I do tend to give Emon some slack with how Alistair was raised. I mean, Isolde thought Alistair was Emon's child - that he had cheated on her and was landed with a bastard son. That could not have been good for family relations as it was. To have accepted Alistair into his home, Emon probably would have lost his wife and son, and who knows what would have happened politically. I think he did the best the he could under the circumstances.
 
I haven't read The Calling yet but it does seem like Marric is the one to be more upset with if he just handed Alistair off and said, "Here. You deal with it."
 
That said, I thought his political movements in regard for getting Alistair on the throne were a little shady. Like, is that all you freaking care about? Alistair is standing right there and this whole fiasco about whose son he is is over with. You have nothing a little more caring to say?
 
I would have loved to have kept Alistair off the throne just to spite him, but not putting him on the thronefforeshadowing sparing Loghain makes Alistair a wandering drunk, and I can't accept that. And I do think he and Anora balance each other out. 
 
 
See, I do the exact same thing after I establish what I consider to be my canon playthrough. It just might take me a few tries because I get the game where I want it, and I then I have to play the same thing over and over because that just how it goes.

If Eamon had taken Alistair in and lost Isolde before she had Connor it would have avoided a whole lot of bad things later, though. A hindsight demon could really feast on that man, I tell you.

Eamon's actions gave me a great deal more appreciation for Teagan (that and the scene where tells off Loghain). He seems genuinely happy to see Alistair when we show up in Redcliffe, unlike pretty much anyone else. Teagan gives me feels and I was so sad we didn't get to see him in DA:I.

My first playthrough tends to be my canon since I'm going through without knowledge. Also, first romances usually ruin me at least partially for other choices. I also take my sweet time playing through, exploring fully, and completing as much as I can.

 

But I am freer on playthrough #2 and beyond and can construct something I like/feel better about. Though I do tend toward playing characters who make the more 'heroic' or at least, kinder, decisions, and that rarely comes back to bite me. Though it can. And sometimes other games demonstrate that better.

99% of the time, the first PC I create is my canon.  But not the first playthrough, because of f***ing stuff up.  Mass Effect was probably the game where my actions changed the most, since the first time I played ME1 I was in a rush, and didn't get to a lot of the little side quests.  And my headcanon for that Shepard changed quite a bit by the time I did my for canons playthrough on PC.

I actually also prefer when modern AUs keep the races and perhaps even some of the magic present in the current games. Otherwise, it ends up feeling like the work is utterly divorced from Dragon Age, and that just doesn't hold my interest to the same extent.

Yeah, multiple playthroughs are the way to go. Personally I have a canon "theme" that I always try to follow in my first PT, after which I start varying it and doing as many combos as possible, but the actual canon PT is usually the one that's closest to that canon theme. I try to stick to what I think is appropriate for that and chisel it up to canon status, though generally I do pretty well in first PT's to get mostly what I want.

 

Oh, ME I did sooo many times - but I ended up the same way with ME as I did with DA:O in the end: once I found the "one" which fit me best I kept doing replays of that basically, honing the canon.

I just posted this in the comments of the chapter itself, but keep the races/origins to give people the feeling of Dragon Age and use them to do things like create personal conflict and to add 'flavor' details.

This is my situation. Friends and boyfriend have encouraged me to attempt a renegade playthrough with a Garrus romance and I'm like...it would feel wrong. After three games of investment in her, I can't really let go. Hell, I still have screens of my Shepard and Liara on almost all of my devices as wallpaper, and it has been a couple of years. The big version of my avatar has joined the wallpaper rotation on this laptop, and the Hierophant card joins Liara on my tablet.
