Yeah, Vivienne is kinda like that for me. I have made gains in her approval since Redcliffe, but not enough to offset being pro-mage and yet she is not truly pissed with me anymore.

I am pretty sure that Viv is going to try to kill my Lavellan one day. She hates my Lavellan. Her cold nastiness is so bad that at the end when Morrigan is talking about people already plotting the downfall of the Inquisitor......Vivienne came to my mind first.

And the weird thing is all of the other companions get along with my Inquisitor. All of them.

Viv is the same for my Adaar.  She's really, REALLY hard to get along with if your major world decisions (especially with respect to the mages) clash with her since there are so few opportunities to bump her approval.  To my immense surprise, she and my Lavellan got along fine.  But Clariel went the templar route (conscription) and dodged most of Viv's major approval hits.

Solas definitely is easy to get approval from. Hell, in the Hinterlands alone, while you are trying to gain enough power to go to Val Royeaux, nearly every side/fetch quest you do will snag you some Solas lovin'. Unless people are only closing a couple rifts, going immediately to VR, grabbing Viv, Sera, Bull, and Blackwall, and quickly switching out Solas for one of the others, then they should easily have a net positive with him.

My f!Dwarf has chosen a good number of contrary choices to him, and he still calls her "my friend", when clicked on.

Vivienne is the only one that did not wind up in a friendship state with my Lavellan. Her self-interest and crappy personality just turned me off completely. Especially when I did her mission and gave her the heart she wanted and she used me for her own interests. I didn't even recruit her on my current playthrough.

Yeah....my Lavellan ran around freeing mages and may as well been on a mountain screaming "Down with the Chantry!"

I did just make a human for a pro Chantry/Circle/Templar Play through. Maybe Vivienne will like her.

Hope nobody here thinks that I hate Solas or something, as a person or a character (opposite is true, he's one of my absolute favs in the franchise, second only to cole, his personality and plotline are endlessly fascinating to me), or that I think you have to think Solas is abusive (I don't think he's abusive btw personally), racist (neutral on this one, its my Inquisitor who's the proper racist lmfao) or anything else from insertadjectivelisthere in order to like him or be a fan or something.

 

I can understand why people may have gotten this idea however as I play an ******* Lavellan, sometimes have a blunt sense of humor, sometimes enjoy the potential grimdark/starcrossed pair kind of angle for Solavellan (BUT IF THEY OFFER ME A HAPPY ENDING OMG i will take it and be jubilant, I feel really sad for Solas a lot of the time) and tend to talk more about Solas' grayness rather than goodness (but note I dont talk about his evilness either, hes a study in gray for me). 

nobody has suggested to me that they have this idea about me but here we go just in case.

 

we just all have different ideas and games/storylines and I like that BW characters evoke such different reactions in their fans

I got the ring with my rogue Lavellan, by basically pandering in my first convos with her, doing well at Val Royeux and getting the real snowy Wyvern heart. She hates my mage Lavellan.

I did, witht two of my three PC's. The canon one is a mage Lavellan, but I think she conscripted the mages. I can't remember any specific choices, other than helping her retrieve the Circle books and doing her quest. It didn't feel particularly difficult even though I didn't agree with her on some things, unlike Sera that I had to metagame the hell out of her conversations after reading on the boards what gives you approval. She was the only one I found really difficult to be on good terms with. Definitely not Solas, as you all said just asking questions gives you several small approval bumps. Of course if you go all "ELFS ARE IDIOTS AND SPIRITS ARE DEMONS" maybe it's a bit tricky, yes.

 

At first I didn't care much for Viv's character, but she's grown on me; in my headcanon she's one of the best friends of my Solasmance Lavellan.

I think Tumblr is reacting to things I've admittedly seen before, but not really that often. I've seen it said before that people who do not acknowledge Solas' flaws are not good fans. The problem is, in some circles it's become that if you don't agree with them in reading rather bad things into everything Solas does or you try to argue their points, you're just one of those silly fans who wants to pretend he's perfect. Considering the people who say that tend to read waaay too much negative motivation into many of Solas' actions and traits, much of the Tumblr Solas fandom naturally disagrees and are thus criticized for it. 

 

But again, I don't really see it all that often. And people are getting a bit too heated over it.

From what I've observed, the issue isn't so much the thoughts about the character. It's more that certain emotions about characters start to become emotions towards that character's fans. Thus the anger and hurt feelings and the odd back and forth. This fandom has been doing this as long as I can remember, though. Definitely didn't start in DAI! And I notice that, in some places, there's a particular trend in it happening to characters who are particularly loved by a large female fanbase. Just an observation.

Real life people weird me out sometimes with their insistence that there's a "right" or "wrong" way to perceive certain people and events.

But yeah. I think there's some kind of phenomenon when a fandom stews in its own juices long enough, aspects of characters and events get blown out of proportion, and they keep building things out of these headcanon blocks rather than what's actually there. An good example would be all the literal and non-literal Ron the Death Eater fanfics from back in the day. Ron has his flaws, but, um. no.

Thanks guys   As I say it was just in case. I love Solas. Fascinated by his character and plotline. Insanely curious about where it will go. Hooked on this story arc. Personally find him a study of shades of grey but adore him nonetheless and think everyone else is entitled to their own thoughts.

AH I just stumbled across the daconfessions confession which I suspect led to today's stirrings it all makes sense now hahaha

Seriously. Yeah he disapproves of things but so does every other companion. I don't know why I always see people get on Solas about this, especially since I find him one of the easiest companions to get approval from. I was having difficulty with Sera, Cole and Vivienne. Solas approves every friggin time you investigate. Even questioning the things he says gets you approval where it might get you disapproval from others (which is why I find it strange when people say you have to kiss Solas' ass to get him to like you. I'm like, which game did you play?)

 

Then again, I've seen people constantly support the Chantry and the Templars and then they're like "Why doesn't Solas like me god he's such an arrogant jerk". And I'm like, uhhhhh.....I think the reason is obvious.... His approval mechanics aren't different from anyone else's and I swear you get more chances to up his approval than any other DAI companion. 

 

I saw a blog post in which the writer described Solas as a 'mansplainer' who dared to lecture her (Dalish) character about the elves and never shut up about himself.  The writer also never finished the game so...

Ugh, that confession. I get the feeling that that person was expecting Ianto, and was completely baffled when -zomg- Solas was a completely different kind of character. I shouldn't have responded, I always get het up and say pointless things.

@Illyria: I was having an extremely paranoid day and somehow convinced myself that the rumblings in the hive on my dash was because of something I'd said or done to upset people, LOL (neuroses + lack of sleep aw yea). but then I found the confession and it explains everything haha.

 

Overall imo the solas fandom is pretty stable compared to some others out there? I guess every boat has its days to rock on is all. it'll calm up soon

@dawnstonedagger and @Vorathad - Thank you for info!! I am a complete idiot. LOL! I have never taken the "How can I help the Circle" dialogue option. /facepalm! I always "assumed" it would lead to a verbal fight, with any of my PC's that might be very pro-mage. And for the rest - being more neutral - would force them in to an unnecessary debate.
