He created the Veil to trap the Evanuri, ok. Did he trap the rest of the ancient elves along with them? Doesn't seem so because Evanuri's slaves who were saved by him were the ancestors of Dalish and city elves, and they seem to be doing ok in the real world. What's with this selective trapping? Something doesn't add up. Unless of course something was wrong with those slaves, maybe that's why Solas also considers them as non-people, arrogant ass.

So rest of the elves which I assume the ''slaves'' etc. whatever they were saved but he said he made them mortal. '' It was not the humans that caused us aging....... it was me '' the veil destroyed their world making them age and he said that '' it destroyed their world.. even themselves ''
I personally think Dalish and City elves are just related to them. Not totally pure.. and after time they have became something else. Evolution. I noticed that ancient elves were a lot taller. We can also see that on Solas. Solas is taller than other elves. Also the language changed. Kind of like ancient latin language. We can learn somehow to read it.. but everyone who knows how to speak it is dead so we do not really know the pronounciation.
I think Solas do not consider them his people because they were not pure they were not the powerful magisters..I feel like he considers the ones like him as his people. Strong powerful immortal magisters who ruled the elvhenan.

I would be alright with playing a new character - however, I'm really AFRAID of how they would treat Quizzy. Hawke's cameo already split the fans into two sides. "Omg Hawke!" versus "That is NOT my Hawke!". That was bad enough. Imagine the uproar if they did that to an Inquisitor who, most likely, has a supporting role instead of just a cameo. I don't want to see my hotblooded and feisty warrior elf, who is all about being powerful but has a huge sense of responsibility deep down and badmouths people but is still concerned to treat everyone right as long as it doesn't hurt HER turn into a mushy pile of anger and less than perfect judgement of situations...

On Inquisitor, Solas, Corypheus, Ameridan & the World

Something that remained with me after finishing this DLC are Morrigan's words. In the epilogue Morrigan says, "’Tis said that Corypheus woke after his long slumber and found the world gone awry."

 

In the final discussion with Solas he says that when he woke up a year before the explosion at the Conclave it was like everyone was Tranquil. He's determined to bring back existence as he remembers it, no matter the cost.

 

This is very similar to the next line in the initial epilogue narrated by Morrigan, "He fought to bring back those days of magic and shadow, to raise himself as a god, and set things right."

 

However, I think possibly the most apt parallels is one you can draw with yourself: Your Inquisitor's reaction to In Hushed Whispers is perhaps the most telling.

 

When your Inquisitor are sent into the future, you see a world in total chaos and misery. At any point, did you think to yourself, "Maybe I should look into this more, and not try to erase this future?"

 

Erasing this future means destroying anyone who was born. Erasing bad things, of course, but good things, too, even if they seem few. There must be some good things that were present in that world. Perhaps we could have helped the resistance fight the Elder One and take him down instead of erasing the timeline.

 

However, you and Dorian never stop and consider that you should salvage this world or save it. This world is abhorrent to you. A total catastrophe, and failing abomination. Of course you are going to restore the world you knew. Whatever the flaws of your own world, it is surely better than what you see? Dorian even repeats this to character such as Leliana who replied that this world was real to them regardless of what you say.

 

There are parallels with Corypheus, yes, but Corypheus, at least, woke to a world that was not too altered. Corypheus lived in a time with the Veil. On the other hand, you entered into and Solas woke to a world that is torn apart from the one both of you respectively knew.

 

Let us take this further. What if you were sent 20 years in the future? 200? 2000 ? The people kicking around then, all corrupted by Red Lyrium, even the children. The people live as long as 20 or 30. All slaves to Corypheus unless you are magister, a human and a citizen of Tevinter.

 

Yet they insist, no, their world is fine. It is all good. Though, you know that there was a world that you can return that was so much better. These people, despite being miserable, corrupted slaves, they see value in themselves. Do you erase them anyway? Or do you let this world continue as it goes? That is the world Solas woke up to.

 

Solas woke up to a world with little magic...A world where Titans slept, Dwarves are sundered, Great Dragons are mere beasts, Elves are weak shadows of themselves...A world where Spirits are feared, where there is massive conflict every 5 to 10 years, where mages are locked up in a tower...A world where there exists philosophies such as the Qun and a world that still practices slavery, especially of Elves...

 

To Solas, this world must have appeared to be like how our Inquisitors saw the future world in the quest In Hushed Whispers. The Inquisitors proceeds to undo it within an instant whereas Solas at least try to make sense of it.

 

In Solas' position, I think you know what most of us would choose.The more I think about it, the more I understand where Solas' and Corypheus' are coming from. I cannot hate them. I can dislike them out of a sense of self preservation but I would pity them as well.

