The Solas card you shared -- makes me so sad my DA:I deck had NO SOLAS IN IT. Then again some of the art looks different in general so I think maybe the deck used old(er) files? IDK. :(

No Solas? That's a bummer. D:

Hmmm, I'm not too familiar with the DA:I tarot card decks, but from what I remember, there was a deck that used artwork that was different from what we saw in the game (like the Dalish/Lavellan tarot cards).

That Solas comic you guys shared earlier... so good. I wasn't planning on making my own NSFW, but seeing that stuff makes me want to try. Maybe once it's all said and done I'll do a 'special edition', rofl!

Do it! Hehehe!

*ahem* Though seriously, nanananananablr's works makes me want to try my hand on a short NSFW comic as well.

EDIT: I've never really drawn my own comics before so this should be an interesting challenge.

Seriously the both of you should...

Spoiler

And I too like nanananananablr's comics.

Yeah -- the card deck's Dalish/Lavellan is dark haired, has fewer branches/lacks the decorative flair of spots and whatnot. And the male Dalish is not holding his bow the same way, and wearing a shirt (of all things!)

One of my favorite banter in DAI

I find it fascinating because of how Solas is playing. There is a lot of foreshadowing. For example, he sacrifices his Queen for a strategic purpose. In game, he kills Flemeth / Mythal in order to absorb her power.

There is also the fact that he used a Pawn to great effect and won the game, albeit at a cost. Am I the only one who looks at the Pawn and think of it as the Inquisitor ? I mean, before the destruction of the Conclave, the Inquisitor is, for the most part, a nobody.

I would not be surprised to see the Inquisitor taking on the role of the Pawn to checkmate the King in the Wolf Hunt DLC.

Love this banter and what it reveals about Solas. I don't know if individual pieces symbolize specific characters in the game. Since it copies the Immortal Game, they didn't have the freedom to ascribe symbolism to each particular piece and move. (But maybe it's the game that inspired them. Or it fits what will happen in the plot especially well.) But still, it reveals another side of Solas: How he's capable of bold, shocking, risky moves, making you think he's worked himself into a corner, but that's when he pulls of a comeback with next to nothing. Did he plan the game to go like this from the beginning or did IB really have him cornered?

This thread (and my current Lavellan) playthrough makes me yearn to write a NSFW fanfic, but it would be so out of character for Solas T.T .

Anyone else thinks we never got this particular scene we all were waiting for, because Solas fears that if he let Lavellan get that close, he wouldn't be able to walk away?

Probably this is one of the reasons he breaks up with her after that intense scene after the well, because he noticed how close he was to crossing this line. Another thing in that scene I noticed is that he nearly tells Lavellan everything and you can really see (and hear) the moment when he suddenly loses courage and backs out with the Vallaslin. This could be another reason, why he ultimately breaks up with her after that scene, because he feels too ashamed to confess to her what he has done and  this shame even deepens when he notices he isn't brave enough to tell her the truth. The old "I-don't-deserve-her" bullshit

I mostly find similarities between this chess match and tale of Fen'Harel and Slow Arrow - how he slayed the beast when nobody saw it coming. I think it MAY indicate that this is what he's planning (be it from the start or as emergency plan), but I think it shows his signature strategy or way of getting out of trouble.

Varies by personal interpretation, I think.  In my headcanon they slept together, but that's because I think physical intimacy is less of a hurdle for Solas than emotional intimacy.  Also because I like smut :D

You are certainly right about different opinions in this matter :D I just can't imagine it, because he seems so overwhelmed after their first kiss. The physical intimacy must be something rare for him, as he can have the emotional intimacy with his spirit friends too. Also I know it works for me like that and I found myself amazed again and again how similar Solas acts to how I would in his situation, how he talk in ways I found myself talking to friends etc... Probably that's why I can't romance anyone else in that game^^.

I am curious: Does anyone know what happens if you do the well of sorrows but never talk to Solas again? Does that let you finish the game still in romance with him?

