Mine didn't either. I liked that option better tbh. I doubt my Lavellan would throw away all connection to her clan. Especially since Josie's option killed them XD.

I'm unsure. If it'll just turn into a trolling-cole-demon-monster-hate-him thread, then I';d rather not raise my blood-pressure by starting it. Hmmm what to do, what to do. I'll see if I can find some cute Cole gif's, pics and stories etc so that we have something to start with.
The last post in the Cole thread was on the 9th of April, so it's probably worth setting up a new thread rather than necro-ing his old one. I wouldn't mind doing it if you're unsure about starting it.

Mine removed hers. Nothing like adding more drama to the mix xD
One of reasons of it is - as I've said in one of different threads - is her way of offering Solas a gift of her ultimate trust to him.
Plus, from her point of view, misguided religious practices and traditions are not a good thing to be connecting people anyway.

Yeah, my first Lavellan got her clanned killed on my initial playthrough. I had a real moment of struggling with myself over loading up my first save to fix it, but stuck to my rule of "no backsies on first playthrough". Which is friggin tough when your clueless. I made some mucho mistakes.

Well, mine thought she would eventually share this knowledge with her clan, and thought she wouldn't be alone, of course.
She considered it a new beginning in some ways, given as an intimate gift.
My mage believes in reinterpretation, meanings changing over time, something new can be made from the past, etc. Her clan will be killed so it's her last tie to that old life.

I played JOH with Solas but without the vallaslin.
Ahh, I don't like Solas in my party after break up, it makes me sad and I can't think of a good way to headcanon to fit my Lavellan's character (because she acts like he doesn't after all that happened).
Maker, you vallaslin keepers, I can't even imagine how mortifying it would be to have it removed (a link to your cultural heritage) and then the person that should of been your pillar of support during this transition to have just broken your heart :'(.
I imagine this scenario:

I was about to say the same thing about my mage. Then I remembered my Lavellan mage is a male so he won't have that option to choose whether to remove it or not. Ooops! My mage won't remove hers. My canon does, however.
I should go to bed now...

I'm on board and as long as there are some people that actually care about Cole on the thread what's it matter if Cole haters come in? If they're being respectful, we respectfully rebuke them, if they're being nasty, we ignore them ![]()

I restarted the thread, but I have a short fuse when it comes to Cole hatred. It's like the people who have this ridiculous hatred of Elves or Mages as a whole. I just can't understand why you could hate a group or individual for something that they have no control over, something they were born with and that is inherently THEM. Hate a person for what they chose, fine, just not for what they are.

Maybe personally I'm just really unsentimental towards religious symbols and their either emotional and cultural significance after being raised in environment that puts waaaay too much emphasis on them, while ignoring everything else.
Reinterpretation can also only go so far - we've reinterpreted many symbols in our culture as well, but I don't think anyone will be reinterpreting stuff like Nazi flag anytime soon (even though Nazi themselves stole swastika from Hindu religion - and did irreparable damage to it).
And vallaslin is kinda a symbol of not just slavery, but double slavery - first, everybody has to worship a given god (and considering the awful stuff we learn about Falon'Din in TOM, it might be that not all of it was voluntary) and then they force their slaves to wear signs of that worship, which is... problematic, to say the least >.>'
In any case, being that my main mage elf has been a skeptic from the start and because she's already been doing things that makes her suspicious in eyes of the Dalish no matter if she was covered in vallaslin from head to toe, she went with the removal.

My canon feels a little torn about her upbringing to small degrees and the choices made for her (she's emotionally inclined, but given a certain role, she's bisexual and spent years with her first love but there was subtle resentment because no bio children could ever come of same sex relationships and the Dalish pride and duty make for subtle conflict there, she's also curious and maybe slightly too forward), but open-minded. Reinterpreting something as your examples show, can have its own set of problems, but for some it might make sense. I'm playing my mage as more pragmatic and confident in her Dalish upbringing.