 

The worst part is that the Inquisitor, in game, does what Solas and Corypheus do, albeit on a smaller scale. We traveled to the future, found a world that is abhorrent to us and sought to unmake it. We did so without hesitation, without doubt, without question and without any second thought to the people in that world. In fact, I think only Ameridan was the only person from the past who was okay with the future world.

 

The reality is that those who are calling for Solas' deaths and those who hate him are hypocrites, doubly so if they did the quest In Hushed Whispers. Upon further reflection, I do not want to kill Solas. I would stop him and only resort to killing him if there is no other choice. For the simple reason the Inquisitor is no different than Solas.

 

Personally, even I would do what Solas, Corypheus and Inquisitor did if I were put in their position. Without remorse, without hesitation and without fail. I would restore the world to what I knew unless if this alternate world is significantly superior in some way.

The betrayal doesn't come until the end of the video, but for maximal hurts watch the whole thing.  The whiplash between sweet and awful is just...ugh.  I can't even.

There are a few sucky ends for romances. Warden Blackwall and Divine Cass aren't great from what I've read. Also, the bad end for Cullen made me realise just how much that man has grown on me. Once upon a time I wouldn't have cared. But now? Ouch.

Loved watching my one armed Lavellan come strolling in, slam the book down and tell them she was done, then stroll back out again.

My male will do the same but with a lot less oomph. He's become soft in his old age.

 

 

I did not sleep well so I have not awoken with my thoughts all together. I am a sleepy mess and I can't stop thinking too much about everything from this damn game. But its great to come here and see the same thoughts being put up by you guys, in a much more coherent manner than I can manage at any time soon.

 

I do have some non-Solas points to make though, because it was nice that some characters didn't send me into a Hellspiral

Always my most loved DA2 character but in DAI I didn't love him as much because he was (understandably) not as light hearted.

But he is Hands Down my favourite guy in the reunion chats at the start of Trespasser. Viscount Tethras. Awesome. 

Also making you a Comt/Comtesse, giving you that key and as someone who saved Clan Lavellan - making an alliance with the ones at Wycome so they have some political muscle.

YES VARRIC. WHAT A BRO.

 

Sera as well, who has never been great at seeing eye to eye with my very elfy Lavellan. She seemed to really care what happened to her, made her a Red Jenny and got her boo (Love that Dagna and her get together) to make an epic crossbow hand for her.

 

Cassandra is close with both my Lavellan's but there is something about her friendship with my male one that makes me smile. She's divine for him, and I love the smile she gives when my guy called her adorable for believing Varric's proposal story   oh Cass

 

Because of the banter bug I spent hours standing around with IB and Dorian on my team to try and get their romance to start. I was never a fan of the idea but I decided I wanted to try it anyway. This DLC made that time well spent. They're really sweet together and their end panels are lovely. Slightly envious that it might turn out better for them then it does with my male quizzy, but I'll see when I get there. Also, warmed my heart with the panel that said Dorian kept in frequent contact with my female quizzy. I always knew he loved her more than Solas did. Hmph! 

 

Spirit Cole bringing in a Zither cameo was THE BEST. Although something about spirit Cole makes me kind of sad. His end panel definitely wasn't bad though, so I don't know why I get that feeling..

.. But human Cole is not starting well. Eep. I still find it weird he's dating. I'll see what it's like as I go on.

Long post because I just backtracked all of your night spam

 

Case and point.

 

Masculine and "Badass" (even if morally degenerate) = good.

 

Perceived softer, gentler, more vulnerable (like historically oppressed slaves) = bad.

 

 

I also have a theory that modern fantasy elves are generally dislike hated because they threaten people's perceptions of humanity. If elves are shown to be morally equal or superior to humans, it threatens a commonly held belief that humans are so freaking awesome that we're the best race ever, both in the real world and any fictional world, so they automatically hate elves or pick the elves' faults apart to reassure themselves that humanity is still the best.

 

I think a lot of the hatred of Thedas elves also comes from suppressed guilt. Yes, Thedas elves are oppressed victims, but humans are the oppressors. Admitting that the elves deserve better means admitting that humanity did wrong (and that there's something fundamentally flawed with humans that we oppressed and destroy everything we can't control), so it's easier to assure themselves that elves suck, elves deserve their fate, elves did the same to each other, elves would do the same in human shoes, etc. etc.

 

I mean, given some of the revelations in The Masked Empire and Dragon Age Inquisition alone, it's amazing how many people jump to say, "See? The elves oppressed each other, so that makes it okay for us to oppress them!"

 

Totally agreeing with everything said there. It's funny, but in a very sad way, to watch.

I think there's a tendency for some people to view oppression dynamics/xenophobia as "something they brought on themselves". It's easier, in a way, to see it like that, because it makes for a much less saddening picture. You can overlook the systematic power difference between factions and just handwave it as something that could easily be fixed if they just tried hard and believed in themselves!! 

