Going on a tangent, it just occurred to me that this might be why he had so much difficulty resisting Lavellan, even if he knew it was wrong to pursue a relationship with her. If you think of it, one moment he has unlimited female attention, then the next he wakes up and he is a hermit with a pretty bad reputation (either an elven apostate or Fen'Harel don't exactly have a desirable status at present days). He himself admits, "It's been a long time." And then Lavellan actually takes an interest in him. Of course he would feel this is very special.
Special is probably an understatement - though form his perspective it might feel more like a massive cosmic joke at his expense. Think about it - he's been beaten by life likely numerous times (be it by his own doing or someone else's... likely both) and he's on the last turn on his path to finish his grim mission and here, suddenly, the universe places on his way a young, smart, attractive woman who showers him with love, affection and understanding.
It would be the grandest irony of them all, if the thing that made Solas fail at his mission weren't demons, Blight, forgotten gods or rivals, horrors from Fade or beyond, thousands of years of solitude, betrayals, persecution, slander or else, but LOVE ![]()
