Aaah! Missed you and your art! Your art is looking very beautiful (as always.)

I have to admit, I shall be forever baffled by Solas' eye design. They gave him droopy eyes >_>, which also aren't that big or wide-open - and they're made look even smaller by really large irises.... yet, they manage to offset that by making the eyes really deep-set and gave him a peculiar lower lid shape, plus a pair of low, straight brows.

 

(artist/designer talk here, sorry folks, I'm in such mood today...)

I actually rather like Solas' eyes. I mean, honestly, they do look older and tired....both of which fit him quite well, lol. The hooded eye look makes him look like he's always a little sleepy.....which I find pretty endearing.

 

The brows are an interesting choice and in fact, a weird thing about Solas' face is that it actually displays several traits that are often given to....I hate to use the word....villain type characters. But on Solas, to me it just has this very tired high elf look.

Agreed, it's and interesting and not often encountered choice that the designers made. I like the uniqueness of it! Droopy deep set eyes FTW!

 

Definitely unique - and it's not like have anything against that :)They certainly make look Solas like...well, himself!, and one thing that I appreciate is people with unique facial structures.

I think this is the reason why they gave him droopy eyes in the first place - to kinda neutralize the sharpness of his features and make his face and expressions (especially smiling or looking sad) look a tad softer.

 

(though the prominent curve near the tear duct on lower lid makes him look like he's always focused - but it helps to emphasize the smile as well, giving him an ever-so-slight squint when he does.... not that people complained about that, from what I've seen ;D)

I want to share something with you guys but I can't get photo linking to work on my phone!! Such sad. But on topic: I noticed Solas has down turned eyes and freckles... Which I laugh at because skin spots and droopy eyes are also characteristic of old people. Haha. So old.

I do adore his cheekbones and angled features. He has small eyes for an elf, doesn't he? Did Abelas as well?

I noticed that uploading a smaller resolution works for me in fixing the blurriness of the image, maybe try that?

He has the ability to look very sleepy and a bit goofy to also very focused.

 

In the first scene when we meet him or in the Fade Haven scene he looks so goofy and infatuated. And adorable.

 

His eyes didn't sit right with me at first before the game came out and we just had art, because they seemed too small,  But he's so sharp and angular that it's true, the eyes soften him a bit. He also tends to act with more confident body language as the game progresses.

I think it's kind of just the DAI elf designs. I mean, I was making Fenris mad playing DA2 again last night and it's pretty stark..

 

True, though I don't think it's as prominent. When I design, I usually go for the opposite though and fortunately DAI elves have an option to push the angle of the eye in the other direction, hence mine has her pwetty, bright eyes as undroopy as you can get

 

 

I have a sort of thing for freckles. I think they are adorable on others and wish mine were more visible

 

I don't have freckles - I have lots and lots of moles though (go away, sun! I don't like you!). And I shall forever associate faint freckles with my sister's mom, who always looks younger than she actually is.

All elves do - Solas as well, but his eyes are gray and darker, hence Abelas' light yellow ones (especially flashing from under his hood) might look bigger.

I really hope they bring him back in the future. Companion in DA4, yes please.

Mm, depends. Freckles come and go with sun exposure but the other type which is a sort of age spot (had to google it: lentigines) is always there and can be faint or strong, small or big. Or at least my mom's dermatologist told her so. So for instance, my grandma had a lot of these but they were freckle size.

Not saying Solas' are definitively age spots. But he sure is old, and needs poked fun at once in a while

If we meet more ancient elves I wonder if they will join the droopy eye club, too? I don't mind it!

And for someone asking about Tumblr images being fuzzy: best to either work out how to get 'high res' enabled (I know some themes are hi-res, but I think you can edit code and do it yourself)... or upload in dimensions to fit the width of tumblr blog -- only it'd have to be 'small' this way

There were characters in the previous games (DAO and Awakening) like Leliana and Anders who made appearances on DA2 even if you killed them so maaaaybe there's hope for Abelas to come back in DA4?

 

Unless of course Bioware is going to avoid doing things like that again.
