Well, I do wonder if Mythal was different somehow from the rest of the pantheon. The way Solas talks about her after the Well, calling her a creature, as if even he's not totally certain what she is or where she came from. He could just be deflecting, since obviously he does know more. But I wonder if the rest of the pantheon were 'children' in the sense that Mythal and Elgar'nan were their creators.

None of the pantheon are related.

Pls no.

I just wish they'd stop with the vague Dalish bedtime stories that they pass as history. Just let me see the godssssssssss.

No he doesn't. He lies about the translation. He actually tells him that he is now free of his role and that he can find a new purpose and doesn't need to go into eternal sleep. But Abelas does mean "sorrow", so he was sort of telling him to find a new name... In a weird way.

A lot of elven translation work is based on fans theory.  Abelas did take his name (it's in one of the codex entries from the Temple) and what Solas said was 'find a new name' just with a lot more poetry.

These make me want to redo my world state and reconsider my specialization. Does anyone know what the conditions are for Solas commenting on you specialization? He didn't say boo to me about it when I went with Rift mage, but Cole did.

Solas' comments about a Rift Mage are interesting because he mentions Quizzy is using the Mark to do it while it took Solas years of study to do the same thing.

Does Cole say the same thing about all mage specs?

Some of Warden Alistair's non-romance lines are amazing.  For my first DAI playthrough I used a mixed up worldstate combinding my two (yes two.  I love my Surana too much to have her in just one) canon worldstates (Leliana romance with Warden!Alistair performing the Dark Ritual - my actual Leliana worldstate has King Alistair with Loghain making the US and my Alistair romance one has the Dark Ritual and him remaining a Warden).  The way Alistair talks about a non-romanced Warden who had him do the Ritual was a really great bit of characteristation.  He hates her, and actually expects her to be in with whatever Clarel was planning.

Hmm, that IS an interesting find.

It's nice to see that forcing Alistair to sleep with a woman he hates when he's not in love with the Warden has consequences.

A few more thoughts on the rebel trickster.   One thing that had me puzzled was the fact that Solas and Felassan (who definitely had some sort of connection to Fen'Harel) were both mages, yet the elven folktale speaks of a trickster warrior and Shartan is thought of as a warrior, Andraste even gives him a sword.   Then it hit me, of course Fen'Harel in his earlier guises was a arcane warrior.    That would account for the fire arrows used by his followers to save Andraste.   It was magical fire.   Back in DAO and in Masked Empire the mages were able to light their followers weapons with elemental magic, sadly something we can no longer do.

Solas tells us that the Knight Enchanter specialism is based on the older arcane warrior and the Knight Enchanter is designed for leadership, for you to be at the forefront of battle.   Solas had the Rift Mage specialism but that doesn't mean he doesn't have the knowledge of arcane warrior.    It was just that Rift Mage was more appropriate to his role in this particular war.

There is another entry in WoT2 about an agent of the Inquisition who was a Dalish apprentice who decided he wanted to be an arcane warrior.   He left his clan and travelled into the wilderness where he found an ancient elven shrine where the secrets of the ancient order were kept.     It occurred to me that the arcane warriors must have had a patron god but none of the other gods have been associated with them.   What if the founder of the order was Fen'harel himself?      The text doesn't mention who the shrine was dedicated to but that the elf spent years meditating there, dedicating mind, body and soul to the art form.   That makes me think that during meditation he made contact with the Fade and thus to Fen'harel, or one of his friendly spirits, and that is how he acquired the knowledge.

I certainly found Knight Enchanter very effective against dragons, so I imagine that a full arcane warrior would be as well, and I wouldn't mind guessing that those tyrants he fought against in the folktale had the ability to turn into dragons too.

This would fit in very nicely with the idea of Fen'harel serving as the keeper of the peace, whether it was protecting the commoners or just preventing the gods and their followers from killing each other. Nobles would hire Arcane Warriors as bodyguards, but so would their rivals. The Arcane Warriors were there to keep the peace, maybe?

I'm down with these Shartan theories. :D

So, the spear of light that Andruil is mentioned as wielding that sounds like it's going to be important? I'm willing to bet June was behind it. I mean, phenomenal, cosmic weapon? Who else but the god of crafts?

Except that it's not an actual complete language, we don't know most of the words or the sentence structure, the devs like to reuse the same word (they often use the same word for my, mine, you and your) and I believe they said somewhere that the language as used in game is actually a cipher.  In short, elven is a sloppy mess and it's difficult to pin down any hard and fast rules about it.

