With revelations being what they are, and how that changes the opinions some had on Solas, I hope we can still go on being a thread full of people who can discuss the good and bad points of the character and not have it become the Anders 2.0 flamewar. I full respect and understand some people hate Solas now, or at least are drastically different in their view from where they started the day. I still like him just fine, and my Lavellan is taking it as her personal mission to talk him down if she can, but I know that's not how everyone rolls. I just think it would be a tragedy to the discussion of lore and the theorycrafting that has gone on in here if the thread splits into haters vs. romancers.

 

I guess in time people will fade away until the next game is announced anyhow, but until then... let's keep it good, whether you still like or love Solas or not. We've had a damn good thing here, I'd hate to see that end before its time too.

I'll always come back, might not be here every day. But I'm going to be keeping tabs on this thread for a long time. It tided me over before Inquisition came out, kept me busy reading interesting speculation and theories after Inquisition, and even now at the "close" of Inquisition, I find that I am still a little infatuated with Solas' character and that's going to keep me coming back here in the time it takes the next Dragon Age game to come out.

The one thing I was disappointed about (and not really, but I'd hoped for it), was no mention of the blight. I think that's the one missing piece of the puzzle here - I'm pretty sure it pre-dates Corypheus and the magisters entering the fade physically. If removing the veil can somehow deal with the blight permanently, then I think Solas' plans are (slightly) less murderously batshit. (seriously, he makes murderpope Leliana look as harmless as a mouse, in comparison.)

 

I would hope it comes down to more than elven supremacist who struggles to see us as people vs. everything else.

I miss the days when I thought Solas was just an antisocial fade nerd who was unexpectedly sweet and kind and compassionate.

I'm always a bit confused why people think that if someone does bad things or has evil plans, they are automatically puppy kicking people full of hate who like watching others suffer. Solas does care for others, and that's evidenced by his actions through DAI. He doesn't want people to suffer, even if he ends up seeing the as collateral damage. That doesn't make him right, and doesn't make his actions good, but he's still the same person that helped an injured woman in the Hinterlands. We just know more of who he is than we did then.

 

And this is why I appreciate writers who can make a character nuanced. It makes you pause, makes you think, and it offers a more broad understanding to the world the character exists in. Maybe even your own. Whatever becomes of Solas and the future, I still stand by my belief that Weekes will do the character and story justice, and not just have a superbad evil villain OR a pushover goody goody who will give up his driving goal and beliefs just from a finger being shaken in his naughty face. I really am looking forward to the future now.

Here's the thing. Good intentions only go so far. It's obvious he cares but then again he's still attempting to burninate the world. In fact, that makes it worse in a way. It shows how removed he is from reality. It shows how much he considers himself other to the people of thedas. It shows that his morals exist in abstract, rather than in true empathy. I love that his morality is revealed to be super twisted, but I still consider him a villain (just not a mustache twirling one...not enough facial hair).

I really, really, really, REALLY want the protagonist of DA4 to be the Inquisitor (former or otherwise). They have the most chips in the game (other than Solas himself, I suppose) even if they didn't romance him... and a romanced Lavellan? Whoo boy. Like, I want this to the degree where I don't know what I'll think of it if they announce some new Big Damn Hero.

 

Also, as someone who is disabled IRL, I REALLY want to actually get to play a disabled protagonist. Even with a prosthetic, it ain't gonna be perfect, and it shouldn't be. Hell, all Alleyana needs there is something to strap a shield to and she'll be fighting at about 80-90% capacity once she's fully adapted to it. Which hey, that's one way to tone down her combat OP-ness at the start of a new game. (That and no Anchor, of course.)

 

Anyway. Please bioware, no more random new protags. This one is perfectly set up to tackle the next game's plot, even with a new cast of followers. Let's do that.

I'm not going to defend what he's trying to do. It's wrong-headed and awful. But I think he knows this. Really, he knew it all along. Dehumanizing the entirety of Thedas was the only way he could go through with it. At the end of the day he can't live with the guilt of destroying his world.

 

I think he started seeing the Inquisitor as a person, and then fell in love with her. That would've been even before the first kiss. After all, in that scene she's already apparently, "[changed] everything". But even if he doesn't fall in love with the Inquisitor, just spending time with a morally upstanding, sympathetic person has shaken him so much that a large part of him really doesn't want to do this anymore. And that's just one person. No wonder he was trying so very hard to stay aloof while he was with the Inquisition. Didn't work, though.

 

I have to wonder if the best plan wouldn't be something like, Operation: Get Solas Some Goddamn Friends.

 

Plus, one of the most mind-blowing revelations of this new DLC is that he's only been around for a year. A single year! A year ago he was back in his own world. That is insane. Imagine you woke up in a nuclear wasteland when just last week you thought you'd created cold fusion.

