellan:

'Only have him divulge this very earth-shattering secret to someone who has proven willing to listen'

Solas has trust issues and his only friends for the last goodness knows how many thousands of years have been spirits.  Since he woke up he's been shunned by Dalish clans and treated as an apostate and second class citzen.  He has really bad trust issues.

And he has no idea how Lavellan will react to this news.  Solas is very careful in what he tells people and the only people he lets close are Cole and his girlfriend.  The secret he has is huge.  It could utterly destory some Dalish because it takes away everything they believe in.  Solas shares it with Lavellan because he trusts her.  Because he wants her to know the truth about himself.  Maybe that seems harsh for a Lavellan who is only a friend but - here's the important part - they are only a friendI consider this to be perfectly in character for a man who has massive trust issues and a habit of being very careful with what he tells people.

tl;dr:  I have a lot of thoughts on this subject.  Some of them are starting to make sense.

This is why I said that this scene could have been tied to the approval system, like Sera's roof cookies or Vivienne's formari ring scene. Both of those scenes are often hard to get, since both require a very high friendship. To even get to a high rating, you have repeatedly demonstrated to Solas that you are not one of the hostile Dalish who would react in the same manner.

That being said, you bring up a valid point. You can still be a friend (aka have positive approval) but not be enough of a friend to have Solas' confidence. He does have trust issues.

I think that in a way Solas is weak because he starts the relationship with Lavellan. He isn't strong enough to stop that from happening and he isn't strong enough to tell her who he is and what he has done.

Issues of trusting someone with his feelings perhaps? Doesn't mean he can't trust people with valuable information..

But if the argument of friend vs lover is the reason why Solas withholds info from a friendquiz and tells romanced Lavellan more....shouldn't he tell her everything he tells Cole? Girlfriend has the right to know.

And why should it matter if Cole is a Spirit? He can become human. So how is that different?

He does have that conversation on the balcony where he admits the Inquisitor surprised him and goes on to say all these negative things he expected from the Dalish. So, I would say, yes, he did decide ahead of time that the Inquisitor would be the same as everyone else.

Now, he does grow to care for and respect the Inquisitor. But I believe his prior opinion of the Dalish still stands. He tells Lavellan that she's unique and approves if you choose the dialogue option that the Dalish didn't make you who you are - that you did that yourself. I believe he holds her as an exception, not evidence that he's been wrong.

And while he does come to care greatly for Lavellan, she still holds a Dalish background and Dalish beliefs and values. As much as he might come to respect her and see her as different, I don't believe he ever forgets her origins and his experience with the Dalish. I don't think he believes anything good would come out of telling her everything that's wrong with what she believes in. And he's constantly saying that she "surprises" him in her attitudes and her willingness to learn from him. I think a part of him still expects her to shut him down.

I will only say this: Solas's proclivity towards viewing individuals as "exceptions" to their social and cultural milieu is myopic and short-sighted. It is a real flaw with the character. He generalizes. Then makes exceptions for inidividuals who "surprise" him.

NB: Pointing out flaws is not a dig against the character--flaws make more them interesting.

I'm glad the vallaslin scene is romance only tbh, we know Solas only brought it up because he chickened out of telling her that he is Fen'Harel. I don't really see why he would bring it up otherwise, having someone doubt everything they've ever known on the eve of a battle that will shape the world, would be bad.  :P

Leliana in particular, though Cullen was as well. In conversation, he's not so much at first. But my Lavellan took the mountain pass and met Cullen later at Haven.

Leliana wanting to execute her agent....that was....a moment. It was the first time my Lavellan really felt like 'no, this is too much, I'm going to speak up'.

And as a player, I'm glad I did, since Leliana became Divine like I wanted.

Letting Leliana kill the traitor is a decision I stand by, even if it did turn her into a crazy person.  :P

That's true.

Personally I think he did intend to once he got his orb back, but that went downhill quickly. x) No evidence on that, just what I think he'd do.

I think, once he had the orb back, he would have spilled everything to a friend/romance inquisitor. Maybe not a rival inquisitor.

I do like flirting with Blackwall at the beginning. He has some humorous dialogue.

And Iron Bull barely reacts to the flirting. It's almost like normal dialogue.

They aren't.  This is a perfectly fine debate.  People aren't being antagonistic. They are stating their view points reasonably and backing them up. There is no snark. No anger.

What ends up happening when somebody comes in and starts saying "Stop FIGHTING", it starts to create a tense atmosphere in which one didn't exist.  Friends debate.  I disagree with mine, not on the regular, but it happens and noone starts screaming "MAKE IT STOP".  We state our opinions. Someone may concede because they learn something new or we are just like 'welp that's an opinion'. That's all this is.

That valuable information could end up costing his relationship with the person he tells it to. Poor Solas has no way to gauge how a Lavellan would react.

I meant I don't think Solas explicitly said anything to Cole, that he sat him down one day and bore his soul or whatever. No doubt the whole situation plays on his mind and Cole can pick up on that as part of being a spirit, from quite a long way away it seems. We know he can cut Cole out of his head when he starts worrying about things, but only when he starts blabbing about it to other people. But so long as Cole doesn't say anything to others, he's content to leave him alone.

Hello !

Solas does have trust issues even with his friends.
"- But when I offered lessons learned in the Fade,  I was derided by my enemies... and sometimes by my allies.
Liar, Fool, Madman. There are endless ways to say someone isn't worth listning to. Over time, it grinds away at you.
- That's when you should lean on your friends.
- Apologies, Inquisitor. I have learned not to do that. "

Yes. This. I still fail to see how killing a double agent, a direct threat to the Inquisition's security, should harden Leliana to the point of "I will kill anyone who gets in my way!!!"

The only Leliana worth keeping in my opinion, as long as she doesn't become divine...she's better at her job that way.

Because he's a spirit.  Solas perfers spirits to people.  Cole becoming more human doesn't change the fact that he's a spirit.

And the vallaslin thing isn't just imformation.  It's taking away one of the most important cultural things about the Dalish.
