I just......this made me happy.
I chose to headcanon that the banter took place out of Hawke's earshot. Because there's no way that my nutty maleficar Hawke wouldn't have turned around and murdered him on the spot for that.
+100 approval to Fenris for his response during that banter, though. He, Anders, and Merrill never get along, but he'd never even think of turning them over behind Hawke's back.
That's one of my favourite Fenris banters for a reason.

Back on topic, I'm glad JoH finally came out for everyone. But I hesitate to want a Wolf Hunt DLC. The sooner we get one the sooner the game will be completely over. That is unless Wolf Hunt brings Solas back and subsequent DLC brings interesting lore. That actually sounds good. It will suck so much if I have to play DLC without Solas. Unlike JoH, playing a Weisshaupt DLC would make absolutely no sense unless it's played after Corypheus' fall.
Now one of you who possesses 1) a Twitter and 2) more social media courage than me needs to tweet that at Weekes

Since I only finished the game... er, in the early hours of this morning (I've napped since), I'm a little unclear on some details. What, do you lot reckon, if things had gone to plan and Corypheus wasn't involved, did Solas intend to do with the orb?

He mentions needing to "unlock" its power, but doesn't go into specifics.
My guess: the orb is multipurpose. It's dedicated to Fen'Harel and contains his power, but it's not necessarily meant for the Anchor, or travel to the Fade, or anything. It's a flexible mana battery that basically provides a talented and powerful enough user with tremendous magical potential. I say that because Cory uses it to create the Anchor and control his red lyrium dragon, and I'm pretty sure at least the red lyrium dragon wasn't a priority for Fen'Harel back in the day.
As for what Solas intended to do with it, not sure. But whatever it was, I'm reasonably certain that it had at least a 50% chance of breaking the world again. God of Bad Decisions and all that

It's obviously not possible to know, and Solas went to recharge immediately, taking plan B for whatever he (and possibly Flemeth) had planned in Thedas.
I think one of the reasons he reacts so emotionally when he sees the broken orb (the moment when he turns around and immediately, his face changes, the mask goes back on.....it kills me) is that it represents another failed plan, a final loss of particular hope, as well as possibly meaning that he is now forced to take actions he might have wanted to avoid.
All speculation but there are things, such as the unfinished fresco panel sketched out but left uncolored, and what he says to a romanced Lavellan about everything being made clear, that suggested, even if was going to leave, that he did not plan a sudden, rapid disappearance.

"It was not supposed to happen this way. No matter what comes, I want you to know what we had was real."
Then GD Cassandra yells for the Inquisitor.
Sigh, and then the Inquisitor just leaves him there, but they ARE broken up.
I personally would have liked to seen her ignore Cassandra (Or tell her to hold on) and react to his words. It was pretty heartbreaking.

I noticed it the first time (it stayed with me) and like you, I wish there were some option to stay and continue the conversation because that was an important moment. I don't see how anyone would drop it. YES, THERE IS MORE. Gah, so frustrating.
and then when you see him look down for that moment, I just knew he would be gone next time she looked up (but hoped not). And then ...he was.
It's a whole lot of moments and subtlety and the unknown why I love Solas as much as I do and credit the team for what they did with his character - writing and animating and just....the blink and you'll miss it emotions fleeting across his face.
I wonder if the Mask of Fen'harel was supposed to awaken Fen'harel by those still loyal to him? of course, things went crazy with the elves and Fen'harel eventually became taboo.
I have a great many thoughts and questions about Fen'Harel's great magical elven nap and where/what the circumstances were/who helped him (did he have followers....servants?....was he potentially alone/ how was he protected from murder, etc?
I wonder if we'll ever get anything on this stuff.

I have been thinking about that stuff too!
I mean, can you imagine if somewhere out there there is a Fen'Harel Temple? And from the little bit we have seen, followers of the pantheon seemed to be incredibly loyal. Just look at the sentinels in Mythal's Temple. And the priests of Dirthamen went kinda bonkers over the loss of their god. So....wouldn't that lead to the possibility that somewhere out there there is a Fen'Harel temple with some of his followers? I mean......Solas did tell Abelas that his people still linger and that there are other duties. And while I don't think Solas would have kept slaves(maybe he did at some point, who knows)...but I don't think he would have had a problem with elves choosing to follow him.
Oooo.....imagine Solas coming to Lavellan in a dream as a wolf and showing her the path to his Temple. She goes there and finds this beautiful temple and Solas just watches her walk around and then eventually Lavellan turns around and there's Solas in some kind of smexy Arlathan clothing.
*sigh*

I can not wait until we get a nice little Solas DLC. I need him back in my party dammit! Yet I fear closure because that means losing interest and moving on. I want to love Solas for as long as I can (lol I'm pathetic) I really crave and hate the idea of a Wolf Hunt DLC. I bet I'm alone in this confusion....
