I'm about that height and size too! (like 3cm taller) *high five*   I think that's why I'm more attracted to playing elves too, they feel more like I can play as myself. And well, now that I've read the backstory for the elves (Dalish spy ohmygod that's AWESOME!  ) I'm 100% sure that I'm going to play a Dalish mage first. I can just see her standing in a dark corner at the conclave, listening to anything remotely useful but really not wanting to be there. Ah, it's going to be great!

I think it's one of the biggest draws to me liking elves in the DA setting, because even in other games where you can play a female protag, you usually end up having to play a tall woman/ average height, usually with large breasts and legs that go on forever, basically looking like a super-model. While playing elves feels more like my perspective, short living in a world of generally tall people, having them look down on you and almost always underestimating you (which can be handy ), but at the same time I can still rise up and take everyone by surprise and be epic

Another great thing to me is that they aren't like elves in other IPs, they aren't tall, elegant almost mythical beings that everyone else looks up to, instead they're the underdogs, which a lot of people can connect with I think. And then when you're awesome, it always feels so much better!

Yaaay! *hugs* And I know right!? I've sometimes felt a bit uneasy playing a female Hawke and romancing Fenris, just because it looks so silly in some scenes (kiss scene looking at you grrrr.. ) when it looks like she's towering over him, and I'm shorter than literally everyone I know looking at my screen like   I could go ranting on about everything you said but I'll just be agreeing and nodding like crazy because you literally just wrote down my exact thoughts , all those reasons are pretty much why I was dancing of joy when I found out that we had actual option to choose our race in DA:I instead of being tied down to a human again (but maybe that just partially has to do with me having a soft spot for elves in general) Surprise badasses for the win! *cough* Ok ehm, so that adorkable Solas hm..

Awwwyeaaahhhh all these character models and backstory reveals are what I've been waiting for!
- The Adaar backstory still works with what I had in mind, which is a brother/sister Adaar team where something happens and whoever survives ends up being the Inquisitor for that play through. (Yanno, kinda like the Hawke story except I got Inquisitor Bob and my female Adaar who still lacks a name.) It might be one of them died during an earlier mission while working for the company, or one of them dies during the big-bad that happens at the beginning of the game- whatever it is it still works.

I'm also a bit closer to the ground, but I have a strong affinity for the female qunari. (Or just qunari in general) I think it's less a matter of height and more that I get an emotion from them than a descriptor used on an object. Qunari are 'imposing' and 'intimidating' and less an 'object of beauty', at least in my mind. And because of their religious counterparts I'm sure everyone assumes the worst upon first impression. (Or at least the humans.) I dunno, I guess it's more like they're going to have to work extra hard to earn the respect of others and -well- I guess that is reinforced by an earlier statement I believe someone said about Adaar Inquisitors having an exceptionally difficult time in Inquisition. (To the point where a particular conflict can not be avoided if you're a qunari Inquisitor.) 

And a dwarf, I'm ready to play one of those this time around.

But this is off topic, I must say I do like the 'caption this' picture posted earlier. Solas looks so upset, for reasons I don't know, it's great. I also wonder if we can ever have a conversation about his toes. Not just put actual shoes on him, but go up to him and be like 'so about your toes Solas... why?' I think Sera always covers hers (at least, in all of the pictures I've seen of her they have been covered), so it can't be a universal elf thing. Then again, apparently Sera does not get along with Solas and Cassandra. (Or what I'd assume is this set up as Cole/ Cassandra/ and Solas get along.) Different views and different mindsets.

I had a look around some other character threads and feel so traumatized now. Not judging anyone or anything, but wow. Much as people here love to joke about Solass or guiltily post screenshots where the shadows are kind to Solas in the pants region, I have never felt like I wanted to claw my eyes out reading this thread. He is just a fictional character, but somehow has managed to avoid outright objectification thus far. Thank you. Thank you all.

 

But speaking of those screenshots, Solas has the most silly-cute sneer on his face in some of them. How does a character manage to be badass and adorable at the same time?

Oh gosh I'm laughing so much imagining an Inquisitor just walking up to Solas like: "The feet. Why?" And he's just so confused because who asks something like that out of nowhere. 

 

I still hope that we can give him full shoes at appropriate times! I don't care how tough elf feet are, those toes would fall off if he had to climb snowy mountains barefoot. Unless he has magic feet?

 

I was also going to play a Qunari inquisitor first but ever since we learned the backgrounds, a female human mage has been clawing at me and insisting that Solas should be hers. Darn it, I wasn't even going to play a human before this.

