The only remaining hope I cling to is that Jonathan Epp (not John Epler, though very similar names) was actually the cinematic designer for Solas. Epler did The Iron Bull. And more, I'm sure, that's just who I remember doing specific characters.

 

Grated, Epp may be gone or on the ME team now or just not animating Solas this time around, so Epler very well could be stabbing the final daggers into Solasmancer hearts.

I still love that they dropped hints to soften the blow for Bullmancers hoping to romance him with something other than humans or Qunari.

And then Epler went on a crusade.   

Reminds me of Weekes casually informing Laidlaw that he may have sorta written a Solas romance over the weekend.

Sometimes I get the feeling that Laidlaw is the resident Shepard.  (Though I just wish I could have given my Shepard a beard of that quality...)

So I finished The Witcher 3 a few days ago. I'd set myself up for the worst, most disastrous ending possible, going for all the repugnant choices, since I knew there was no chance I could pull it off after seeing the results of my natural instincts.

MASSIVE WITCHER 3 SPOILERS:

Apparently I shouldn't trust my instincts.   Ignoring the horrible, horrible fates of Roche and Thaler   and my being a treacherous ass, I quite enjoyed 'Chancellor' Sigy and Witcher Ciri. (Especially the part about poor Emyhr's fate. ) The epilogue faked me out.

I was very pleased. And glad to see that CDProjekt's comment about 'letting Geralt enjoy his retirement' was no joke, as he settled down with Triss in Kovir quite happily.

I hope that someday, there is a Witcher 4, with Geralt as the happily tipsy father figure you check in with for hilarious drunken shenanigans between chapters, as you play Ciri. 

Overall, probably one of the best games I've played. Definitely one of my favorites. I just wished that the epilogue slides would cover more, because there was so much.

And I missed not seeing Iorveth and Saaskia, of course.

Time for an imperial playthrough with best buddy Roche making it through. 

And Yennefer. I really liked Triss's romance, but I can't not romance Yennefer. 

I strongly concur with earlier sentiments about a certain elf in the Witcher 3 and his amazing amazingness.

OLD MAN: Well, you see Elgar'nan was tired of the Emerald Knights' union asking for pay raises and dental care, so when he decided to protect his cup of holy coffee, he hid it inside an alchemical bottle with mysterious smoke and hired a reject from Dark Souls to guard it for eternity. (He would have have Ghilly make some horrible monster, but Mythal tipped him off that both Ghilly and her monsters used caffeine as fuel...)

But in all seriousness, the sheer level of bizarre elven artwork in Ferelden is astonishing. Where are these Sylvaise-->Andraste statues I'm hearing about?

Seriously, it kind of reminds me of Solas' tarot card almost. You know the one with the 4 circles, with the big circle in the center. I read a fan theory somewhere that this 5 circle art design shows up a lot of places and might be a picture of the fade, depicting 4 different realms, or a crossroads, or something.

Maybe the black circle in the center is the void, and the red evil cup of coffee thing is red lyrium?

It's a shame they couldn't get the post-Halamshiral Bull scene to work (but given as Solas' contained clipping and that was made for one race+gender I hate to think of what that could've looked like).

 

Epler's hard work is why I'm riding the Bull with a Cadash.

This is the game of the year for me. Hands down. Granted it was a **** year but it's such a fantastic RPG.  I anticipate it being the "standard" by which all RPG's measure up down the road.  The blended the open world of Skyrim with really wonderful story-telling.  That baron quest - it was so dark but they managed to make me feel bad. Even though the baron is a garbage person in some ways. But he's clearly a "good" father.  Oh god that quest. 

 

Also, I loved the witches.  They way they were implemented was brilliant.  They were genuinely terrifying but also incredibly fascinating and I hope we see more of them in some way.  Like wandering through the swamp with the wind blowing through the trees and it creaking and knowing what they are. What they do.  I avoided the area after their main quest. 

 

Yennefer's romance is amazing.  I had no idea that she had never appeared or was really mentioned in the other games.  For coming straight from the books, her character was drawn really well. You have some backstory but it did feel that her and Geralt  had a significant and shared history. Also, best romance of any game.  Hands down. It was so sweet.  I was like OMG YOU TWO. And then I cried.

