I would say it somewhat depends on the attitude and potential society that Kossith are/used to be. Due to very selective breeding over 1-2 thousand years, modern Qunari are most certainly not much like their ancient Kossith relatives. Were Kossith more akin to dragons with an internal rage and very loose tribal society?  Were they structured similarly to modern Qunari with intense personal restrictions based? Or did the race have a schism due to a group beginning to develop independence and some semblance of society/structure?

Did Kossith have a schism first and send a vanguard + pilgrims to Par Vollen, or did they try to live on whatever homeland they came from, but found it to be incompatible with whatever thing was important to them? The Qunari didn't have much trouble taking over Par Vollen, which means they came from some sort of established society. Whether that society is the entirety of the Kossith, or they are a branch that separated and later found their homeland to be too hostile is the question.

Oooh good points! I guess I sort of assumed that the Qunari/Kossith genetic divergence happened after the split. It never occurred to me that it could have happened before the schism. Derp.

I'm gonna try ignoring Friday's theme (Solas + Rare Pairs/OT3). I don't mind seeing Solas/M!Lavellan but there are certain Solas pairings that just don't tickle my fancy that I know are going to pop up. -_-

Solas/m!Lavellan is the only non-canon pairing I can put up with.  Solas/humans just bothers me.  It's like, 'yeah, we crushed your homeland, enslaved your people, made your religion illegal and keep your people walled off in the poorest district of the cities and now I'm banging your god.'

Oh my god, this so much. I was sort of taken aback when Bull mentioned that bit. Like... the concept that the tamassrans have to do this and don't even get to choose it just makes my skin crawl.

I'm not a fan of all the retcons of Qunari culture in DAI.  :(

I don't see where this idea that the culture was 'retconned' comes form (this isn't directed at you personally.  It's something I've seen a lot of).

Expanding on a culture isn't retconning and everything Bull tells us is consistant with earlier Qunari lore (even about how they would accept Krem.  After all, Krem is a warrior.  Warriors = male so Krem = male.  If Krem had wanted to be a tailor like his dad then the Qunari would be confused).

Sten for LI 2015!!!!! Now that I know what "kadan" means.....argh my heart. I mostly blame Lizasaurus and electricfish.

It really bothers me that we're supposed to see Iron Bull and go "Wow. Look how tolerant and chill the qunari are. Look how open and honest he is! He even told me he's a spy! Look how comfortable they are with sexuality! Look how progressive they can be!"

Umm...hello? Bull flat out tells you he's going to send info back to Par Vollen, and by just being there the qunari are taking an unofficial stake in the budding world power that is your inquisition. They feed you dribbles of info through Bull. What is Bull giving them? Troop movements? Psychological profiles of all the major players of the inquisition? All things that are bad news bears in the hands of a potential enemy. Even without the info Bull sends back, just being involved is a huge PR coup.

And Bull is not enlightened. Or progressive. Or promoting sexual freedom. He sees nothing wrong with the qunari breeding programs, the mindwashing, any of it. If he turns Tal'Vashoth, it's only because he chose his friends over his philosophy.

Sorry about the rant. Holy Spaceballs, I just can't stand the qunari. I hope Par Vollen and Tevinter just take each other out at this point.

Bull clears everything he send back with Leliana first.  I doubt she'd let him send anything too vital.

And Bull's attitude on the Qun seems like a man who is trying to convince himself of the validity of the philosophy.  There's a lot of stuff he accepts without question because he was raised in that culture, and maybe if he was a Sten (this is different from being our Sten, mind) he'd continue to accept it because Stens aren't generally sent out into the world.  But he's Ben-Hassrath.  He's seen so much of the world outside Qunari culture and it's making him doubt a lot of things he's been taught.

Well... you're right, actually. And it's most likely that Bull is more liberal than Sten anyway.

The reason, I think, that many people think it was retconned is because the Qunari philosophy was presented in a different way than before.

