Just finished Descent. MASSIVE POST SORRY-NOT-SORRY.
Playing DA:I after spending the last month pretty much only playing ME makes me remember how ghastly DA:I's combat system is. Clunky PC controls (urgh, holding 'r'), limited tactics, tactical cam where I can't see anything, no option to 'select whole party and make them move here to dodge incoming attack', enemies with lots of health where you just grind them to death. No wonder I never completed my second playthrough, it's soooo baaaaddd uuuugggghhh ![]()
[snip]
Am I the only one who doesn't find the lore dump... well, a lore dump?
Spoiler
I liked JoH much more and found the lore there much more interesting (well, it's true that I wanted to learn more about the Avvar so bad)
No, I agree. I liked JoH more because you get to explore lots of different areas and bits and pieces. I liked the fact that you were able to explore another settlement and get a feel for what Avaar culture was like, both in legend and in person, rather than like the rest of the game, where it was just pretty, but mostly empty space with a handful enemies, resources, and collectibles (with the occasional cool ruin, of course).
This DLC had a "big reveal", but beyond that, the lore was pretty thin.
It's quite possible that what Solas is up to ties in to what else is going on, and we'll be able to wrap up some of the threads and leave the major ones for DA4.
But as for the Inquisitor disappearing - please no. I'm so tired of magical disappearing protagonist syndrome. Move the game to Tevinter or something, tell our new protagonist that the Inquisitor is busy doing some other stuff - if final DLC doesn't have us disbanding the Inquisition entirely or something - and not more bull**** where this important powerful person is suddenly gone. They don't have to do more than reference what our last characters are doing. If the next part of the story can be told by a new character, that's reason enough for it to not be the last one and people can shut up about it. Trying to make our old characters relevant through DAI was a disaster. Not because BioWare really screwed them up, but because it was just not necessary. As long as they wrap up some of the more outstanding plots and answer a few of the questions in DLC with the Inquisitor, I'll be glad to leave them behind and move on to a new person and know that Lavellan is busy Doing Stuff. It's not a hard concept.
Agreed! I also think given the size of the Inquisition and the fact that it's basically turned into a new political power, I reckon our quizzy will likely be busy running rings about politicians and it'll be quite easy to say 'she's still there, but she's got her own problems'. It'll beeven easier if we move to Tevinter - Inquisition presence north of the border, given the fervent southern Andranstianism of the organisation, could potentially be viewed as a potential attack. Especially if you sided with the Templars.
I hope we move onto something more small-scale/underground which the Inquisition can't deal with because of a) geography, and
wouldn't be politically wise of them.
That's my main problem with the newest DLC. They're ADDING more plots instead of wrapping things up
YEP THIS.
You know, I'm still hoping for a DLC in Val-Royeaux. Not the skeleton city that we got shown, but a fully fleshed out map with different districts, layers, rich areas and poor areas, slums, sewers, docks, etc. I'd like to fight in dark alleys or crowded marketplaces where you need to avoid dragging innocent people into the fray if you can. I kind of want to explore Orlais a little more before we leave it behind forever.

To be honest, I also enjoyed JoH more than The Descent. And it's not because I dislike dwarves or the deep roads (because I do like them), it's just that I felt the content was lacking in The Descent. It took me 6 hours to complete TD whereas it took me 12-16 hours for JOH. I know BW/EA has to make money and I would like to support them in continuing with the future of DA, but $15 for 6 hrs of gameplay? I don't know...

Personally, I enjoyed both - for different reasons, as those are very different DLCs. I don't find the combat as jarring as some, so I didn't find the crawl tedious - in fact, I quite liked the increased and tougher feel of enemies; since I played with characters and teams that are pretty much fully specced and clad in best gear in the game, so at least cutting through darkspawn wasn't laughably simple, even on Nightmare xD
I also did a 'tighter' run of both JoH and doing a second run on Descent and I find that they both take about the same time, once I roughly know what to do. JoH may appear bigger, simply because there's more free roaming compared to more linear/labyrinthian as well as abandoned feel of Descent (in both cases however I highly appreciate the vertical, layered feeling of both areas, with all the lovable nooks and crannies to explore)
I also don't think there's less lore than in JoH, it's simply approached differently. Since there's less NPCs we can hear or talk stuff about, aside from our temporary dwarf companions, Descent attempts to convey some stuff through visual storytelling and clues peppered throughout. If I were you, I'd pay more attention to texts that appear when we open Segrummar door, the shrine where we find Arcane Horror and notes we find from dwarves from Cal'dahash.
I also don't think JoH left me with less unanswered questions or didn't muddle things as much with what it revealed.
I mean... aside from other questions I have, WHAT ABOUT THAT HUMONGOUS TREE sprouting from right where we find Hakkon!?
(and what about that GIGANTIC crater right next to it, where we see all of its gigantic roots!?)
(we find humongous tree - with its giant roots spread all throughout Arbor Wilds - growing directly from Temple Of Mytal as well)

^Pretty much all this. Also, Val Royeaux...
The concept art looked so great, with this gilded city and its seedy underbelly. I wanted to see the grand cathedral and I ESPECIALLY wanted to see the Val Royeaux alienage, which is supposed to be the biggest alienage in thedas.
I noticed that too.

