You'd be surprised sometimes. I've moderated some game sites over time and a lot of the worst offenders are like 25-40. Like, the really awful, name calling, disrespectful folks. I think the type of issue people care about and method might differ among age groups.
I know a lot of people found Inquisition and played it as their first DA game. And if they did, impressions of characters who are maybe a bit more gray than they're used to, like Solas (whose appearance is seeded in many, many ways over time in DAO/DA2 and even through here because I count DAI as more 'seeding' since the reveal is at the end, or if they haven't been around for the progression of Cullen, maybe some of the younger ones are more apt to overreact, but a lot of the younger fans are also very, very open to a lot of the possibilities and ideas and tolerance and discussions of multiple issues, so I would be careful with trying to lump people together.
The whole let's spin Fen'Harel one way and filter that through and then offer up some additional perspective...and some people taking the fact there seem to be some issues with the Dalish interpretation (to put it mildly) as a total vindication, well, that is rather shortsighted, IMO.
But you all, I like you. We can discuss these things and be cool.

Um, I never said criticism is toxic. Just the opposite. I said some people have issues in attempting to criticize but they are belligerent or think something isn't open to criticism. Hence some people in those corners of fandom who don't know how to have a civil discussion about anything including flaws in characters they love.
Learning to mute tags and curate who you follow is important anywhere, really.
Then I totally misunderstood you. Sorry! So just take my post as not directed at you - point still stands though. So just take it as venting.

But criticism isn't toxic. And that's actually not very true, tags tend to get MORE **** trolling on these advertised weeks than not. Again, I'm for celebration of the character and content creation because the fandom(DA) is dying a bit since we are so far from release, but these "positivity" weeks are so bizarre. Like what does that even mean? I am "Solas Positive" - I enjoy his character and engage the community meaningfully. Am I not Solas positive because I think his most compelling ending is death for various reasons that I've discussed? Am I not Solas positive if I think his most compelling friendship and relationship is with Cassandra? Am I not Solas positive that I prefer my Lavellan as the Inquisitor and don't define her by her relationship with Solas? All these questions in more! According to general tumblr - I am not. And am not discussing him the "right" way. AND That's not actually critical discussion. That's just preference. Have fun trying to talk about his character in-depth.
And that's not just for Solas. I have actual and significant issues with Cullen's character(and the writing) and am happy to discuss them in good faith and not be rude or combative but like...holy ****...the fandom. Must protect Disney Prince at all costs...from jokes involving an Office episode 5 years old. Same problem with Anders fans.
You guys sorted out already that Cee wasn't saying criticism is toxic, and whatnot, so that's cool. But I did still want to say something about 'Solas Positivity'. I think it really depends on your view of it. You are being positive regarding Solas and his character by having in depth discussions and whatnot, yeah! But like it or not, sometimes people are going to come in and rain on your parade in one way or another. It doesn't happen often here, but on Tumblr, I get the impression it does. So a week dedicated to being positive is really just a way of inviting people to share more than they would, in a more accepting way than normal. And of course, it boosts the creative community and creates an event of sorts to make things lively. No one is obligating anyone to partake, it's just there if you do. No one is saying you're not a positive Solas fan if you don't. But hey, it's still there and still going on.
As for people talking about his character in depth on Tumblr and creating clashes/blind criticism/etc... I think that's a mistake already. You know what I mean? Tumblr is more of an image board (inspiration board, even) than it is a forum for discussion. Using it as such is a mistake a lot of people make and I think that's where some of the bad reputation comes from. If you want discussion, move elsewhere... like here, Reddit, or even Deviantart. Somewhere more conducive to fluid conversation and debate. ![]()

I'm not that surprised -- I was actually more surprised that they released DA:I for all of the above+ predecessors initially! Maybe it was a console transition period for their demographic. But it's also one reason I will always support PC over console ... you never get 'obsolete' systems. ![]()

Sadly, it also meant technical limitations when creating Inquisition - many of the things people are complaining about were directly affected by that.
I wonder if that's the reason why they dropped it - will there be something interesting gameplay-wise with upcoming DLC(s) that old-gen consoles wouldn't be able to support? Or did they look at DLC/game sales and decided that the number of players there isn't worth investing time and money to create PS3/Xbox360 versions?

Ooof. That sucks. I mean really and truly that sucks. I mean I had my criticisms of them doing it in the first place but like...they committed. Sunny, I am sorry - and all the rest of the last gen console players

Yeah, I completely understand and it is probably like you said, why they dropped it.
It just a bit sad that it has been dropped right before the *possible* story DLC that might address the end of the game.

Probably a mix a both - they likely looked at the numbers of how many were playing on the old-gen consoles and were like...it's not worth it.
They may have wanted to do something MORE. We'll see I suppose, but given this, I think we'll hear something soon.

No. Only because Tumblr was created for open discussion. You can write paragraphs of long-form debate on there -- unlike say twitter also you're not having to participate in the same community that allowed a pedophile board run rampant until they decided they wanted investors(Reddit). Also, you can have meaningful discussion, it's not conducive because they have no moderation in any way so people being harassed by assholes had no recourse. They JUST implemented a proper block functions.
It's only relegated to an image board because of the artist community found it easier to use than deviant art and then people that wanted to talk were getting harassed into next week so they just posted gifs of cats. But I have seen meaningful and interesting thoughts crop up there. A lot of the meta about the characters was actually borne from tumblr. So yes, it's possible.

I understand why they're doing it, but it still feels wrong. I don't like the thought of last-gen users having to pull up Youtube Let's Plays to see how the DLC for their game turned out.
Well it's an RPG to boot. Like it's not YOUR character. I mean the RP part of that varies from player to player, but if you're like more serious about it...it just sucks. Also, unless I missed it, they have to repurchase the game as well? I mean they already spent $60.00 if not more on the game. So now they have to purchase it again? I know it's not full price anymore but the least they could have done was to give those upgrading a free copy.

It does feel unfair, but think about it... they likely would have to invest serious money into creating old-gen ports and then going through with certification, which likely means taking a significant sum of money from resources pool for either future DLCs for DAI or DA4. In that case it means either Let's Play or ditching old-gen consoles for sake of next-gens/PCs, but it also likely means higher quality (or more) content for everyone, overall.

At this point I'm just mentally swearing and rudely gesturing in BW's direction but suffice to say no I will not be buying a new console or a copy of DAI for it.
And when I finally have enough saved to upgrade my pc I wont be buying then either.

It does suck for those who have last gen consoles. Although I can't help but feel that they shouldn't have even supported last gen consoles to begin with. And yes that sounds mean to those who play on them but that's the nature of the industry. At some point they have to stop putting games on older consoles and focus on the newer ones. It's a resources issue.
What they *should* do is allow people with older consoles to get one copy of the game for a newer console at no charge - but that will never happen.