 

 

Man, it's all starting to sink in now.     Really, this just fits perfectly with everything we've already known about Solas. Especially the stuff he says to an Inquisitor he hates (ha, I was right, you're all @ssholes...therefore I am justified in going through with my plan to DESTROY THE WORLD). Bravo, Weekes. Mind = blown.

 

I mean, I still adore Solas but I am loving this dark twist on things. He's still everything I thought he was, but I do think he has a biiiit of a gasket loose.

 

I am super looking forward to beating him over the head with The Power of Friendship until he realizes what a moron he's being (...that's totally how DA4's gonna go, right?)

I am done with Tresspasser. This is my initial reaction before having caught up with the thread or read anyone else's impressions.

A while ago I posted that the saddest ending for me would be seeing Solas become corrupted in a way that he betrays the very moral principles he professes to uphold. Well, shit. I really think he has gotten into that territory. I suspected he created the veil and that his plan would be something that endangers modern Thedas, but actually seeing that play out is very, very devastating. The way he talks about it, saying, "I am not a monster. If these people are to die, I would at least let them have some comfort first." (Totally not an exact quote.) It makes him sound like he is a monster who is rationalizing his actions. 

 

I can see his point of view. He has lost everything and the pain of that loss is driving him towards a desperate attempt to restore what was. In his pain he does not want to see that the world has changed and that there are new, real people living in it now, and these are living beings that he has to destroy. Still doesn't make it right. 

 

I was thoroughly spoiled and was dreading the scene where he takes Lavellan's hand, but compared to everything else he said in that scene, the hand thing ended up looking like a gesture of kindness, by far the most humane thing he did. And that says a lot. 

 

So, all in all, I feel so, so, so sad for him. But I did like the option where the Inquisition (I totally kept it running)  is hunting him to try to save him from himself rather than defeat him. 

 

And last but not least... Oh, boy, TEVINTER! I literally screamed with excitement when she struck her knife on that spot on the map. This complements my particular headcanon so well.

 

Iron Bull's betrayal... Meh. I really liked his character, but he acted so weird from the start of the DLC that it was just obvious it was coming, and amidst the emotional turmoil of everything else I guess I didn't have any feels left. 

 

I need time and Nutella now.

I almost cried with Dorian, because I honestly kind of forgot he and my elf got on so well. I can play anyway I want but somehow I always end up with him and my Inquisitor sitting in a tree... with a good view of some muscular lads training. I will say that all of Solas' expressions and tones, were ... really damn pathetic. I was like "STOP IT, Puppy." But obviously he'd be terribly sad, it's just kind of traumatizing to watch his face that whole time. So utterly changed.

I fully agree. I don't think the story is going to just rest as it is though, and I'd be really surprised and frankly disappointed if we don't get to see some evolution of this through whatever game concludes the whole thing. I expect it to be complex, and the choices we can make in the future and whatever interaction we might have with Solas again to be something more than a handful of insults flung across a battlefield. Maybe he'll be a character we can never redeem. Maybe he'll decide to stand down but it's too late and something bad happens anyway. Maybe he can find peace, either through the friendship and/or love he developed in his time with the inquisition, or maybe we'll be able to put him to rest for good. I'm eager to see what comes.

I went with continue the Inquisition under the Divine (Leliana) and working as a peacekeeping organisation.

 

While there is the possibility for history to repeat like the previous Inquisition and obviously there might be holes Solas' spies can slip through, I couldn't bring myself to disband something that brought people together and had done so much good for so many. Rather than sit on it's laurels and bask in the glory after having saved the world, the whole point of the Inquisition was that it should never stop trying to save the world or helping people.

 

And if Solas knows we're watching, that just means that Solas has one more reason to rethink his plans, because he knows we are watching.

 

As an odd little side note, did anyone else find it somewhat amusing that like the old Dalish tale about the Dread Wolf and the Mabari, we can end with Lavellan watching guard to thwart Solas' plans, prepared to hound his steps and try to keep the wolf from harming the people?

There's Solas and then there's the Solas thread. Honestly I haven't sorted out how I feel about him yet. I don't think I'll ever hate him, but I'm leaning very strongly towards sad disapproval. And from a meta standpoint, I'm a bit angry that they screwed up the character. But I still think he has his good sides of course. So I hope it doesn't devolve into a flamewar and white vs. black discussion as well. 

 

I totally expect the Solas hate generally on the interwebs to go up by 100000% though.

Here's the way my Lavellan saw it; no matter how much oversight the Inquisition had under the Chantry, there were always going to be holes.  Why hand Solas more weapons?  Besides, from her perspective, armies and influence will only slow Solas down.  They won't stop him.  People are going to stop him, and that personal connection is always stronger with a smaller band of friends than a large organization.

 

And she still remembers how history went.  Cass/Leliana/Viv might be a personal friend who's on your side, but she didn't want the Inquisition back in bed with the Chantry for the long haul.

