Was playing in Redcliffe on my mage last night (I also gave her yet another makeover in the BE) and Solas slightly disapproved when it came to Tanner and Cassandra offering her a spot serving the Inquisition. I didn't remember that from before, but it fits, since you're kind of blackmailing her into it.

I took the Lord Woolsley quest but as a mage, battles keep making me hit targets I don't want to otherwise, so templars come with a side of roast ram. I wonder if I can lead him back or if I should slay the demon on purpose (or might accidentally  trigger it).

I feel bad for deciding to side with the templars on this run but alas, I want to see the other side of all of this. I also like Fiona.

The entire ruin from the Dalish Origin is fascinating.  It's human architecture with statues honouring the elven god and a passage created by dwarves (okay, it's for a Lord of the Rings joke, but it could mean something).  Mahariel can suggest that the elves who lived there were slaves, but why would there be a statue honouring Falon-Din?  It's not hidden - it's right there at the eluvian chamber.  What if the ruin was a place where elves and humans lived together, possibly even before Tevinter destroyed Arlathan?  It would explain why the place was dedicated to elven gods, but the eluvian is flanked by human statues.

As far as the human-made temple honoring Falon-Din - I could be mistaken, but didn't the elves try to live peacefully with humans for a while before discovering their lifespan was shortening because of them? So your theory that the ruin was a place where elves and humans lived together before the fall of Arlathan could be right... actually, I'd think it'd have to be even before Arlathan because I think that's when the elves segregated themselves from the rest of the world.

Solas does say that Falon'din was obsessed with getting more worshipers. Who's to say he stuck with just getting worship from elves? Those ruins could be an old temple that ancient Tevinters (back before their three tribes had merged to be called "Tevinter", anyway) built for him back before he was sealed away and elven civilization collapsed and Tevinter as a whole took up Old God worship. Hence why Duncan thinks some things in the ruins look Tevinter; they are.

It's not huge but it's between 2000x2500 pixels so big enough to warn you. Here it is!

Now back to that Solas painting I was supposed to have finished by now.

Welp. There goes my work productivity  :D Thank you so much!

You're aware that you have to kill Fiona if you go to Therinfall, right?  Just wanted to make sure.

There is something wonderfully ironic about Lavellan who conscripts the templars.  All her life, her clan has feared and avoided them, and now she holds their leash.  I think it only gets better with mage Treveylan for sheer irony.

If you have the Underworld Perk (or you are playing a dwarf ;) ), and use the PC's "special" dialogue, he will not disapprove. If Sera is with you, she very much approves. *nods!*

Question!

To anyone who has drank from the Well, then completed the Solassan Temple (aka shards from hell), does the final tablet show a complete translation, or do you still get the "abbreviated" version from Solas? I took some screenies of it last night, but they are on my other computer.

Why would you feel bad? Sir Barrus is a badass. Also Calpernia.

Maybe it's because I'm having major Templar feels, but Mages aren't the only ones who are locked and controlled by the chantry. Both sides have their flaws and their rights. Choosing Templars, I think, makes more sense politically/military and for closing the breach. But after more in depth stories and facts about Templars, makes me wish I could burn down the Chantry and give them all a good, long, paid vacation.

So much pity for mages, understandable,  but not a lot of people are willing to see the other side of the coin.

Yes, which is why my post originally said Poor Fiona.

But I'm going to go and conscript the templars this time on my mage Lavellan. Kind of a terrible situation but RPing it off.

Ha, well, my first perks are always extra inventory and things like that, so I didn't have that yet. I had Cassandra talk to her.

So I've heard, and this is why I'm going there this time, for player reasons. Just to see the other path. But my sympathies and feelings have always been pro-mage freedom. (Remember I set Anders free and had my Hawke run off with him.). The Chantry and templars do have their issues (lyrium addiction isn't pretty), but what they do to mages is worse, IMO.

edit: That said, the perspective of people like Minaeve and the mage you find in the tavern in Redcliffe on templars and the Circle are important, and theirs is one reason why I'm RPing that my mage goes to work with them.

So this amazing artwork done by vilify for geeky-jez's fanfic Var Hellathen popped up on my tumblr dash and it looks amazing! Dark, but amazing nonetheless.

EDIT: Also, nice to have you back Caddius! I do miss the little history lessons you used give to this thread. :D (And Madrar, I see you there, liking one of my art post, hehehe! Nice to have you back too.)

