Guys, I have a question. I've been replaying In your Heart shall Burn last night and wondered something. Cory and his fellow magister who breached the fade to reach the Golden City were priest of the OId Gods. Now, we're told the Golden City is the seat of the Maker, but none of the Magisters believed in the Maker, did they? They're not even from the same religion. Or, did the belief in the Maker run alongside that of the Old Gods? If not, what did Cory and al. hope to find int he Golden City? The Old Gods themselves?

Well it's a couple of tricky questions because the Bio writers are trying to dance around the Golden City and its mysteries.

It's getting a bit annoying because you get some retcon.

The magisters didn't believe in the Maker , there were rumors of a "Creator" god and some cult here and there but nothing more.

Now with Tevinter building its empire on dead elves culture , "Creator" could have been well...the elven Creators.

There really isn't much about the Old God religion , no text , nothing.

It seems people dreamt and saw them ,and were just offering sacrifices and prayers and in exchange they got some stuff.

About the Golden City there is talk of the elven Gods , the Maker , and the Old Gods being there.

Corypheus being disappointed it was empty (I mean having a huge crisis of faith) probably thought Dumat and co were waiting for him there.

Now I'll get to the retcon part :

In Legacy , Corypheus says Dumat send them there , and they were promised the Golden Light , the power of the Gods themselves. He yells he "seeks the Light".

Now in DAI , Cory never says I think somebody tricked me , and a codex says he just went there because the Gods were silent and he was looking for them.No more Power of the Gods...just silent Gods.

He also doesn't speak about the " Light" anymore .

There is a Dissonant Canticle called Canticle of Silence, in which described the reasoning behind the magisters' actions.

(2) The High Priest, Conductor of the Choir of Silence [Corypheus], ruled

Above all the Dreamers of the Imperium. Wisest

And most powerful of Magisters Sidereal.

In his dreams, he alone heard the voice of Silence [Dumat].

(3) "Open the gates.

To my Golden City you must sojourn.

At the foot of my throne, I shall anoint you,

Most favored of my disciples,

And I shall raise you up to godhood

That all mortals shall know your glory"

It's forbidden to read it because in Silence 3 there is a description of how the Maker perceived the events (which the Chantry is against) as well as the mention of the Old Gods being the children of the Maker.

So yeah, they were driven to breach the Fade by the whispers of (supposedly) the Old Gods and were promised godhood.

Now I'll get to the retcon part :

In Legacy , Corypheus says Dumat send them there , and they were promised the Golden Light , the power of the Gods themselves. He yells he "seeks the Light".

What codex? This

This codex speaks of the them acknowledging the Maker and wanting to usurp His throne, but I see no mention of the fact the gods were silent, can you find the codex? I'm intrigued.

The codex is taken from a in-world book called "Questioning the Chant" so it's not 100% reliable anyhow XD

*waves at Alyka, Caddius, and DustyTulip* Hi guys! :D

Well, there's KeeperLavellan's Apotheosis, which just ended a few weeks ago. I haven't finished reading it though because, holy crap, 90 chapters!!! xD (I've only gotten to around chapter 21.)

Thank you, Sunny! (I might be on chapter 27 already...)

Lol, the first time I got to it, I was in lab:

**lifting eyes from phone, stealthily looking around** Maybe I can read a little more?  **looking back at phone for a few seconds, then putting it down, hands shaking** Nope, I really can't.

Haha THAT and also this logic 'well, I took a short lunch, I can read one more chapter, it will only take me a few minutes'... *few minutes later* ... 'OK, I read until half past... until half past' *it's half past* 'one more chapter, its small' *gets to chapter 27* 'OK... :o   I will leave this until I get home'

There is a canticle that discusses it in WoT but the short version is that the Gods went silent THEN they started hearing whispers asking them to go to the city. Each of magisters appears to have been a high priest of each of the old gods - dumat(Corybear), Urthemiel(The Architect of Beauty), Razikale etc.