 

Also, Avallac'h. Best elf. Best person. BEST BEING AT MAKING MY HEART HURT.   The way he rolled his 'r's.  He's perfect. *swoons for days*

 

I really love Ciri. I hope the retirement thing is real and they change to Ciri as the main protagonist.  She was a blast to play as and I think there's a lot there they can explore with her. I also thought the character's easy acknowledgement of her sexuality was pretty awesome and chill. Like it wasn't a deal.  Also, it's kind of nice to see a main character in a game as pretty much canonically gay. Especially a woman.

Raven and Pia's romances in Rune Factory 3 are actually amazing.  A lot of depth and emotion to them. (I've never played a base Harvest Moon game but I'm a huge RF fan).

I played the first HM, so the series always has a soft spot in my heart -- but hurrah! Another Rune Factory fan! It's definitely a pretty fun series... :>

If you play on the PC it's worth checking out 3DNPCs/Interesting NPCs.  It has several new followers and marriage options.  Some are classified as 'super followers' meaning they actually react to various vanilla quests and have dialogue trees about them.  Two of my favourites are Rumarin (basically Awakening!Anders as an Altmer, and he's a bisexual marriage option) and Amalee (Kaylee from Firefly if she was a bard and a lesbian).

Summary: They say that at the end, we see our lives flash before our eyes. They say that death is painless and silent. On that day, I saw nothing but the smoke from the wood beneath my feet. I heard nothing but the Chant of Light and the thrilled shouts of the crowd all around me. I couldn't remember my life before this moment. I couldn't even imagine that anything existed outside the pain and torment of the present. In the end, death wasn't silent nor painless. Death was cruelty and agony. Death was my reflection in his eyes - the eyes of a beast. The eyes of a monster that I loved with all my soul.

After poking it another 500 times, dismantling it, swapping pieces around, and cutting scraps that may be moved to a new story eventually (or not). I just put it up to prevent more poking. I was astonished at the development of the whole Baron quest. They took a character that's a bloody check-off list of how to make me hate a person, (Wife-abuser, raging alcoholic, brutal soldier, oppressor of peasantry, has better looking clothes than I do) and made me like(?) him. In the end, I just pitied everyone involved. The ineffectual attempts at making up for his failures, things like taking in the girl and Ciri, sending a doll to Tamara...It's hard to flat-out hate someone who's utterly broken, and knows it, and hates it. 

I've heard theories that the Crones were supposed to be the Witcher's ogres combined with the old fairy-tale witches of the woods. Whatever they were, creepy as hell. The alderman of the village, the village notices about avoiding candy in the swamp, the children sent off to be fattened, everything on Bald Mountain...I feel like one of the themes of the Witcher has always been that humans can be the real monsters, but they decided to remind us all that monsters can be horrifying as well. And knowing that they've had Velen in their thrall like this for centuries just makes everything worse.

While I love Triss, Yennefer's romance had that amazing feeling that they'd actually been involved for twenty years as partners, friends, and 'partners'. Complete with built-up bitterness, misunderstandings, fond memories, and all of it under the shadow of the djinn wish. I loved that the relationship basically began anew once they were able to get rid of that doubt.

 Ciri's awesome.  But yeah, lovely to see no big deal being made of it.   Geralt certainly seems to find her crush on that waitress cute. I was half-expecting Geralt to introduce the waitress to my collection of Ursine gear as a warning.  Geralt and Ciri's relationship is probably my favorite video game one since Joel and Ellie.

No way, book Ciri ruined game Ciri on me, I hate the character now. She would make a terrible protagonist, every time you get in trouble you could just count on a unicorn turning up outta nowhere and saving the day.

It was at one of the conventions, I think, the one Illyria mentioned, where Karin Weekes and Mike Laidlaw were taking questions. Someone asked about how the Solas romance started, and Karin called Patrick and let him talk to the audience. He said he had the idea, brought it up to Laidlaw, and Laidlaw said, "Yeah, sure, but we don't have the resources for multiple races," and Weekes said something like, "No worries, I sort of wrote it over the weekend with female elves in mind."

I guess he got bored of writing Codex entries.

Would you by any chance have a link? I'd love to read the interview. I enjoy reading about what a writer was thinking when they write a certain character, but I don't have a Twitter or any such socially whatzits, so I usually end up out of the loop with them.

Given the survey implication that we'll be fighting the Qunari directly (though I have to wonder how they plan to handle an allied Inquisitor) it does seem like there's a decent chance the emotional breakdown is Bull's.  I mean, he can barely handle being pseudo Tal'Vashoth.  

 

It's one thing for him to sacrifice a single dreadnaught for the Chargers.  I imagine it'll be something entirely different for the Inquisitor to ask him to directly take up arms against his people.