Hi!   Had to take an unintended break due to crushing work stuff, but I'll probably sneak in more often now that keeping up with the daily post count feels less like trying to drink from a firehose.

I had a theory that the vallaslin was tied to the 'power battery' of each respective god. In Mythal's case, it was the Well, and when Morrigan or the Inquisitor gobbled it up, Abelas and the Sentinels were both able to and forced to leave, as the magic empowering the Temple and binding them to Mythal's service was no longer operating.

The fact that they use their own blood and turn it into a symbol of their god could be a spell in its own right. Or it requires extra juice from legit Arlathan priests and mages, and the Dalish have a version that's just a tattoo.

That being said, I enjoy the mental image of a demure Inquisitor with Elgar'nan's vallaslin getting her Krogan blood rage on when Elgie starts sending brainwaves out.

*theory-pounce*

WHY HELLO THERE CADDIUS.

I am totally on board with this.  The power-battery idea is a crazy interesting twist (and nice catch!) but even if we didn't have Abelas and the ToM scene to work from, we'd need something to explain Fenris.  His unique abilities in DA2 are directly linked to his vallaslin (blood writing using the literal Blood of the Earth = supercharged vallaslin?) which suggests there may be more to the original connection between the Gods and their marked Chosen than the abject slavery Solas implies.

"Power at a price" is a theme that gets repeated more than once in the Temple of Mythal.  A conduit, perhaps, to access a fraction of the God's power in return for service?  A free exchange that morphed over time into a form of social control?  Possibly the equivalent of crafting an enchantment on living flesh, rendered powerless by the substitution of ink for the God's blood in Dalish tradition?

I don't know, but it feels like there has to be something to it beyond marking the Gods' "ownership".

Hmm. Just because this was discussed. I think... Sifr? pointed out that it seems out of character for Solas to erase somebody's memories with selfish intent, because Solas usually feels so strongly about personal freedom, free choice, self-determination etc. But maybe it's true and it all comes down to double standards on his side.

I wonder, if Solas is able to make somebody forget, couldn't he have done so much to stop Corypheus too? It is quite powerful to change a person's mind after all.

What do you mean? Uh... Solas should have made the dragon forget about their presence constantly so it wouldn't fight back?

I'm willing to forgive the Cole scene, since he's not exactly stripping anyone's personal secrets away against their will.  He's just "taking back" his own secret, which Cole wouldn't have had access to if he were fully human.  No harm, no foul.

And not to push theory too hard, but I don't think he can Jedi mind trick Corypheus into forgetting who he is or what he wants.  Dirthamen's domain is circumscribed to secrets.  When we encounter the remains of the Fex (or whoever built the pyramids in Par Vollen) I think we're going to find that Dirthamen/Falon'din work in tandem like Anubis and Thoth: judging the dead by examining their true selves -their secrets laid bare- weighing them in the balance, and deciding whether the soul is to be wiped and returned to the Thedas cycle, remain in the Fade, or pass Beyond.

Thanks to Reznore over in the Cullen thread, I am currently foaming at the mouth.

Spoiler

SO THAT IS VERY INTERESTING.

The Voshai having dwarf captains, their focus on lyrium, and all that, along with the creepiness of Amaranth that is probably the lands of the Executors. I NEED IT ALL! *waves theory-crafting banner*

*cackles madly as she takes up the banner*

If we flip the map "right side up", Amaranth = 'Murica, complete with crazy Roanoke situation, plus a potential connection to Tolkien's Undying Lands of the West ("Amaranth" = Greek ἀμάραντος "Amaranthos" = "Unfading") home of Valar, Maiar, and ancient elves. Not a bad match for "Powers Across the Sea", for certain.   Also, given real-life parallels, I've got $10 that says the native human cultures of Amaranth have a healthy respect for a trickster wolf/coyote god.

....which sounds like someone we know, yes?

I can't decide if the Deep Roads go underneath the oceans or not. It seems that way, considering they connect from Valammar to the Primordial Thaig. But then Riordan says that one of the last Archdemons is under the waking sea, and therefore safe from darkspawn for the time being.

*jaw drops*

Wow. I completely missed that.  Do you remember the scene or dialogue tree that leads to this reveal?

I really wish we had to choose one side and destroy the other.  I didn't like how the war was handled at all really. After all that build up, we basically have to save one side from their own stupidity. Meh. :(

This. I would have liked the option to at least work with both in some way. But it was overly simplistic, even if we get good characters/side stories out of it (as with Samson, since he's all I've had so far).