 

It's there in-universe too- just look at how Mother Giselle talks about the Dales. She frames it as "oh, both sides were flawed," sort of argument. That is true in theory, but when the Chantry's "flaws" lead to it accumulating territory and wealth and knowledge, and the Dalish's flaws lead to them living hand-to-mouth in the deep woods, with no record of their culture, there's clearly an imbalance. There is literally no peaceful or easy way for them to regain any kind of power.

 

I really like the DA version of elves. They feel much more nuanced and complex than stereotypical poncy high elves. They struggle to deal with the collapse of their civilization in different ways- some of them are bitter, some just want to assimilate completely. It's relatable for a lot of people, I suppose. 

 

+1 to all of this too. And totally applicable in real life too, when you look a bit into sexism, racism, and any kind of oppression, really.

 

I want to remain optimistic. Is team optimism still a thing?

 

As long as I live, it will ALWAYS be a thing.

"Broken" is the perfect way to put it. It's completely broken, the way I see it. And though it is Solas' fault, he is the only person that can fix what he has done. I'd rather it be fixed by him, than never fixed at all.

 

 

Agreeing there. Anyone saying Thedas is fine as it is and should preserved obviously wants to remain blind to what it actually looks like.

I suppose I have a decent memory and I am sure some of you here do too.

 

Remember back in the old post DAO days, where everyone hated Loghain Mac Tir for doing the crap he did ? Yeah I remember that time quite well.

 

Remember how many of Loghain's haters were converted and sympathized with him when The Stolen Throne came out ? Yeah I remember that well too.

 

Remember how quite a few people are okay with sparing the Architect ? I remember those moments.

 

Remember how these same people decided that they hate the Architect and want to kill him after The Calling ? I remember those too.

 

With regards to Solas, I will say this...

I am willing to bet good money on the fact that if someone at Bioware published a well written novel detailing the time of ancient Elvhenan, what was it like, what happened, what were the stakes and why Solas had to create the Veil and there was little alternative...Many would either start loving Solas back or sympathize with him instead of blindly hating him now...

 

I am not saying I support the Wolfgod Egghead, I don't but blindly hating him without any context is ridiculous. As for his plans to tear down the Veil, I think it will backfire like it always has. He will inadvertently cause Titans to wake up, cause Great Dragons to regain sentience, release some or all of the Evanuris by accident on top of killing lots of people...But blind hatred of him is foolish...Tis' better to try to talk him out of it or to try and depower him or try and lock him away or send him somewhere else using Time Magic...

 

Killing Solas will not stop the problem or solve anything. For one, Solas can be as powerful as the Evanuris and the Evanuris do not die so easily. Neither will Solas. Secondly, Solas' plans can always be carried out by someone else, preferably another Ancient Elf who is his agent. Yes his agent might not have Solas' power but as we saw from In Your Heart Shall Burn, you do not really need a single individual with the power. You can draw from multiple power sources to obtain sufficient power for your goals.

 

To effectively stop Solas, you will have to kill him and every ancient Elf that exists in Thedas. That amounts to genocide and makes us no different than he is.

 

In the movie Justice League The Flashpoint Paradox, Nora's Allen who is Flash's mother says this in the beginning of the animated movie:- "...when I was a little girl, Grandma taught me a prayer: Accept the things you cannot change. Have the courage to change the things you can... and have the wisdom to know the difference."

 

That is the lesson Solas needs to ultimately learn. He cannot change anything and everything without serious consequences, especially unexpected consequences

 

Humans really do have short memories and fickle stances, don't we ?

 

Agreeing with everything there, and yes, humans are strange creatures that keep insisting they know always best, while they mostly never know enough to begin with. And they keep trusting their brains and memories as the ultimate ****, but those are so fallible to begin with, it's a joke.

Disband. I'm like Solas, I don't tend to trust big organizations, and believe they're easily corrupted and can morph into something worse than what they were created to fight against. And she's also done with Thedas crap, and having to publicly and officially deal with figures of authority that are most of the time insufferable to deal with, and ungrateful as hell. She'll do this on her own, she doesn't need anyone else but people she really trust.

I so agree with every single thing you put in words there. Things are always more complicated than they are, and I'd like to see people wanting to kill Solas for resetting the Timeline, wanting to kill their Inquisitor for having done the exact same thing in Hushed Whispers. How the Inquisitor gets away with it, but not Solas? And no, I won't accept the "it's just one year" argument, because that means you're putting a value on lives, and I ethically can't accept that train of thought.

My Inquisitor disbanded the inquisition. While she wants the chance to talk Solas down, until that happens he's the enemy. Solas has shown at numerous instances that he's very good at attacking large power structures. The last thing she'd want to do is give him another advantage when he's practically sitting on an endless trove of them. 

 

It really makes me want to redo my file though. Leliana as murderpope is great, but I don't have a lot of faith in her really being able to help out with the Inquisitor while still being pope. Hopefully next time around I'll get Vivienne.
