Just a thought, but maybe Solas is more used to Fade spirits than people?

Outside of a few exceptions demons and spirits all have a single major facet that defines them. Anger with Rage Demons, laziness with Sloth Demons, etc. They exist as multiple entities and have different personalities but all act roughly the same.

People are more complicated than that. An Avvar is different from a Dalish Elf, is different from a Dwarf, even if they're all from Ferelden. Solas might not immediately pick up on that.

EDIT: But really it sounded like he was mouthing off more than foot in mouth but that's just my opinion...

Sounds like he was just making an observation and accidentally offended someone by using a general term. If what manabloom posted was all that was said, it just sounds like a miscommunication. To me, it seems obvious Solas meant 'Fereldens' as a term describing people living in a geographical area not as formal citizens of the country known as Ferelden (how Sky Watcher perceived it).

I'm stupidly happy to be again in Ferelden...I know is a little idiotic, but the feeling is like going back home...everything about DA, expecially for those that started with DAO, Ferelden is home. 

 

Now I think the first companions we will have will be Cassandra, Varric and Solas. Like in the first images/video about DAI.

Yeah, now that I actually heard the tone in which he said it, I think that too. It sounded an impassive observation. Apparently the Avvar was talking about the Lady Of the Skies (according to Cameron's comments, anyway; I couldn't actually hear any of that) and Solas seems to be like, "Oh. That's different. Neat how I can hear about the Creators, the Stone, the Maker, (insert whatever the Chasind believe in here because I forget oops), and now this Goddess while still being in the same country," without considering that the term Fereldens refers to the citizens of the country Ferelden who are also the modern descendants of the old Alamarri tribes that the Avvar did and still do not like. So yeah.

 

I think Dr. Doctor's idea about Solas being more used to spirits and demons and their rather static, one-dimensional ways makes sense, both in general (considering how he's lived) but also in application to this interaction as well.

 

I still think the idea of him accidentally offending people by looking at things in a purely factual manner without considering how a mortal being's feelings might alter how they hear it is adorable, though. 

 

edit @Felya: I know! I'm right there with you. I loved Ferelden; I despised Kirkwall. And I loathe Orlais without ever having gone there.

While I really want to see a lot of other places like Nevarra and the Anderfels, if they're not going to be in Inquisition then I'm so happy that at least a lot of things will be in Ferelden. I started out as one, and I will always be one at heart, ahah.

I'm glad we are going back to fereldan...even though I got a taste of how Orlesians are I still can't wait to go there to see what it's like. Alright so maybe he isn't mouthing off exactly he just offends people without knowing it lol...still that's kinda cute.

I kind of get the idea that years of living as a Fade-wandering hermit might have made him wise in terms of lore but he probably lacks knowledge of etiquette and the various social mores most people have. He's blunt, and perhaps unintentionally insulting. Kind of like Merrill but without the self-consciousness.

Dear Maker, it's going to be hilarious to hear his banter with Dorian who's always snarky and sarcastic.
