I don't know what was in that patch, but now my game doesn't start at all. *long sigh*
And this morning I see that the repair I initiated got stopped at night.
Another day of all the little things going slightly wrong. *drama*

Reading through Tumblr, I still don't get why some people have such a hard time gaining Solas' approval. He's seriously one of the easiest companions to gain approval for even outside of a romance. He has so many things that give him slight approval between his approval every time you friggin investigate and all the elven artifacts and doing all of the little quests that help people. I swear I get to 100% fastest with him and Dorian, since Dorian is really, really easy to please and, as far as I can tell, is designed to be your bff figure.
To me, Cole was surprisingly hard! He disapproved of more than I expected him to. He and Vivienne and Sera were the ones that kept fluctuating for me.

Maybe the decisions people make early are ones he really dislikes, they choose to kill in his personal quest, show closed-mindedness, act like demigods, and don't pick up the artifacts? If he's not in the party, can you still activate them and get credit? He never left my party, so genuine question. Maybe people just don't use him much.
For me, Sera and Vivienne were more difficult, but Sera went back and forth but ultimately wound up in the friend category. Viv was the only one my Lavellan ended not friends with. I didn't do her first quest with the books because there was no way my Lavellan wanted to help with the Circle. She was pro mage freedom all the way.

^This. Solas is usually the one I get max approval the fastest, it sometimes makes me wonder what other people did to p*** him off so much. (EDIT: Most probably what Cee said.)
For me, it was Vivienne and Sera I had the hardest time getting approval. Probably because my Lavellan was pro-mage and too elfy. Come to think of it, yeah even Cole was a bit tricky for me to gain approval too but not as bad as Viv and Sera. Viv had the highest disapproval for me.

They probably do speedruns (especially IF they play mostly for the romance part). And Solas likes completionists ![]()
I am, and no matter what Inquisitor I run, if I pick mages for alliance, I have his approval nearly maxed just by completing most things in Hinterlands/Storm Coast/Fallow Mire, before even finding Skyhold.

He really is. I kinda had to work to get as much disapproval as I could from him when I did my Jerk-quisitor run. Had to keep reminding myself not to use Investigate options.

Did you manage to get him to leave at the end without saying anything? That would be quite the achievement.

I managed to get Cole to a decent approval rating just by taking him to Crestwood and helping the village before going to find Hawke and the Warden. I don't even bother with getting approval with Vivienne anymore, my Lavellan's are just too anti-circle. Sera, well I almost sent her packing after the whole vallaslin thing, but I generally have a decent approval with her too, but then I tend to choose the funny/sarcastic options when talking with her.

It's funny because back in December 'Solas Slightly Approves' was nearly as memetic as 'Morrigan Disaproves (-5)'
And yeah, Sera's approval. The approval she gives for flirting with her as an elf is so slight that it barely made a dent in the damage I got for every major quest I did. Thank the Creators I found out about her Harding Approval.
Lavellan: Sorry Solas, I know we came to the Exalted Plains to find your friend, but I've got to spend a few mintues fliriting with Harding first.
Solas: ?
Lavellan: I JUST WANT THE CUTE LESBIAN TO LIKE ME.
Harding: Uh, I'm actually bisexual.
Lavellan: Not you. Sera.
Harding: :I

Cole also approves of a lot of Hinterlands quests that are completed before you meet him. It's possible to start him off in the party with high approval.

I usually can't help but to play the 'witty/charming diplomat' option and manage to get high/maxed approvals from everyone, Vivienne included (her approval may not be entirely maxed, but at least she thinks even my not-exactly-Circle-or-Chantry-loving characters do a decent job running this whole thing and considers most my characters as friends). I know this game well enough now to be aware when to do certain missions/judgments, who to take, etc....
I'm also apparently a pretty efficient gamer (which is surprising, because me and concept of "efficiency" usually operate on different planes of existence) - can't claim I always make 100% completionist runs, but I usually finish most things and manage to do it well under 100 hours. In fact, I keep being surprised to hear that people have play-through that last 150 or more than 200 hours, TBH o_O

I have 300+ hours between one full playthrough including JoH and one mage who is right before In Your Heart Shall Burn. And some multiplayer (Isabela, you are fun). My canon is mostly complete. I'm only missing some mosaic pieces and maybe two sidequests, and I think one bottle.

