I just got that line today with Blackwall, about children not learning unless you shout at them, and I think he was being a bit sarcastic and cheeky with Blackwall about his teaching practices. I doubt that he actually thinks this is a valid teaching style himself. ^.^
Thought the same - I mean, it's a kinda odd comment for him IF he's not being at least a bit cheeky or sarcastic, considering that he's usually pretty calm and patient when he explains something to people (notable example being accepting Cole in Skyhold or when he lectures Sera about what to do with Red Jennies) and generally seems to really like when people ask him questions.
He does say it took him years to learn some things, the rift mage spells, for example. He also says it takes critical thinking to extract the grains of truth from any dream or memory in the fade, so it's not like the knowledge is there, ready-made for him. It could be dangerous, traveling to ancient ruins, risking possession by demons, sleeping near giant spiders... All in all, it seems research in the fade can be just as difficult and time consuming as in real life. (Edit: it also involves living like a hobo. Just like in real life. )
Solas does mention that sense and logic needs to be applied while extracting truth, but its no different to us trying to extract truth from evidence available to us. He even cited human history books as an example, and in another banter with Cassandra he says - and it's hard to not agree with him - that even experiences or memories of first-person witnesses or our own aren't reliable, due to their subjectivity.
Plus, even today, extracting knowledge or learning stuff may not necessarily be a 100% safe endeavor - all those archaeological/scientific expeditions to dangerous or unstable regions or places (we now even consider sending volunteers on a one-way trip on Mars), fighting to get to documents or books locked in restricted archives, being vulnerable to attacks from people who are very allergic to trying to change their understanding of history or the world... people were burned and tortured for making historical or scientific discoveries, after all.
Still, even if extracting memories is not *as* easy task as other means, how fantastic it would still be? To have a vault of (even imperfect) data to be examined when we need it... I mean, don't we love Internet for being somewhat similar?![]()
