Welcome back!

I've never seen the non-DR version of the meeting Flemeth scene.  That sounds really interesting.

Thank you!  :)

The non-DR version of Flemeth-Morrigan scene is really, really interesting; way more than with Kieran, to my taste. I also happened to play it with a Dalish mage with Arcane knowledge perk, and by choosing some of the special options for the perk and some of the special options for Dalish, the conversation came out as a fascinating exchange between Flemeth and my PC that exuded mutual respect (and incidentally making Morrigan sound completely lost and out of the loop, which I loved because I don't like her) It's worthwhile watching, I'll try to find a vid.

RE: The hahren/da'len theme, I think every writer is free to use it as they want, but I personally don't like it in romantic contexts. Using both terms clearly implies a hierarchy, which shouldn't exist in a relationship (at least not in a relationship I'd like) Calling each other da'len would be the closest equivalent to calling each other "baby" in a modern context. I'd certainly find it very odd that my bf called my "baby" and I called him "papa" or something like that in return. Certainly words, specially words used in romantic contexts, are what both partners make them to be; and though I didn't read Message Sent, from what you said maybe they use it in a playful way to tease each other about the age difference. It's not my cuppa, but apparently it's the writer's.

I'd recommend reading Message Sent.  It's the best modern AU around with some spot on characterisation.

I don't think 'da'len' is generally used as a pet name in romantic context.  They have lethallan/lin and vhenan for that.  Da'len - from what we've seen in the games and books - seems to be a mentor/student thing.  The problem in Message Sent is, as I've mentioned before, the context.  Solas thinks of Ellana as 'his da'len' something that, to me, moves it beyond playful flirting and into creepy.

The main problem is the limited amount of elven the devs have given us.

Hehe, yes, but that one is something she tells you directly. :)

I seem to like older women and men closer to my age/slightly younger, with exceptions. I think the only other person in Mass Effect I might conceivably romance if it were possible would be Samara. I know you can kiss and share some lines but I mean full.

I guess I like wisdom and someone with a lot of stories to tell. ;)

Kasumi or Mordin for me.

I was fangirling over Weekes' nerds long before DAI.

Just finished The Masked Empire. WHAT ARE THE THEORIES ON WHAT HAPPENED TO FELASSAN?!?! OMG!

I like Gaspard a lot more than I did in the game. But I still wouldn't let him touch the throne with his expansionism ideals.

I realize that I dislike and respect Celene the way I dislike and respect and Vivienne. They both play the game, and they are good at, but they are only out for themselves and have done some terrible things. I feel more affirmed in my decision to let Celene die in game.

I was worried reading the book would make me want to reconcile Celene and Briala in game. I'm glad I still have no desire to do that.

I actually have a little more hope for Briala, that she isn't going to turn out like Celene and end up putting herself above her cause. We'll see if that holds true.

Ooooh!  Best Elf theories!

I actually posted on this a few pages back but I'll say it again:

I am 100% against the idea that Solas killed him.  I think one of the trapped gods did (probably Falon'Din because he's a jerk) and that's the reason why Weekes still considers Felassan's vallaslin a spoiler.  He was bound to the service of Falon'Din but worked for Fen'Harel as best he could.

Cannot decide if I want to finish my unfinished playthroughs or do another Solas romance?

(Bull, Harding, Cullen, Dorian, Blackwall and Sera all need some lovin' too... but Solavallen is my favourite "canon" pairing next to Amell/Morrigan.)

Should I recreate her from scratch and have a new class, or restart my Mage from my first save on the Haven bridge?

I agree with the use of da'len, I meant that to be an equivalent to calling each other "baby", they would have to call each other that so the mentor/student meaning of the da'len/hahren opposition is removed. I find it creepy too, though I know there are people that like that kind of dynamics in a relationship specially if it's fictional (dunno if that's the case with the Message Sent writer)

I think you're right, elven was not made by the devs as a fully functional language, but more as a means of adding a exotic flavour and implying a different culture (like the Qunari words here and there... the Arishok saying "Arishok, Ariqun, Arigena"... ehem I'll go on) And the terms we get are little or no explained in game. So we are very limited as to interpreting terms or evaluating whether they're appropriate in certain contexts.

Sifr it it's of any help, I played mage on 2 of my 3 PTs because it's the one I enjoy the most; the romance with Cullen is very sweet and well-paced with quite some content, if you want to try something new.

