Oh my god, those tweets. I hope it's not gonna be Thane all over again ("hey let's kill 1 of all the LIs no matter what - without giving the player any choice!!"). My heart would shatter into thrice more pieces if Solas dies without any chance to prevent it (dies/fate worse than death/etc - I'm not worried over Bioware's imagination on that aspect).

I'm optimistic, just prepared. Also I feel like even optimism is going to be put through the sad and/or bittersweet before there's a potential resolution. Whatever happens, I do trust Weekes to deliver on characters.

IMO the problem with Thane wasn't so much that he dies. It's the erasure of his ME2 character development and relative lack of romance content that got to me. I don't mind killing off beloved characters; Mordin's death, which Weekes also wrote, was one of my favorite video game moments period. It's the use of death as an excuse to sideline a character that bothers me.
Though I think that's unlikely to happen in Solas's case. He's clearly important to the plot, and I would like to think that the developers took some lessons from the critique that ME3 got in that department.

Yeah, but what if he dies saving the world and you. He dies loved. He dies knowing that he will be remembered as a good man. Dies being surrounded by friends who cared for the man not the myth. I think he would be quite at peace with it and happy. And maybe even a bit relieved. Not saying YOU should be happy about it, death is sad. No matter how..."ok". BUT...if written well I think could be very powerful.
I see where Thane's death was a problem. I thought the scene was incredibly powerful but it was not different for the romance minus an email. So yeah, I get the complaints. But I think BW would do something a bit different.
Or he could live. I dunno.
I mean I think people are reading tooooo much into that tweet. There has been NO reveal for any DLC. They have to remain tightlipped. Solas' story - as we know it - is sad. With or without a romanced Lavellan, he's utterly alone in this time. No matter how how close you headcanon your relationship with Solas as - there's always going to be that sort of...heartbreak for him. It's something you can't really fix. He is the only one that can heal that. He's a very sad man and has resigned himself to being alone. It's sad. I think that's all Patrick Weekes meant.

There seems to be a element of bitter sweet with most of the DA romances so to be honset, even if the Solas story ends in tears.. It kind of fits the theme.
With Alistar- he ether becomes king and breaks up with a non noble, dies fighting the archdemon, watchs you die fighting the Archdemon or sleeps with someone he loaths to save you both.
Anders...well.... As much as I am an Anders fan girl ( yes, i even like DA2 Anders.....please don't shoot me) there is no happy end for him and Hawke.

@freelovefreeway, Team Optimism is immensely grateful for your...optimism, we need you, this banner is getting awfully heavy.
What is this void in my stomach? (no breakfast jokes please
)
Did somebody call for optimism?

Solas has already had a sad story leading up to here. Who says it has to keep on being sad?
If crazy Anders was allowed a chance to live and make my Hawke sound really depressed about it in DAI... Then I still believe there is hope for my Solas b/romance to blossom.
Failing that, Inquisitor Lavellan to be the next Fen'Harel after they defeat Solas in an epic duel.
It could totally happen.
Shuddap. Don't question the logistics. It could TOTALLY happen.
The Elves shall rise again!
..and I get to keep Cole in the divorce.
Also, no offence to the lovely Solas. But I was way more sad about this tweet than the Solas ones:
"Here Lies the Abyss originally was supposed to be where you met, The Architect from DAO DLC"
I always let that dude live. Would have been all kinds of excited if he had popped up. It forever annoys me when you get the letter from the HoF and they talk about having little knowledge of ancient Darkspawn lore. You met the architect! You let him live! You could have talked about all the things! Useless.
I demand a DLC of Solas and the Architect, together. Somehow. Make it a thing.

I freaked out about that. I HOPE we get the Architect. There was already some hints at a Deep Roads/Warden heavy DLC and we KNOW the Archtect was worried about the calling. I hope my magister of beauty returns along with Utha...so I can hear him say "UUUUUTTTHHHAAA". I
The Architect. Would wear a t-shirt. OMG just imagine him hearing about Cory-Bear. He'd be so sad. I KNOW HE LOVED HIM. Right now I'm on an Eredin/White-Walker Hellspiral - i just love my monster husbandos - but I will firmly hope back on the blighted magister train if he popped up in DLC.