Since we do know that Abelas chose that name for himself it's entirely possible that Solas is saying that he hopes Abelas chooses a new name.

Omg though, the way a romanced Warden Alistair speaks about the HoF is so heartwrenching. The way he sounds after he says he read the letter from her....sigh.

Now just imagine dreams do come true and there is a happy ending for Solas and Lavellan and somewhere in the next game we get to hear Solas talk about her. Just think about how he sounds describing Arlathan. And Alistair isn't very good with words. Solas would probably start to sound like he's reciting lost ancient elven poetry. If he felt comfortable sharing with the new character that is.

.......sigh.......

I don't mean they are related. I just mean, as in the source of the divine spark. Ancient elves might have viewed them as being like ancestors, and themselves as descended from the gods. The Dalish have their myths. But its just a metaphor.

Like Dagna's dialogue about feeling really tall and thinking "all the thoughts". I believe she's referring to the Titans there, and her connection to them.

I only know that Cole comments on the Rift mage because that's all I have played so far, seriously considering a tweaked world state run with my canon Lavellan so I'll let you know if he does

I spend a lot of time solemnly wondering how compatible with continued entanglement with the Inquisitor (romanced or friend) Solas' plans and endgoals truly are

Not very, I suspect.

I much prefer thinking about that to the way he talks about a non-romanced Warden who got him to perform the Ritual.

I think the Alistair romance content in DAI was an apology to the warden!Alistair players.  'Yes, you're going to have to make a heartwrenching choice, here's a ton of soppy romance stuff and ice cream'

Don't forget the tale of how Fen'Harel shot an arrow up into the sky to slay a beast.

Maybe the trickster god simply has many different guises/faces or even vessels throughout the ages??

I'm surprised how literally many people take these tales. Don't forget that many myths or legends aren't supposed to be that way - they're supposed to be metaphoric.

I'd also like to point out that this particular tale speaks more of Fen'Harel preferred strategy and NOT class or actual use of bows or arrows. And this strategy is pretty much identical to the way Solas has beaten Iron Bull in their banter chess match (Solas lets IB think that he's given up and about to lose the match, only to win the round with a pawn he's moved to strategic place, while IB was focused on decimating his part of chessboard).

Even the fact that Felassan actually uses the name for the arrow used in this tale speaks volumes of how metaphoric - and not literal - this tale is supposed to be.

Probably not, and he seems to kind of be almost pre-apologizing to an Inquisitor he's on good terms with before he disappears. Because he knows something is about to go down as a result of his action. His unfinished painting maybe was a sign of hope, that he could leave with the orb on better terms, but everything has definitively changed. He's got a rushed desperation and a need to act....somehow. That second where his entire face changes always kills me, because the truth underneath is so painful.

Well funny enough, I just watched some videos of rival Solas conversation......and if his sarcasm actually reveals his intention.... He may actually have the plan to be around after he acts out whatever his plans are. He outright talks about collapsing the Veil and he himself subtley changing reality.

So now I am more worried for the Inquisitor.

He also speaks about being a part of plenty of causes and how people are happy to martyr their chanpions.

Oh dear poor Dread Wolf, what happened to you.......

Yes, they're basically fables. Felassan is the ultimate Fen'Harel fanboy. He doesn't necessarily believe the tales, but he openly admires Fen'Harel's qualities as the tales highlight (and embellish). The tactics are the thing.

It had to be weird back in Arlathan with these kinds of fables popping up if you were one of the gods.

@Illyria - oh thank you but it's okay! I'm super excited for wherever his/their story is going to go even if it ends sadly. I'm confident and optimistic that whatever route they decide to go down it will be emotive, beautiful and well-handled. :) I'm in the "I don't mind if there's no happy ending" camp.

@midnight_tea - I did say it was a tale :P  and was only mentioning it for the sake of discussion and proposing an alternative possible idea, speculation is fun. I do find sometimes the simplest explanation is the more likely but with games with worlds and layers like these you never know  :D and that's what's enjoyable about it.

just imagine their faces if they come back and read the modern day stories. Especially if they are all just incorrect as can be. They would probably spend the first decade of their freedom just laughing.

Seriously, the game overall has its flaws but such amazing work from everyone involved with Solas. The truly subtle facial animations, the emotion, the writing, voice acting, motion capture, everyone.

It's another reason why I'm not worried about the character going forward in terms of whether they 'ruin' him or whatever. They took such amazingly detailed care with him in every way.