After playing the new DLC and reading the new info, I can't be the only one who thought
I'm enjoying the Descent but like others said have already, more party interaction would have been nice. There were several moments where you made camp in the tunnels, that would have been a perfect time to implement it. Even if you were just commenting on what you've seen so far.

There's some theorizing on that tree over here, about halfway through the post. I'm not sure if I'm convinced, but it's an interesting possibility...
The obvious reference to Norse mythology and tree symbolism - I agree. In fact, I think so far I'd treat this whole thing as more symbolic, than literal.
But I don't buy the "Tree of Peace" thing though, simply because (in case of Skyhold's prop) it was supposed to thoroughly symbolic - or rather, ironic, considering that the 'Tree of Peace' now serves as WAR table ;P (add to that the fact that the tree War Table had been made of is nowhere near as big, plus its base is built from its roots, which is a thing of FB tree that actually survived and let it grow back)
And while I think there might be something to say about Mythal being a 'bridge' of some sort, or someone who worked to create the world as thedosians know it, I don't think the trees were dedicated specifically to her. I think this is an elf thing - like, in general. There are more mentions of trees (Andruil had a "Way Of Three Trees") and we see in Emerald Graves that elves can indeed grow trees of enormous sizes (even if they're not as enormous as they were in ancient times), including the giant, ominous dead tree we find next to dragons' lair.
I wouldn't be surprised if every important location had such tree - or at least, that every deity had a tree dedicated to them... who knows, maybe even more? It could also explain what Solas meant by describing Arlathan as "crystal spires twining through the branches, palaces floating in the sky" - elves basically lived in/around those giant trees!
The fact that the Frostback Basin tree has been cut, yet managed to grow back is definitely interesting - aside from obvious question as to what made it grow back, question as to why it was cut is prooooobably (?) easier to speculate about. Personally, I think it may have had something to do with either fall of Elvhen empire or a fall of the particular deity/whatever that resided in FB a long time ago (and I don't necessarily think it might've belonged to any known elvhen god). We know that before people from Tevinter built Razikale's temple/shrine, there was a cave that Avvar considered sacred.
Anyway... wanna hear my wacky theory? (more like half-hypothesis, because it isn't really refined):

Finally got the last mug and last three gears, so I am officially done with Descent. Now the long wait for the next DLC... ![]()
And for those wondering if/how they would have shards in the Deep Roads... gears. They're ******* gears. Some of which no person in their right mind would ever find because they are located in truly absurd places. When they have to put supply caches nearby, and not because of combat, that tells you something.

Personally... I don't mind. Really! In fact, the more outrageous place the better. I like this kind of puzzles, where the terrain itself becomes the puzzle, and I have to wonder how to get that thing - or that I have to look into every nook and cranny to find these ![]()

Yeah I agree, I enjoyed it more than JoH, but that's not saying much lol.
Not worth 12 quid imo.
I'm so glad you guys post your opinions because this is what I wanted to read, whether good or bad. I haven't even bought JoH yet or TD. I'm waiting for the big one to be released and I know I'll eventually buy all of the dlc but for now I can spend my money (very tight budget living paycheck to paycheck) on food and not worry about playing these dlc immediately because it doesn't have the Solas goods. Thanks guys! Keep your opinions coming and share any relevant Solas bits. We lurkers appreciate it!

Sorry that you are in that situation... at least be assured that you are not missing any super quality content, DLCs until now are nice but you can wait to get them (I wish I had) In fact that's what I'll do with the next DLC, I'll wait to hear what people make of it.
Re: the content presentation, to me it wasn't different, it was lacking. If I'm playing a RPG, I want to have conversations and meaningful interactions with characters, not walk for minutes in silence until I stumble upon an old letter (or not) Codexes are nice for additional info and visual clues for theorycrafting, but not to convey the bulk of what is being told. I find what they did a way of making content cheaper and faster, not to tell things in a different way (sorry if I sound bitter, I was very excited to play the DLC, bought it as soon as it showed up in the PS4 store, and ended up very disappointed)

They have been leaning towards using Codex's to tell the story more in Inquisition. Take for example, the killing of Tranquil to make the Ocularium (sp?). That was revealed behind a locked door via a codex. Going by the number of skulls out and about and in that room, hundreds of Tranquil must have been mass slaughtered. I feel that this reveal was done very little justice by being squirreled away in a corner. Think about how much more compelling/horrifying it would have been to have found out instead by catching some Venatori during the act and saving the Tranquil about to be sacrificed. Then him telling you about what they've been doing and leading you to a place where other Tranquil are being held like pigs for the slaughter. Then deciding what their fate will be.
That's what's really missing. In DAO and DA2 this would have been a proper quest, raising interesting points about the treatment of Tranquil and the merits of reversal. Instead it's a bit of a nothing.