The more I learn about the Imperium, the harder its tragedy hits me. Calpernia's short story was just the latest.
I was kind of over the Wardens by DA:I TBH, but if it means getting to hang out with the Architect, I will totally dungeon through agonizing, interminable Deep Roads again. I thought he was splendid and magnificent back in DA:A, and knowing he's an ancient magister is just the icing on the cake.
I demand a DLC of Solas and the Architect, together. Somehow. Make it a thing.

Solas' sad trajectory worries me, especially since they seem to have had his basic story worked out for a while. Before character personality changes and much before fan reaction. I'm not sure how much the basics will change as of now, so if Solas is destined for tragedy, I don't imagine that changing. Maybe pieces along the way will be adjusted to make it more satisfying but not the entire outcome.
But sad is fine. As long as it's good sad. Don't butcher his character or make him an irredeemable jerk or kill him off unceremoniously and I'll be just peachy (and drowning in feels). Though I'd prefer a happy ending!

I absolutely agree about Thane - his change of personality/ME2 development was the worst thing they did. Also, the lack of romance specific content, the fact they changed what was Kepral's Syndrome, the fight with Kai Leng where Shepard & co are standing still like potatoes,... But I still think a Love Interest shouldn't die with no other option - in my opinion, it's not the same as Mordin (whose death was so well written, I totally agree - I wouldn't want a different scene). They chose to make Thane a LI, and he was the only one who couldn't live through the end. Imo again, that shouldn't happen to a LI.
I really hope you're right about Solas
(though it's the first time we have a LI so important / so linked to the plot, I think? The rules might be different in the dev's minds in this case). But I think Weekes had said he didn't agree with what happened around Thane, no? I trust Weekes, but I'm afraid to hope too much again.

You're right, if it happens, it depends on how it's written. And if someone can write a ""good"" death scene, it's Weekes (Mordin's death was so well-written and I've never seen anyone being bitter or angry about it)
I do hope he was talking about Solas' past and/or current situation - because we still have to discover the next part ![]()
((Sorry for the very pessimistic post about Thane/Solas etc - I was quite young when the Thane thing happened and it hurt me a lot at the time (not only the fact it was unfair, but also all the things around it - the trolls, Bioware's silence, how Chris Priestly handled it, etc. Thank you both for answering with positivity and optimism
)).

Oh, I mentioned it a little while back but it basically shakes out like this: if Solas dies and doesn't get derailed into a straight-up villain, my Lavellan's going to pull a Flemythal with his soul wisp and take up the mantle of the Dread Wolf. That way the two of them can share his burden, and he never has to be alone again.
it. =D

I will try to be optimistic about all of this. I will hold on to the hope we get something happy. If my heart is going to be crushed, might as well be as crushed as hard as it can be.
That is kind of tragic in itself.

Yes, this. I'd like the option for bittersweet or happy, but if it's going to be tragedy and horror it had damn well better make sense and bring up feelings because of that. Not just some cheap "feels" tacked on with the suggestion that you should feel a certain way "because." Solas is a complex character. I'm sure his story is too. I want to see justice done to that before I even care about anything involving the romance.
Mordin's story and end are a good example of that kind of sensible writing and feelings, and since we've got the same writer working on Solas I'm sure it will be all right. I just can't help but feel anxious for the character and what will come of him now. I don't really have expectations either way and am open to where the story will go. Just... make it count, you know? ![]()

If it must (but really, I would hope not. I'm becaming tired of the most inevitable tragic romance being all for straight female PC) be tragic, I'd like for my character to have the chance to end up dead with Solas. I'm tired of seeing female character became widowed (not really, since Bio doesn't let my character marry, but still).
I'm more on the wagon that there will be choice. Morrigan had choice of run away in the Eluvian with her love. Anders can run away with Hawke. With Alistair is like a minefield, but stayng together is possible. Mass Effect 3 was heavily criticized for how Thane and Jacob were handled. Making impossibile a reunion with Solas would meant nothing was learned at all from ME3.

Out of curiosity, why do you think love interests shouldn't die with no other option? I've seen this opinion on occasion and never really had the opportunity to pick anyone's brains on it
Assuming that the story is well-written, what differentiates Mordin from Solas?
