I know, the choice is so hard!

Now that I know the backgrounds, I'm leaning more towards a female human mage than before. But I feel slightly guilty that all three heroes of Thedas would be humans.

What did you guys play in the other two games and what do you think will be your first playthrough this time?

I'll get to all the backgrounds eventually but my first playthrough will be all humans (mage Warden, warrior Hawke, mage Inquisitor).  My second playthrough will be dwarf-human-qunari (which will help with the guilt of all the humans in the first playthrough).

I've played many PC combos but I have to admit my canon is pretty similar: male rogue city elf (DW) and male rogue Hawke (archer + sarcastic). My first game will import those and I've decided on a male rogue elf (witty, probably DW?). It makes me feel a bit guilty, but I remind myself my other games are more varied.

And while I had no trouble deciding my first Inquisitor, after that... I want to do every option

I always started as a female human mage to be as "me" as possible (more cerebral than athletic). That's when I'm not metagaming and just exploring the world and discovering things. I want to start as an elf this time though because I really like the Dalish as being outside mainstream society. Also I like nature and solitude. Dalish mage is about perfect.

Just having too much fun thinking about this spy thing.

Lavellan: You're sending me where?

Keeper: It's an important mission for all elfkind.

Lavellan:  .....

Keeper: You always wanted to see more of the outside world.  Well, here's your chance.

Lavellan: Halfway across Thedas?  I was thinking more about the town around the mountain.  I could spy on them.

Keeper: There's nothing there but pig farmers.

Lavellan: Suspicious pig farmers.

Keeper: I suppose I could always find someone else.  You know, the Elders have been discussing marriage plans for you again.

Lavellan: What.

Keeper: Yes, they're losing patience with you.  They're planning on finding a match for you at the next Arlathvhen.

Lavellan: What.

Keeper: I told them you might not be available because of the importance of this mission, but they'll be delighted to hear your change of heart.

Lavellan: WHAT change of heart? I've always wanted to see the Frostbacks and spy on a group of shemlen who would like nothing better than to lock me in a tower, if not kill me on the spot.  I'm going right NOW.

Keeper: I thought you might feel that way.

My first Warden still holds my heart. She's a rogue city elf. My first Hawke was also a lady rogue (I have a preference).

I think I will stick with a female (I'm not even sorry) but I'm leaning towards a dwarf. I can see the backstory of having a thieving, shady past coupled with a the fact that I would be the only dwarf to have a known connection to the fade fascinating.

Thank the maker for multiple playthroughs.

My canon Warden is a male Surana, and Hawke is a male mage.  I love my Hawkes, but I prefer playing elf, and I've been very happy to have that choice back in DA:I.

Hiya!

No, we still don't know the last two. But, in case you didn't see, the Solas fans got some VERY suggestive hinting from his voice actor, Gareth David Lloyd.

I should have mentioned I counter my guilt about my all male rogue (+ elf and sarcastic when possible) canon by having a secondary canon that goes like this: female elven mage Warden + female aggressive warrior Hawke. I'll probably add a diplomatic female human mage to that.

Edit: all of those are bisexual, but that sameness doesn't bother me in the least  ;)

I played every combo possible in both games <3 I plan to do so again in DA:I but my first inquisitor will be a gay male elf mage with the reddest hair ever and hopefully an excess of jewelry *crosses fingers for visible jewelry including earrings*. Second will probably be a female Qunari warrior either straight or asexual, then a straight female Dwarf rogue (hopefully we get the opportunity to hit on Varric at every turn even if he's not a LI) then a female elf lesbian rogue, then whatever strikes my fancy at the time :D

First playthrough? DALISH MAGEeEeEe. I know, be more excited, right? But I can't help it! I've wanted this ever since Origins. It bummed me out to no end that to be an elf AND a mage (obvious favoritism away!) I still had to be a stinking Circle mage, especially one that was just interchangeable with the human Amell. That said, I still played it. I've played everything in Origins... except dwarves. I don't know, I'm just so not interested in dwarves. I'm not stimulated by their aesthetic or background. And then there's the whole lack of magic. No thanks. Just doesn't do it for me.

As for my canon though, I have two... I love my Surana and Cousland too much to choose between them, hah. I never really got attached to any Hawke considering how little control you have in DA2. I felt like I was picking out some hair and a tone of voice and that's it? But I made a rogue to pair off with Surana and a mage to pair off with rogue!Cousland. I'm thinking mage!Lavellan with go with Surana so it'll be elf mage + human rogue + elf mage... Don't know what to do with rogue!Cousland and mage!Hawke though... Then again, I don't even know what I'll do for a second Inquisitor! Rogue Lavellan? Seems a little repetitive with so many options... Mage human? Humans are so boring though (to me)... Mage qunari? Possibly, though I'm not really a fan of qunari... AhHhhHh so much to choose from and do, it's so exciting.  ^_^

especially the part about having choices again. yes. choices. yay.

edit because i forgot to add that these are all female characters. i've yet to play a male and the only time i might consider it is to romance Dorian... if he's half as adorable as the trailers make him seem? eep... we'll see...

edit2: i've also yet to assign a sexuality to anyone... sometimes i think about it but mostly i just kind of let their romantic escapades and LIs happen as they will... but i guess that's just me letting my panromantic flag fly, aha.

This actually might be the first DA game where I have multiple "canon" playthroughs. I play a bunch but I only have one that seriously stands out above the rest for DAO and DA2.

I think I'm going to stick with either my female elf mage or my female Qunari mage for my first DAI run. Then I'll have gone female dual wield warrior Cousland - male force mage Hawke - female mage elf/qunari. Both will definitely happen at some point though! (And I'll have to struggle to not romance Solas with both, if he's an option).

