So, I love this character. However, every time time I play through the ending and he pretty much tells me that in order for his people to live he has to kill mine and that I should not worry about that, but the inquisition. I want to throw the worst *itch fit ever!

I'm taking a medieval literature course this semester, where we read actual Old and Middle English texts from their original source, with fewer and fewer translation aids the further we go. We're almost at the stage now where we use very minimal translation aids, so I think I'm pretty decent. (Although I'm no professor, so don't quote me on it.)

 

This... is far from Old, Middle, or even "very old" English (compare The Canterbury Tales modern version verses its original Middle English version ), but it does borrow some basic Middle English spelling and pronunciation conventions. Specifically, Old and Middle English did not have any set spelling standards. Different vowels and consonants could make the same sound depending on placement and context, so you could see the same word spelled many different ways on the same role of parchment. (Here's a Middle English vowel pronunciation guide  ).

 

In general though, the "Y" made the same sound as the Middle English long "I" ("ee"), so Y was often interchangeable with "I" ("ee") in spelling (much like today in some cases   ). I'm sure we're all familiar with the middle English "tyme" alternate spelling to the modern "time"? However, neither "tyme" or "time" was pronounced as it was today. "Time" in middle English would have been pronounced "tee-muh," and "tyme" also "tee-muh." Much like how "knight" or "knyght" would have been pronounced "k-nee-t.")

 

Long story short: Yes. Since our modern "it" sounds almost similar to "eet" (all things considered), the "ee" sound of the Middle English Y could be interchangeable with "ee" sound of "It."

 

It seems the only vowels they really play with here are Y and E. Here's a Canterbury prologue text read-out-loud, so you can get an idea of how Middle English letters were pronounced. ("E" being "eh," "ay," or "uh" depending on word, placement, and context, and Y always making an "ee" sound when it appears.)

I look really forward to seeing where it goes...and I actually very much appreciate it from a story-telling standpoint that they didn't let you pull a Witch Hunt level cop-out and just join him and all is well. It's much more interesting this way.

 

This being the most interesting romance in the series continues, anyway.

If I were in Solas's shoes...I'm not sure I'd act any differently.  If I woke up to see that the world had regressed to, say, 700s style technology and social structure, and felt I could do something about it, I'd probably try my damnest to get back home.

 

If you've ever been homesick, take that feeling of loss and longing, multiply it by about a hundred, and now add the guilt of it being entirely your own fault that you've lost your home forever.  That's what Solas is feeling.  That's the perspective that informs his (admittedly poor) judgment.  I still think he's an idiot, but I can't help feeling for him.

I'm not good at English at all - it's not my native language - but that's the impression I got from reading this letter. Just my gut feelings and wild guesses

I wanted to be a Rift Mage, to use my Anchor, to learn from Solas and to be united by it (especially because Rift Mages actually have an extra dialogue option during Solas' quest), but eventually I decided to be a Knight-Enchanter, because she could protect Solas with her skills, and I just admired Arcane Warriors so much.

 

And now that Trespasser is over, I'm, um, happy I haven't chosen Rift Mage, but chose Knight-Enchanter instead.

In non sad feels news, I should totally write some Lavellan-Dorian BFF fics to cheer myself up. My goodness that was sweet and adorable. Also the rumblings in politics and the mysterious death of his father seems like some good setup for the Tevinter stuff we'll be seeing.

I know! He is just a wonderful character with so many layers....like an onion. They have done a magnificent job with his animation and the voice actings in great ! The lore in the game alone makes it outstanding to play.

So here's what Solas says about his AWESOME PLAN:

 

"I would have entered the Fade, using the mark you now bear.  Then I would have torn down the Veil.  As this world burned in the raw chaos, I would have restored the world of my time...the world of the elves."

 

Restored it with what?  Probably not the modern elves, but now we have our answer.  He would have restored the elvhen with spirits from the Fade.  He would have drawn forth spirits to basically become the new, immortal elvhen alongside whatever remains of the ancient elvhen.

I just finished Trespasser. I don't know how people who have finished the game have even been able to gather their thoughts to the point where they can form any sort of cogent response with real thoughts in it. Like I have just been running through like 150 possible outcomes and reasons for everything Solas did and said and don't even understand what I am feeling except for general feelings. Like, uhh, there are feelings. There you have it. That is all I know.

 

I will say that I think that Bioware allowed Team Optimism to keep a tiny tiny flag of hope in that I don't think they would give us the option to even try to "save our friend from himself" if there were not at least a "somehow meaningfully less shitty than it could be" end for Solas and Lavellan in the next game(s). Good effing lord, when Bioware does "morally grey" they REALLY give you the full range of tones. If someone like Loghain can be spared and redeemed, and someone like Blackwall can turn his life around, when it comes down to it, DA:I is often about recognizing moral nuance and celebrating personal change and growth.

 

It's going to take me a good few days of processing and writing out notes and mulling things over to even get to the point of, like, real theories or anything. Or even knowing what to say.

Also can we all thank Corypheus for being there to unwittingly postpone Solas' rrrreally well thought-out plan to absolve himself of his guilt by DESTROYING THE WORLD? Like, is Solas so smooth that he can convince me he's still really a just a wonderful but totally damaged guy when he suggests letting everyone in Thedas just die so he can restore one race to its former glory? SOLAS WHAT. Tell me this isn't the WHOLE TRUTH yet! Maybe he's... double bluffing for some reason? GAH!

Its also possible that all 'original' elvhen originated in this fashion. We still don't know how Mythal was able to survive after being killed. Solas says they 'were mortal' but also that 'his people are hard to kill.' 
 
Tinfoil hat theory- but its also possible that this is how slaves originated. Eventually spirit elves breed, and produce completely physical elves that lack the talents of their progenitors.

I think he's insistent that Cole remain a spirit because if he becomes more human, he'll be a casualty. It does seem like he plans on making spirits the new People, along with his elven followers. If Cole became more physical then, then he'd be fine. As is...*grimace*

The original drawings and concept art showed Solas with glorious hair. I believe the creation of the Veil not only made him really weak and drained that he had to sleep for millennia to regain some semblance of his powers back, I also think it made him lose all his hair on his head.

 

So now he intends to destroy the Veil, what else do you think he will physically lose ?

I understood it more like "the fade and spirits pour back into this world and ppl Will be confused and chaos and ppl flipping out, maybe kill each other b/c they go crazy. Also demons running around freely, etc.

But I didn't understand it like "zack boom bang everyone is dead."

Finished Trespasser yesterday. I have so many questions...

1. I am dead inside, although seeing Patrick's tweet that we might get - at least he is hoping to give us - closure, makes me feel slightly better

 

2. Wow, I was in the camp 'Solas couldn't have killed Felassan'... how I was wrong. I still don't understand  why, especially since Solas managed to wake up Eluvians afterwards anyway

 

3. I still confused about what path Solas has to walk to bring back the world that was before. That path that is death? I probably have missed some explanation or something while I was creaming internally. Did anyone understand what he is up to, the general 'I will destroy this world'

 

4. Super happy the Pantheon were not actually Gods... super happy about that

 

5. My game glitched and for some reason Gaspard was the Emperor of Orlais... did that happen to anyone else?