With elves/mages I usually up her approval by utilizing Nobility perk in her personal quest and usually playing non-believers (if I pick "I do it for greater good" when reaching Skyhold she greatly approves). Then there's a game of finding Red Jenny caches and strategic use of judgment chair (fortunately decisions I agree with usually don't hurt her approval and sometimes even gives a rather decent bump in it).

Haha. I'm so completionist that I started picking up every single plant I came across. And doing all the requisitions. Until I realized those two elements cannot be killed.
...So much time to do such small things. I have no idea about my hour count, though, and it probably wouldn't be an accurate depiction anyway, as I'm running 6 characters parallel to each other at any given time.

Easy. My current playthrough has me both wanting to conscript mages for role playing and too keep the grey wardens. That right there is -40 approval. It's extremely hard to make up for that loss, in fact I'm not even sure if it could be with him. So I was forced to ally with the mages instead of conscription. Other characters have little quests that make it easy to get approval up, like +5 approval every time you destroy 1 of the 18 red lyrium deposits, or 20+ approval every time you kill one of the 10 high dragons with Bull, or +20 for 3 separate venatori groups. But Solas is mostly just a tiny +1 approvals here and there, with a very rare +5 and an extremely rare +20 that you only get for... The exact opposite of what I wanted to do, ally with mages and exile the wardens. If I made the choices I wanted, I would have ended the game at around 30 approval, not exactly high friendship.

Like I said, Solas likes competitions ("active, hardworking Inquisitors" LOL). This is why he has all the little +1 and +5 peppered everywhere throughout the game.
And if you let him convince people to work for Inquisition when recruiting agents, you'll easy get many +5's in Hinterlands alone (also, let him convince the son of the elven pair who needed medicine to go back to take care of his parents - +5. Let him convince the elf healer from Redcliffe to go to refuggees camp? Another +5. Get ring to the elf widow? Another +5. Have him in the party when telling horsemaster's wife that wolves are dealt with? Another +5. Get the mage healer agent from refugee camp to work for you after utilizing Arcane Knowledge perk? Another +5. Say to zealots that they should spread news about Inquisition? Another +5. Recruit agents form refugees camp after completing all the prerequisite quests? Yet another +5. Look how much is there just in Hinterlands!).
Also - hire people you judge instead of killing or imprisoning them.
Plus - even if you conscript mages and keep the Wardens, you can recoup the cost by keeping Florianne alive and turn her into an agent if when you judge her - and then, of course, by siding with Sentinels and letting Abelas go in Temple Of Mythal.

I think my favorite playthrough is the one where both Blackwall and Bull hated me. They disliked my Trevelyan very much. Vivienne loved me. Solas was meh. Dorian was...whatever. Cole was ok. But Blackwall and Bull was a bit funny mostly because I think Blackwall actually says like "I don't like you"I was like 'whatever, i don't like you either'. But my Trev did believe she was the Son of God Herald of Andraste and I think if given the option - would have believed she was Andraste reincarnated.

I did all of that. Every single thing on that list. Still didn't like my chances of keeping high approval from the loss of 40 approval.

I think with this game, I am okay with not having every companion like my Lavellan. I am really enjoying the role-playing aspect of this game, my only wish was that you were able to have some more nuanced conversations with the companions about some of the decisions they disagree with. I also would have liked the option to conscript rather than ally with the Wardens. My Lavallen was appalled by Adamant, but she did not want the Wardens exiled to Weishaupt were they could come up with something just as crazy or even crazier to end all Blights. She only allied with them so she could keep a close eye on them.

I'm with you on both counts. I was kind of impressed by just this, it made it feel realistic and balanced, without the disapprovals being massively detrimental, which I found to be great - it gave me the sense that everyone here is at least more or less a professional and we don't have to like each other to work well together. And the Grey Wardens, yeah, I wish there would have been a few more options there...

Conscript the people with super conscription powers. That would've been interesting.
Mine kept the Wardens as allies because of thinking like 'these are the people who stop Blights and they were wildly misled and used'.
Solas' reaction was unexpected. The animation on his sigh amuses me.