It is awfully endearing, isn't it?  His hands always look so nice in screenshots too.  He has lovely hands.

I'm hoping doing so will ease my worries, for now.

I 100% agree. It's actually a large part of why I rarely post in the threads about other characters (many of which I'm almost as excited/curious about) and have made my forum 'home' here. Like you, I don't want to judge, and I'm no prude, but some of the things in the other threads make me uncomfortable, and makes me understand why the writers at times feel that the 'romance' (read: sex) talk seems to outweigh interest in who the characters actually are. Sure, there's some innuendo and silliness re: Solass and his magic pants and such, but, I have never seen the above be the case here. I think partly because we're a bunch of hippies in love with Solas' big beautiful brain. 

 

And yes, love Solas' scrunchy mad-face!

Not me I'm not a Hippy lol..more of the conservative type I am. But I do love Solas's big Beautiful brain...actually I love everything about Solas so far! 

And I'm glad it hasn't gotten real dirty in here too like the IB thread....

 

Anyways  I always end up playing Human cause it's what I am it's familiar to me,now I have played dalish and city elf but I never get far with other races the farthest I've gotten is Orzammar. So I will definitely be playing Human first....and then maybe a female elf.

Yeah I'm certainly not a prude or anything too but i'm glad this thread hasn't gotten super raunchy too, out of respect for those that don't want to see it. There's also the issue that we don't know the ages of all the people posting or that might view that sort of content on the forums. So it's better to err on the side of caution I feel.

 

The fact Solas comes off as very intelligent appeals to me as well. I've always had a thing for smart guys.

Haha... i wouldn't call myself a hippy either... I'm way too angry and like to rant, I think.   Regardless, we can all be Solas-loving unicorns. Or something.   

 

Yeah, the new background reveals make we want to play ALL the races, even though I'll probably be boring and play mostly human women because that's what I always do. I'm even more excited about playing my human rogue though! I wanted her to be a black sheep and a rebel, and since I envisioned her as agnostic anyway, the Chantry focus in her family will be one more way for her to be a big o'l disappointment for the parents. Falling for a certain scruffy elf apostate twenty years her senior will just be icing on the weird misshapen cake that is her life!   It also makes her being the 'Herald of Andraste' that much more intriguing - I'm almost tempted to have her embrace the title, but I'll have to see how the game presents it - and how she ends up developing as a character.

Someone who came from a rough place and a rough family but isn't really rough themselves is a character trope I really love. And if anyone could look past a criminal background, it definitely seems like it'd be Solas. I can just see him with a young, sarcastic Cadash who calls people things like "kid" and "bub".

Solas: "Inquisitor, I'm almost 20 years older than you."

Hahaha, yup, if we get no Varric love then my Cadash will be with Solas, she'll be sassy and sarcastic too, but she'll have a kind heart.  I love that trope too, we've been talking about possible problems with the background in the Varric thread, and then I thought about how Solas would be great comfort for a sad Cadash.

I fully intend to go with an elf rogue first time around, but I keep looking at the Qunari female and thinking how beautiful she is. I may use her for my mage playthrough. She would also have no time or interest for IB and would be all about Josephine. Maybe. I'll have to see what they're like once we get to meet them in game.

you know, reading through just about 50 pages worth of posts actually doesn't take too long if you're determined enough (like me).

 

And on the topic of Inquisitors; I have 2 main canons, cause why not?

 

First is Alim Surana who romanced Morrigan (and in my head canon saved her and the kid from Templars before becoming a Spirit of Peace in the Fade) and Mage Female Hawke. With this one, I plan on my Irayna Lavellan being a mage. There's a pattern, as you can see.

 

Second is Kridan Mahariel who romanced Zevran (before disappearing into God knows where b/c why not) and Rogue Female Hawke. So I was thinking maybe another rogue to follow the pattern. Or I was planning on a Renee Trevelyn mage. I might do her later though, maybe mess around with the world states with the Keep or something.

 

Finally, as I didn't notice it posted here, a bit of art that I put up on Tumblr of a Chibi!Solas I drew when I got to the hotel in Arizona.

I'm sorry you had a tough day. ;_; I know how you feel...had a pretty terrible one myself and I had an accident at school from anxiety and thinking about Solas and Dragon Age made it all bearable. I hope you have a better day tomorrow.

I don't feel strongly about the... intense?  Appearance and sex talk (I have no room to talk honestly) but I do appreciate that this thread is one where just about anyone can feel comfortable.  For an internet environment, it is very safe.  Everyone here is wonderful. ♥
