That article makes me want to dig through some Native People's lore and see what jives with Solas as he is in the game, and what would jive as a basis for his cocky arrogant younger self. Thanks for sharing!

I agree.

Also, for those that ~do~ like the whole halla/wolf trope, I guess I never really saw the halla as being some sort of wimpy prey animal to be honest. I always got a sort of white stag/deer or unicorn type vibe from the lore, and with what they tend to represent in myth and legend, they have pretty powerful spiritual significance and aren't wimpy at all. Though they tend to be extremely difficult or impossible to catch, so I'm not sure that necessarily bodes well for Lavellan/Solas getting a happy ending! ;)

I think I've only read one fic so far that had hints of Fen'Harel/Ghilly, which I liked:

Gwent.  WOOOOOO!  (would love for that game to be multiplayer)

Obviously we know he plays chess.  But anything that requires strategy. Something that on its face is simple, but it takes a lot to actually be skillfull.

Now I want to see Solas and Uncle Iroh from Avatar: The Last Airbender face off in Pai Sho :D  My money's on Iroh.

I didn't know ginger had flowers! That's an awesome nickname.

Flowering ginger comes in all sorts of colors; my co-worker has perfume made out of it, and it smells a bit like sweeter jasmine.  The stuff that we eat usually doesn't flower, but its relatives do:

Ginger%2057f.jpg

Took me a while to come up with it.  As you guys have pointed out, flower nicknames can be a little awkward.

But what faction would he use?

Eh, stupid question, scoia'tael obviously.

Eff Scoia'tael - it's a weak deck.  If he used that I would mock him and destroy him with a well timed frost/fog card from the most beautiful and sexual Nilfgaard deck.

Oh, that's pretty.

I suppose Lavender could apply since she has lavender eyes. I absolutely love the scent of lavender.

I just looked up some flower meanings and this sounds appropriate for post-game. Maybe she'll start wearing one of these, especially the purple one in the pic, as a symbol to herself of the positive and negative.

Anemone on a darker note indicates fading hope and a feeling of having been forsaken. On a positive note it symbolizes anticipation.

On names: I find it quite difficult to imagine a nickname Varric would give my Quizzy. He seems in awe of her half the time, so I couldn't imagine a cute little flower name.

On wolves; I'm not really big on when people really really overstate the wolfishness of Solas/Fen'Harel, particularly in the context of Arlathan. Like, within the context of iconography, or quaint Dalish lore - that's fine, stories exaggerate, and it's a big part of symbolism surrounding Fen'Harel. But I imagine the reality of the Elvhen empire to be different from those stories, and I imagine it refers more to his personality, his intentions and actions, his modus operandi, his position on the edge of the pantheon, etc.

Particularly, I've read fanfic before which refers to 'The Beast Within' or 'The Wolf Inside' or something overly dramatic and just.... no. Especially in a sexual context, I can't be doing with it (it's like a male, lupine version of 'inner goddess', yuck). Too much just reminds me of the amazon reviews of the three wolves t-shirt. Too cringeworthy for my taste.

Personally I like the idea of him having a wolf shapeshift, since his fellow elvhen god Flemythal has a High Dragon form.  But that's as far as it goes.

I could see that, since it's not as if other characters haven't shapeshifted through the series... but when it gets down to people suggesting Solas acts like a dog, or is somehow vicious and dominant "because wolves," or use that shapeshifted form in a sexual context? At best it's an eyeroll inducer. At worst there's not enough bleach and vomit bags for me.

It will be funny if we learn that all the wolf stuff was just slapped on him as an honorific and has nothing to do with Solas and anything literally wolfish. Would be a good lesson in not taking things too far out of context. :P

The artist has a tumblr ( http://thedutchesse.tumblr.com/) and a storenvy shop ( http://thedutchesse.storenvy.com ). I really recommend her, her charms are perfect and beautiful and very durable (I already had a Thane, still asgood as new after a year of intense use). And look at the freckles on Solas' nose and cheeks, oh my <3

And it would be a nice parallel to all of the Herald of Andraste stuff getting out of hand.  Especially if you have a quizzy (like a lot of Lavellans, I suspect) who wants nothing to do with the honorific.

I think that's it TBH - regarding the honorific. I would believe he could shapeshift but that's where it stops. It may have been a favored form.  We also know from Viv and Morrigan it's very rare and a lost art and only really powerful mages can do it.

Also, beyond the actualy form, he's not very "wolfish". The fan fiction that depict him as somewhat aggressive or on the edge of being...violent or somewhat scary with hints of abusive tendencies is so inconsistent with what we see in game.  If that's your kink...then be free...but like for actual characterization purposes...no. He's very respectful and would likely be very loving and kind to a romanced Inquisitor. He's pretty much that way with friends.  He's pretty patient too.  There is one...popular depiction of him that almost reminds me of the way Draco Malfoy is written in fanfiction in Harry Potter.  Like this sort of snarky, *******, jerk who I'm kind of anxious that he's about to get violent with the Inquisitor.   It's amusing/disheartening and speaks to how "whoosh"(flew right over their head) people were with the game and his character in general.

Oh yeah, you are right, it does go too far sometimes. I do like the symbolism in general...but it is just supposed to be symbolism I think. Maybe the fandom has a tendency to over think it too much, or take it a little too literal sometimes? It's a fantasy game with Magic. But I remember this used to really give me headaches with the whole Anders vs Justice vs Vengeance debates sometimes. I'm like, gah, it's a metaphor/allegory! :P

So I guess the questions of whether he is really Fen'Harel, or an elf possessed by him, or whether Fen'Harel was actually once a wolf or a spirit of a wolf...is sort of irrelevant to me. I don't think it changes the narrative all that much, and should probably be left up to interpretation.

So...in my fanfic "Wolf Caged"  I wrote about Solas and my Lavellan's first night together. I called his lust for her the wolf inside him wanted to escape it's cage. After they did the deed, the wolf returned to the cage. Is something like that alright? Because I also don't like the whole idea of him acting like an animal. I think they way I did it was more of a metaphor. I don't know. It was the first time I had ever written anything like that.