You know, I just realized that, in fanfiction/fanart/etc., I've noticed da'len being used far more often than vhenan, and that makes me really confused    I certainly do see a student/teacher dynamic between them, but one that wanes shortly after Skyhold so I guess I don't understand the context of da'len/hah'ren being used consistently as opposed to occasional "Dalish respect" or Solas and Lav being... well, naughty  :P

It's funny cause I knew Solas lovin' the booty would be a pretty big thing the moment I encountered his wandering hand, but I never would have guessed him calling her da'len would be so popular.  Like others, da'len never even came up during my Lav's conversation with him.  Hmm, but I suppose you could make the same case for Solas being asexual as you could avoid all those sexy time dialogues too... hmmmm....

I've never quite been 'into' baldness, but I know that I tend to fall for personalities and then the physical things kind of fall more into place on the attractiveness scale and that definitely happened with Solas as well. Though a lot of his original promo art did him absolutely no justice.

As a funny aside, I also never tend to be interested in older men and Solas is definitely 'older' (surprise!).

Remembering some of the promo art (since I was picking up every scrap of it back in the day), they definitely changed his face from some of the original screenshots they showed us. They didn't do him much justice back then, no. I remember when all anyone outside this thread said about Solas was how ugly he was. Once people knew more of him, that talk died down quite a bit!

I've gotten to quite like the bald. Partially to be contrary to those who were dissing Solas, yes. And maybe partially now to be contrary to the constant whining about him not having dreadlocks like in the concept art.  I can't imagine Solas looking any other way than he does now and I wouldn't want him to.

I like this theory. The book never says what Felassan's vallaslin is and I really wanted to know. Then again, the book never says who anyone's vallaslin is. But I like this theory.

So I have gone back to the fic and re-read some of it. I think the author is trying to give an additional layer of meaning to the words, specifically I would cite chapter 6 as reference. Her Ellana refers to both lethallan/lin and da'len as terms of endearment. Her Solas also seem to give the word da'len that goes beyond the teacher/student relationship to imply some level of kinship. However, I am not quite sure what level of kinship she is going for and the water is muddied by the level of infatuation that appears very early in the fic. It may have been less off putting, had the author clearly established a transition from friendly banter to something more romantic. I have also seen fic use da'len as a way Solas tries to reinforce the idea that he really shouldn't give in to these feeling he's having about Lavellan, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. I almost wonder if she is trying to go for da'len as a universal "we are all children of the clan" idea, but again I am not sure. I do agree however that since Elvhen was developed as a cypher at first rather than a fully fleshed out language it is hard to say what all the nuances of the word might be given that we also only have a few specific example of how the games/books use them and all of those example leverage the word on the teacher/student, mentor/protege connotation of the words, with one rather scathing "child" thrown in there too.

All of this has me wishing that the Bioware team would come out with a "Languages of Thedas" book. All thought, that might not solve anything given the implication in DA:I that what we know about Elvhen culture is riddled with misinterpretations and half-truths.

I finished my Lavellan play through. It's just...I'm really...I have several emotions right now. All at the same time.

Cannot decide if I want to finish my unfinished playthroughs or do another Solas romance?

You should start a new character. It will be feel more fresh and new that way. Definitely new class. Your first Lavellan was a mage?

I didn't expect to plan a second Solasmance, and yet...Here I am about to do so :D . I'm going to make a very different character this time, I think. Ninaeve was intended to be savvy and relatively worldly for a Dalish. I head canon that she is the one her clan sent to trade with humans. She learned to be diplomatic and cunning, and she's always felt that the Dalish are too xenophobic and cloistered. She'd been hoping to encourage her clan to build more alliances, be more involved with city elves.

I'm still playing with names for this new one. I'm going to go mage this time, instead of rogue, and I think her being a rift mage just like him, actually selecting that specialization out of admiration for him will work really well. She's going to be more introverted, and a little naive. Her perception of her people idealized.

"Odette" is coming to mind, like the main character from Swan Lake. I don't think it sounds very Elven though.

I adore "Message Sent", but I, too,  find Solas' continued use of "da'len" jarring, more so than Ellana's playful use of "hah'ren".  I think his initial use in-game of "da'len" was the equivalent of reciprocating the extended olive branch by acknowledging the existence of their shared kinship and the respect Lavellan was clearly offering.  His hesitation in using the endearment, at least, to me, demonstrates he views her as anything but a child.  Then again, I have to remind myself that this is Sheila's version of Solas, not my own.  Perhaps her Solas does view Ellana as a child and always will.  It is an alternate universe, after all.  And if Ellana finds his hands "vulgar" (chapter 11:  Shayna Street) and thinks that an attractive quality, who am I to argue?

I might be remembering the scene wrong, but I took the reference to "vulgar" to mean that she thought her own fascination/desire from looking at his hands was the vulgar thing. Not his hands. Because most of us can agree that that's probably the last thing to find disagreeable about the man. :P

Also, with the emotional torture that came with Mordin, I should've been more prepared for my multitude of Solas feels (and Cole).
