I can't really think about fancasting Solas because Solas is just a wonderful creation of a team with amazing results. Those expressions = 
I'm struggling to find the perfect Solas for my fancast but Karen David aka Galavant's Princess Isabella comes pretty close to my recent Lavellen Seranni.
Oooh, I kind of think a bald James McAvoy looks like Solas... Must be those eyes. They've got that dreamy, intelligent look to them.
I remembered that RoyalRel (aka ruxandralache on Tumblr) edited a picture of James McAvoy to look more like Solas. 
Gotta keep the game going. Unfortunately it seems Solas is the plot device meant to do this.
I don't foresee a situation like with Morrigan either. Whatever Solas is doing, he wants us far away from it. Which in itself is worrying but we already know he likes to lay everything he can on his own shoulders.
When we get the Wolf Hunt DLC, I imagine it'll be more of just a hint at what he's planning on doing. I highly doubt his story will get resolved in one DLC (at least I hope it isn't. This is the freaking Dread Wolf we're talking about. He could drive a whole game by himself after all the interesting lore we've been getting about him).
I disagree! I think Solas would be able to have an equivalent impact on future games, even if he has a happy ending with Lavellan. Am I on Team Optimism? Yes! But let me explain.
I don't think he's going to be the main antagonist in the next game nor do I think he will be a main cast member. I think he will pull a Flemeth and guide if needed, but that is all.
He can do what he needs to do, and have done it already before crossing paths with the Inquisitor in a DLC. Or, he could need assistance of a kind, even accidentally stumble in her path, and Lavellan could pull the 'don't leave me again' card, and choose to leave the Inquisition. Easy peasy, because we will be with a new protagonist in the next game anyway. If the Inquisitor makes a cameo, it's a simple matter to have excuses ready for whatever outcome was had in the DLC.
Do I think a small population of people exist who want a sad ending for our Machiavellian egg head? Yes. And we might get it. But I also believe we will have the chance for a happy ending... even if we make a sacrifice for our Inquisitor to do so, like give up the Inquisition. There's no good reason not to have both paths available.

Yeah! I might be too optimistic, I confess, but I'm sure we will have the option for a happy ending. For instance in your suggestion, which is probably among the top 5 likely scenarios, he might take the power from the Inquisitor if he needs it... but if it is a romanced Lavellan, he only needs her with him.

It's going to be hilarious if everyone misinterpreted the epilogue and the story just decides to branch off on some other path.
(ie: Flemythal is calling Solas by his code name or something and he's actually some Orlesian bard)

I spent way too much time in the CC both in Origins (until I found the Elf Update mod) and DAI trying to make my elf eyes look like the ones on the NPCs from DA2.

Ahh, glad I'm not the only one who liked the DA2 elf look. Those big eyes were the best. I really liked how they tried to differentiate each race instead of 'short human' 'pointy eared human' 'big bronze-skinned human' in DA:O. The only thing I regret is how much they butchered Zevran :'(

Ugh! What they did with Zevran's face was unforgivable. 
Can't say I was a BIG fan of the DA2 elf redesign. Sure, the eyes were more like how they were described in the books, but it did make the elves look more like... animals to me. Like some kind of goat or sheep. Like when Pol died, I remembered thinking that his face before his death looked like a bleating lamb. 
Of course there were good-looking elves like Fenris, Merrill, and Orsino (and maybe some other elves I'm missing out), but a lot of the rest looked... meh. And don't get me started on Tallis. Brrrr! 
I get what they were going for, but I think they executed it poorly. It made me hard to believe that humans find elves more beautiful when all I could think of is that most of the elves in DA2 looked like goats/sheep (unless you're into that sort of thing...), which is why I'm glad that they changed the elf design for DA:I.
Plus, I can't imagine Solas in big anime uguu eyes.

Talis did look odd, but I have a mod that alters her face texture and only tweaks her face and it's a huge improvement. Even Orana (who gets brought up a lot by people who hate DA2 elves) doesn't look too bad once you remove the makeup.
I really disliked the look of elves in DAO because they were just humans with slightly pointed ears (which couldn't even be seen under most of the hairstyles). DA2 elves looked alien. Attractive elves (like Fenris, Orsino, Jethann and Merrill) looked fantastic while also looking just slightly off.

Elf Update only affects the DAO elves. I like the DA2 elves! The modder did a much better job of creating Zev in this style than Bioware did.

I think I tried that Elf Update for DA:O for a while (since I also have the PC version of DA:O) but I turned it off because my Mahariel looked weird in DA2 style.

If you installed it after you created her then she'll looked screwed up as it affects the player too. My Surana didn't look right until I installed it and created her using it. If you feel like trying it again then there's a couple of mods on the nexus that finish the project.
Solas has been growing on me with each playthrough and now my mage is romancing him. This song keeps coming to mind.
"I'll always be here...hanging on your words, living on your breath, feeling with your skin...I'll always be here."
Even if he leaves my Levellan, he's always going to be with her in her heart. I almost feel bad for her. I've even been naming her staves "Shattered Heart."
For whatever reason, Solas makes me think of Depeche Mode.
