Ehh, I think the sentinels were slaves. I think they were willing slaves, but I think they were slaves. They had vallaslin. Solas says that means slavery. If vallaslin sometimes meant slavery and also sometimes meant "non-slave priests," then Solas wouldn't have corrected the Dalish interpretation. Markings that honor the guards...because the priests at the temples wear them. That'd be a legit interpretation that Solas wouldn't need to go all Solas on. The vallaslin on the priests may even be where/how the Dalish got the distorted idea of what the vallaslin were. But the vallaslin can only ACTUALLY be slave markings if the priests were ACTUALLY slaves.
That is a good point, too. Abelas does say he is "bound" -- but whether it's by his doing, or Mythal's, I do not know. Given that they wore vallaslin, and the information Solas shares, one would infer they carry the markings as slaves. It does make sense to me as well that it is a sign of fealty and servitude -- maybe since elvish can be such a flexible language, those also go hand in hand with slavery. Not necessarily -- but not not necessarily?
I'm going to stick with thinking of them as Mythal's samurai. Only obviously, they didn't go pull a 47 Ronin. Unless that's where Abelas is going. Hah.
Edit: And yes! I do believe that while Solas and Mythal are considered friends, maybe they didn't start out that way. Solas obviously doesn't agree with some of Mythal's practices (the Well). As a form of spreading knowledge, it's ace. As a gaes? Not so much. And, unless he was born among them or founded them (or was enslaved to them), this might be why Solas was welcomed among the Forgotten Ones -- he opposed the Pantheon's beliefs. But then he probably learned the Forgotten Ones were a little crazy, too. Probably contributed to his trust issues.