I might make a male character my third canon playthrough (and once again struggle not to put him with Solas) just because I've discovered that playing a male character of my complete creation is pretty fun! Back when I played Origins, I never wanted to touch the male option but my charming, ridiculous Hawke changed my mind. It's funny because sometimes I see female Hawkes and get confused for a moment  Hawke will always be a dude to me now.

But now I just really want Solas to be confirmed and know who he will or will not romance so I can start planning! I want to plaaaaaaan.

I have 2 canon wardens, my Althia Surana who is King Alister's unofficial wife, and the two of them are in a poly relationship with Leliana. Then I have my Edmund Cousland, who married Anora with the intention to assassinate her (with the help of Zevran) and become king of Fereldan. However he left with Morrigan through the Eluvian to be with her and their son.

For my Hawkes I really only have 1 canon one, that's Xander Hawke. He is an archer who was mostly neutral on that whol mages vs. Templar debate. He romanced Isabela and sided with the Templars in the end. With all the blood magic he'd seen and experienced, he did what was best for the city in his mind. He still tried to stay neutral through the whole thing, but still had to kill Anders even after telling him to run away. :'( He left Kirkwall to become a pirate with Isabela haha.

But as you could prolly guess my first playthrough will be Raina Lavellan, an elf rift Mage who focuses on primal and hopefully keeper based magic too. Also romancing Solas (HOPEFULLY)

I have 6 playthroughs planned though, one for each of the romances I want to do. I made a chart so each playthrough will have a diff warden and hawke for variety. All I can say is THANK THE CREATORS FOR THE DA KEEP. Also this is the first time I've ever really talked about my wardens and Hawke... I always get shy and think no one will care;;;; Solas thread making me braver!

...Though on a more serious note, those are some interesting thoughts on male PCs. I've never been down for one because, well, most games force me to be a dude?? But I never considered the differences between being stuck as some (most likely generic) predetermined dude protag versus making one that's all my own... It's something intriguing to keep in mind, so thanks!  :)

Whenever I play male characters I tend to play them as myself haha! I'm much more inventive with my lady pcs because I have to role play how they'd react. All my guys tend to be jokers.... And aggressive towards enemies, even my Shepards lol.

As a rather short *very* petite girl (5ft2 and only 6 n half stone), I love playing elves. And yet all my canon so far are male elves

I know I'm going to probably play an elf first, just not sure on male or female. Though... Female qunari calls to me too  Think I'll leave that for second though  :P

That's funny, because I'm a woman and my only male Warden is a lot more like me than any of my female characters. I think it's because I half-assed him out of the gate, so he has my voice while the others had a lot of consideration and time put into them.

But I like consistency and connections between my playthroughs (ie. I am dullsville). My canon Cousland is a female reaver who romanced Alistair, made him king and remained his mistress. She slept with Isabela in Origins and [headcanon] had a fling with Anders before eventually meeting and falling for Warden Bethany Hawke [/headcanon]. My Hawke is also a reaver, who slept with Isabela and romanced Anders. I'm not gonna go out of my way to connect my canon Inquisitor Trevelyan through other characters, but she will be a reaver who romances Solas, or no one.

I'm about that height and size too! (like 3cm taller) *high five* :P  I think that's why I'm more attracted to playing elves too, they feel more like I can play as myself. And well, now that I've read the backstory for the elves (Dalish spy ohmygod that's AWESOME!  :wub:I'm 100% sure that I'm going to play a Dalish mage first. I can just see her standing in a dark corner at the conclave, listening to anything remotely useful but really not wanting to be there. Ah, it's going to be great!

I'm so glad they've finally give us the back stories.   It looks like I won't be able to use my current female elf mage idea because it doesn't really fit.   However, I really like the idea of being an elf mage spy so I'm going to rework her story so I'm clear on her character before I play.    I've already got my male human mage written and it fits perfectly with what they have given us with just a few tweaks.

I still trying to decide on whether to go with my first Warden from Origins, a male Dalish elf rogue who ended up with Zevran and either did ultimate sacrifice (Alistair as king) or let Alistair do the noble deed because he wanted to (leaving Anora as Queen), my female elf mage who kept Alistair with her in the Wardens or my male human noble who married Anora, kept Zevran as his lover, spared Alistair and let Loghain do the ultimate sacrifice (because he wanted to).    I'll use them all eventually, plus others, but it's just which one I want to go with on first run through.

My first run through will definitely be with my first Hawke, a female mage, who romanced Fenris and sided with the mages at the end.  In view of the fact that this Hawke is a mage and my first Inquisitor will be a mage, I was thinking that having my Warden as mage as well might be a bit of overkill.    Still it would strengthen up the argument that not only mages can be trusted with power but without them Thedas would be probably still fighting a Blight in Ferelden and have Qunari ruling Kirkwall.

Oh man all the background snippets sound really interesting! Granted I think im going to stick with qunari rogue for my first play through at the momemt. Then some kind of mage, likely dalish for the next... that or the dwarf origin. Its going to be so hard to decide what to play first, and I wish we would get the last two LI announced cause I want to plan too haha.

If Solas is a LI I think he'll get my female elven rogue. She was going to go for Sera, but I'm liking Solas a lot lately. Maybe I'll make Sera a human noble instead...

It would be hilarious if Solas was taking a nap inside the Temple of Sacred Ashes prior to the explosion:

Solas: (munching on some food from the banquet table) What's with the party?

Lavellan: What? How did you find me?

Solas: Your a Dalish elf in the middle of a human party. It's not that complicated to notice you.

It would make sense. Certain choices in Origins can lead to a significant decrease in population for some areas