Corypheus became obsessed with reaching his gods. He had begun to doubt. His faith was shaken.  The Architect went to him and came up with a plan and a way to breach the Fade and enter the Golden City.  Corypheus - the Conductor - brought the priests together desperate to do this because he needed affirmation that his God was real. He wanted to serve. He wanted to show Dumat he was the most faithful.  The Architect was hesitant.  The rest of the magisters - from the canticle - appeared to have  agreed because they thought it would bring them power.

They didn't believe in the Maker.  That came after their time with Andraste.  She was born after the first blight which only occurred after the Magisters breached the Golden City.  The question is - was the city ever gold?  Corypheus said when he got there the city was black and the throne was empty. So where did the whispers come from? Where did they go, really? What is the Black City? What was the throne?

Apotheosis never seemed like my type of thing but I may have to look at that Donut one. One thing that bothered me (in addition to being like 70 chapters when I first heard of it) was it's written in first person. I think that sort of turns me off in fanfiction a bit, especially if it starts to get smutty. I think, based on fanart, that the Lavellan there also has some weird affairs and other things going on. Just point me toward the fluffy to mild and clever. :P Kudos to her for actually finishing though. I try and tell myself to stop reading unfinished fics.

Apotheosis? It is written in first person. Can't speak about the affairs just yet, as I am only 1/3 through

That's what I said, it's written in first person and that bothers me with fanfiction, especially if it gets smutty. In any case, from the fanart I don't think it's something I'd like but I will check out the one Sunny posted earlier. (Now that she's back from the ban zone).

Ah! Sorry, for some reason I added 'not' in my mushed brain. *too much working, not enough fic reading, clearly*

I like the fic, not absolutely everything,  some bits do annoy me slightly, but overall it is quite good. The Lavellan is very Dalish. But yeah, if you don't like things in 1st person, you will almost certainly not like it.

Modern!Solas would totally have a bachelor pad that he forgets to clean.  It never gets too gross or cluttered because he just doesn't have that much stuff, but there are piles of books everywhere  :P

Thank you (and to everyone else who answered. That question had bugged me since replaying the mission). I will have to bite the bullet and buy WoT one of these days. So many questions! I hope we do get to answer at least a few of them soon.

There is another fanfic called Keeping Secrets by ElvenSemi (hobaglavellan on Tumblr) which is written in second person, where the main character is basically supposed to be you. However, in the fic, the character "you" are supposed to be isn't a Lavellan but an elf named Emma, from all the fanart I've seen of it and shared over here. And yes, "you" are in a romance with Solas. It's a rather interesting take but I guess if you aren't into fanfics written in first person then maybe this one which is written in second person may not be your cup of tea either. xD

I personally haven't read it myself but people seem to like it well enough.

As for Doughnut Rebel, it's fluffy and cute so far and the chapters aren't too long so it should be an nice quick read. :) (There are 8 chapters so far.)

Actually, the reason I never got into Keeping Secrets is because it's written in 2nd person. It seems so great otherwise, but personally I could never get past that.

Otherwise, I'll read just about anything, as long as I think the writer's voice is well done, and in Apotheosis I find it amazing... there are some chapters where I can't believe this is a fanfic, it almost sounds like something that's gone through a full publishing cycle.

I guess sometimes I find Solas and Rial's relationship a bit too sexual, it seems so heavily focused on that, even in the non-smut chapters, but that's her vision, and I have enjoyed it a lot.

I don't mind first person narrative in general, but in fanfiction it can be a bit weird to me, especially if it gets even remotely smutty. Not knocking it since a lot of people do seem to like Apotheosis and it's impressive that it's done.

I'm generally wary of  first person narrative, be it fanfiction or not - I mean, just like everything, it CAN be done well, but in general it tends to break my suspension of disbelief way more often (I'm in this weird spot when I can never tell whether I'm supposed to observe what is happening right now through narrator's eyes or is this all his/her memories - timeline seems to be way more muddled up - as well as whether I'm supposed to directly spy on narrator's thoughts, or the piece of writing's implicating that this is all happening to ME ).