Mine was predominantly tolerated (in her already fairly open-minded clan, relatively speaking) predominantly because she uses her charm and wit to patch things up and get things done - but she still keeps wondering whether her Keeper sent her on Conclave either to spy or just to get rid of her... or learn her lesson I suppose ![]()
As for confidence in Dalish upbringing... eh, it's not that she wants to tear all the society down or is too vocal about it, she tries to see value in it - it's just that she has a feeling that it's all very small-minded and stews in its own sauce, thinking of greatness of the past, glorifying it, instead of learning how things really were, while moving things forward. Hence her personal reason to 'get out there' and learn stuff in the first place.
.... Ha, I can imagine her having a small stash of things from world 'out there' kinda like Disney's Ariel or Belle and singing "I want moooore" - and heavens opening and singing back "careful what you wish fooooor" ;D

No mine don't either. It might have mattered more if she knew it was one of her gods telling her about vallaslin but someone, even her lover, telling her what they used to be used for wasn't enough to throw away something so central to dalish culture. Particularly when that person has made no secret of his disdain for her people.

I really liked how you could have her react with anger to the whole thing, actually. Literally call bullshit.
I mean I removed the vallaslin myself because I'm apparently going for the maximum amount of tragedy possible and I like the notion of my Lavellan immediately regretting that decision. But I love that if you want to, you can make Solas react like any panicked boyfriend: "Gah, no, forget I said anything!! You're perfect!!!!"

Yes! My Lavellan was always very interested in the world outside of her clan too. She loves to learn everything she can about other cultures and learn truths rather than speculate so she asks a ton of questions, which is what caught the attention of a certain adorable freckled bald elf.
I like to think that, as first of her clan, she was trying to nudge them into taking more interest in other cultures and that's the reason she was sent to the conclave. "Alright then, we'll take more interest. You're going to spy on the shems." But maybe her words resonated with her clan since they stayed in Wycome to help the city elves. :/ hmm.
Also, my fiance ordered the Dragon Age tea sampler for me from Adagio for my birthday~!
I'm really looking forward to the Solas one! *squee* Sorry. I am really excited about this. I've heard good things.

Question is whether she'd pick for a lover someone who has only disdain for her people in the first place. I mean, we're not talking small things like difference in tastes or preferences, but something that is potentially too big of an issue to form a relationship (even friendship) to begin with.
Second - it's amusing that when Lavellan laments that out of all things they could preserve the Dalish picked something that makes them no better than Tevinter, it's Solas who tells her that she's a tad too harsh ;D

I wouldn't put anything past the Orlesians.
They changed Dirthavaren to the Exalted Plains. I also hesitate to attribute the retention of the name Gwaren to the Orlesians, given it's in Ferelden.
I know that Gwaren is in Ferelden, was just using it as an example of how certain places haven't changed their names despite being occupied by a new power once the previous inhabitants either abandoned it, died out, or were conquered.
Should have been clearer before (I had thought to say about Ferelden's taking over, but erased it before posting), mea culpa. ![]()

I'm getting the angst from the other direction his "you're perfect" is quickly proven to be a lie because one more look at Lavllan's face and he's like 'nope, I'm out'.

In different circumstances, where she's not surrounded by humans and quietly terrified, she wouldn't have had much to do with him once he shared his opinion about modern elves. My girl is easy going but no matter how interesting the person once they spit out that kind of hate she's done with them. She'll fell for him despite her better judgement and well look at how it ended.

You know, the great thing about the whole keeping the vallaslin or not is the fact that Solas respects the decision Lavellan makes either way. My Lavellan has them removed, but both sides reason are all good. And it is so awesome that Solas respects both.
I imagine the few days leading up to Lavellan coming back to Skyhold being a bit odd for everyone though. I can see Cole getting rid of all the mirrors and individuals such as hairstyling Cullen getting very irritated. Then everyone getting it when they see Lavellan show up.
Oh, the sadz!!!! The sadz....feelz.....DLC please.....