This is basically how Alleyana saw it too. Plus he's keen on you concentrating on the Inquisition and "enjoying a few years of peace" -- hell with that, Lavellan's always been good at doing what he doesn't expect. Ditch the weight of that huge organization and go for speed and security.

 

That and Alley's always been aware of what a juggernaut she was building, once it got big enough that she got named Inquisitor. Assuming the organization was still around after she was invariably gone... who would it go to? DA (and real life) is chock full of "formed with a good cause, gradually goes corrupt" things like this. Including the original chantry, from the sounds of it. She's wanted to disban, or "put away the swords" as Mother Giselle put it early in vanilla DAI, but only if it could be done smoothly. This I think was as clean a break as it could get.

How so did they screw up the character? This was apparently all planned out from the early stages of DAO, so the only thing that might have screwed it up is having the romance added at all. I'm glad it was, because I love the extra level of things we get to see and learn and experience for as little as we got. If anything, maybe that will change or add options in the future games. We have, what, another three years to find out?

... But that's assuming that Fen'Harel is the worst threat that ever happened to this world. We know that it isn't. Blight, Old Gods, and Evanuris, who DO seem to working their way to go back into the world.... We still don't know how Titans factor into this... Or Mythal.

 

It might be that this world is either doomed or indeed has very slim chances of survival, no matter what Dread Wolf decides. Don't forget that when Solas complains about Wardens and Varric makes a point about stopping the Blight, Solas tells him "They bought us some time... I will grant them that".

 

He's not the only player on the field and doesn't seem to just have Inquisition as his opponents in the next game.

 

Far-fetched prediction: DA4 will be about Tevinter and fighting or searching for Dread Wolf and his forces - eventually it will end with grand confrontation, during which the world will change drastically either way, though not necessarily with Dread Wolf winning, even in a scenario where Inqusition fails to stop him. DA5 will be fought against whoever Solas tried to stop or raced against to get their chance to remake the world; be it Old Gods, Blight, Enavuris or else.

This is the first game that got be sobbing. ME3 made me cry, especially with Citadel DLC, but this.... omg this....

The chase was awesome through out the whole DLC. I was worried for a bit that Solas would actually die and pass the power on to us. Ugh, I was an emotional wreck through it all; it was amazing (lol) Goodness, I didn't want him to leave but I look forward to the future. Hopefully their love will persuade him.

 

Perfect Bioware, just utter perfection. I definitly want more but omg. That was beautiful and and and everything. My emotions are still raw lol; literally just finished it. I'm more hurt by Bull than anything. And so worried for Dorian!! 

 

So much going through my head. Feeling those feels, but in a really good way. I need to process everything tonight.

I was fully expecting the Inquisitor to have the option to die, disappear (not necessarily with Solas mind you), continue the Inquisition or disband the Inquisition.  But the fact that the Inquisitor actually cannot die or disappear AND continues the search for Solas either to kill him or try to change his mind means that the Inquisitor's story really isn't over.  I don't know how they'll pull off a new protagonist in DA4.  I said earlier in the thread that depending on how this DLC ends that I was ready to be done with the Inquisitor.  And now I'm really not cause the Inquisitor obviously isn't done.

 

I'm hoping they've already started work on the next DA game even though it'll be at least a couple of years before we hear anything at all.  Maybe Fallout 4 and Mass Effect: Andromeda will keep me distracted for at least a little bit.

The DLC left me with two theories as far as Mythal goes-

 

a. She's completely focused on revenge, so her only interest is getting Solas to break the veil. In which case the evanuris will be free, and she'll be able to enact her revenge plot. I don't think her merger with Solas is going to be a permanent one- she could potentially just shed off of him and leave him powerless.

b. She has no interest in seeing the world destroyed, as she has children in it that would not survive elven world order. In this case she probably has some contingency in place, likely with Morrigan, that will ensure a safe merger of the old and the new. And also revenge, because why not.

And pretty much everything I expected about Solas was confirmed. Yet it STILL f***ed me up, darn it, Solas. Of all his lines, it was that "Thank you" response to when you said you never thought he'd be a person to do something like this that got me the most. You can just hear that guilt in his voice and even see it in his face! He knows this is messed up, but he's going to do it anyways. I wonder if we really will get the chance to change his heart. Or if we'll get a choice I thought would be interesting to get months ago: whether or not to keep the Veil!

 

Also those ending cards to the romance were SO fanfiction I just started laughing. If I had a quarter for every time I saw the "Solas watches sadly in wolf form when Lavellan is dreaming" thing in fandom, I'd have the cost for DA4 more than covered!

 

On that note: TE-VIN-TER! TE-VIN-TER! TE-VIN-TER!!!! In the end, I was more satisfied by this than I thought I would be so I'm happy as a clam! Except my Inquisitor accidentally ended up living with Sera and that wasn't really my intention but hey, crossbow arms are pretty rad.