I think the explanation that always made the most sense to me for the difference in presentation is that Sten is a soldier and Iron Bull is a priest. Sten outright says that it's not his role to educate us on the Qun, so we don't hear that much. The Arishok is like that as well, but as a head of state he's more willing to offer some details to Hawke. Then you have Iron Bull, who is a priest/spy, and quite worldly. I think the Qunari are a combination of all of those viewpoints. :)

So all we have to do now is roll Sten, the Arishok and Bull together into one qunari, and then we'd get The Qunari.

I find this idea way more amusing than I should.

Why? Adhering to this logic: if Krem wanted to be a tailor, that would make him female, case closed. Problem might only be if Krem said "I am male" but wants to be a tailor. And this is something Bull does not seem to have a problem with. No "Damn, you're a girl, you can't be a warrior" like Sten said. Instead Bull's all just "As you say, boss" right from the start (whatever the reasons, because I am sure we can find a few).

However, this "the gender is defined by the profession, not by biology" thing is something that was added (by the fandom?) retrospectively, after DAO. It was never communicated as such in DAO (or the other games). Which is why I dislike it. I want BW to clearly say so in a game to be fine with it.

Krem identifies as a male and goes after a male job, so it fits within the Qun. But if he continued to identify as male and wanted to become a tailor, the Qunari would see him as mentally ill or something. Sten's problem was that the Warden and Leliana identified as women but also fought as warriors.

I think the writers did a good enough of a job expanding on the Qunari in this respect. *shrug* However unpleasant the Qun can be, there is a certain logic to their acceptance of transsexuals.

And my problem is that I never saw the writers expand on this. Or did I miss it? When does the game clearly say that this is the idea of the Qun? I only know fan theories like that but never saw any in-game confirmation. If I only missed it that would make me feel better.

(regarding JOH) Right? There's something poetic in the fact that last and first Inquisitors of their respective age are Dalish elves (even better if both are mages) whose significant others are mysterious Dreamers.

Something makes me wonder about Solas and JOH though... When we go hunting for Ameridan's memories, a lot is said (and commented) about how Dreamers who find themselves near a spirit/demon as powerful as Hakkon experience tremendous pain. According to Solas himself "Dreamers like Telana feel immeasurable pain" even.

Soooo.... does he just silently badass all the way through Frostback Basin if we choose to take him on this adventure  ???  Or is the fact that he himself is (as far as we know) someone powerful/ancient diminishes Hakkon's effect on him??

I think suffering in silence is consistent with his character. When I heard Cassandra make that observation, I could have strangled her. She knew, all that time, while I dragged Solas to every Rift, brought him to Adamant to face Corypheus' demon army AND SAID NOTHING.

So I was thinking of a hypothetical conversation in party banter when this popped into my head:

Cole: Tourmaline and Lapis. Azure, sapphire. His eyes are blue like the sky at dusk and beyond that is the deepest of oceans.

Lavellan: Cole I don't think...

Cole: Bathing, lapping, drenching. I want to feel the waves upon my skin. Drowning in the sea until I am quenched.

Solas: That is.....fascinating.

Right there in the Chargers cutscene and after with Iron Bull expanding on it. :) And then fans use that to clarify Sten's earlier views on the matter. Bull gives the Qun's basic view of such things, and when the writers were asked to clarify, they expanded. It's not unexpected that it would need clarification, it's a rather complicated issue for Bull to sit the Inquisitor down and have a pow-wow. Bull even seems a little short with the Inquisitor over it. Most Qunari probably wouldn't be as defensive of Krem's being identified as a man, just befuddled as to why people would refer him as a her. Bull, being over-protective and more familiar with outsiders, goes all mother-hen.

I think fanon was actually the opposite, that transsexuals lives would be nightmarish under the Qun.

And I was being an ass because I misread your post as asking why Bull didn't have the same problem that Sten did. :P