That's how I personally see it too, he seems so conflicted just by one kiss. I really appreciate, though, that Patrick Weekes said that their level of intimacy is up to our headcanon; I do like to imagine that they do it sometimes  :P

After hundreds of years alone I assume it's hard not to be overwhelmed ;) Still, he seems (dunno, just my personal observation) to be overwhelmed only in a sense that he was so attracted to her, that he couldn't stop from throwing himself at her and sweeping her off her feet, and only seemed to tear away from her after reminding himself that they shouldn't (for whatever reason), rather than in any way that suggests he's overwhelmed by kiss itself or lack of experience in these matters.

In any case, IMO, it's hard to achieve same type of emotional intimacy with spirits as a person can with another 'real' person. Solas mentions from time to time just how lonely he was for a very long time, which seems to confirm that it's indeed different - majority of spirits aren't as complex, personality-wise. Only more powerful spirits - like a very old spirit of Wisdom whom Solas befriended or Cole - gain enough of sentience and complexity to develop personality and capability to grow, mentally and emotionally - and even then, they differ in their way of thinking compared to Thedosians (Cole gives us great insight into this).

Therefore, while Solas has definitely befriended a lot of spirits and treats them with respect, it's likely very rare for him to find a - nomen omen - 'kindred spirit' or a soulmate, with whom he can share a deep emotional bond. It's possibly even rarer than - dunno, maybe in the past, long before his slumber - finding moment's respite in arms of attractive elves... I mean, SOMETHING has to explain that smoothness of his >.>'

I am curious: Does anyone know what happens if you do the well of sorrows but never talk to Solas again? Does that let you finish the game still in romance with him?

I'm too much of an OCDish completionist to even try, but considering that the last romance scene is necessary for Solas and Lavellan lock their relationship (ironically!) and his tarot card to change for a romanced one, it may be that the game won't count the romance as finished or continuing - I don't think I'd recommend trying that, especially IF we get the DLC with conclusion for romance(s), because I don't think the game would recognize it.

There are some Solas - related Cards in the Tarot set which came with the Inquisitors edition. I have a picture, but I can't figure out how to post it here. Ironically he is the Hierophant, the Tower and the Hermit which (I don't remember precisely) are about something like the need to change and making up for a mistake

I think what spirits cannot give Solas is a sense of belonging. He seems to form deep emotional bonds with some spirits like Wisdom and Cole, but they can't fill the void at the center of his being, which I think has to do with longing for the past. His loneliness is not so much for lack of people or beings he could interract with, but ones he can identify with. His land, his people, his way of life, are almost entirely gone and he seems to be one of few survivors. I think it's an important point that during the balcony scene he almost slips to tell Inky not just that he respect their wisdom and actions, but that they remind him so much of ancient Elvhenan, and this is the scene that starts the romance or friendship with Solas. In party banter he also tells Blackwall, "It is calming to see something familiar in another." I think he is torn between desperately trying to find something in common with another, salvage some sense of belonging to comfort him, and focusing on all that has been lost.

This also relates to his fear of dying alone. I see it interpreted literally in a lot of art and fics, that he literally does not to be alone while he is dying. Those are all heart-wrenching creative works that I love, but I think his fear is more about dying with no community, friends, or loved ones, and what that means. One of the ways we can deal with mortality is through sharing with others, and many people find comfort when dying in the thought that shared experiences, the relationships they formed, and memories of the impact they had on others will remain after their death. Solas doens't have that. Anyone he might've loved is gone. His community is gone. His legacy has been warped into the tales of Fen'Harel. Even the Inquisition will remember him as the mask of the quiet elven apostate. In a banter he tells Varric, "How can you be happy surrendering, knowing it will all end with you?" I think this is at the heart of his pain of being alone and his fear of dying alone. If he dies, it's not just him that is lost, it is all lost.

I don't think we should be preparing ourselves for any comments about the content from DLC outside of DLC (maybe outside of 'comments' inside some new War Table missions). It was like that for JoH, I assume it will be like this for Descent.
