get to play both our Inquisitor and a new protagonist? You know, switch back and forth between them during missions? It could be an option. And honestly, I wouldn't mind that.

I would love a dual protagonist game! Especially now our Inquisitor can wield a variety of amazing prosthetic weaponry : ) In my head, I see the Inquisitor (accompanied by best Dorian and a Mabari) doing super important and difficult search for Solas type things, while the new protag does Lavellan's bidding in Tevinter, trying to find more info about his plans etc.

Although honestly I'm fine with a new protag, I do believe that the Inquisitor must be present for the final confrontation with Solas at least. It would be so weird and awkward if the new gal turned up for the fight/pleasedon'tdothis talk with a 'Hi! You don't know me, but I'm here to tell you to knock it off and oh btw I have a message from your girlfriend ...' No. Has to be Quiz, especially in a romanced Lavellan's case.

 
 

On Inquisitor, Solas, Corypheus, Ameridan & the World

Something that remained with me after finishing this DLC are Morrigan's words. In the epilogue Morrigan says, "’Tis said that Corypheus woke after his long slumber and found the world gone awry."
 
In the final discussion with Solas he says that when he woke up a year before the explosion at the Conclave it was like everyone was Tranquil. He's determined to bring back existence as he remembers it, no matter the cost.
 
This is very similar to the next line in the initial epilogue narrated by Morrigan, "He fought to bring back those days of magic and shadow, to raise himself as a god, and set things right."
 
However, I think possibly the most apt parallels is one you can draw with yourself: Your Inquisitor's reaction to In Hushed Whispers is perhaps the most telling.
 
When your Inquisitor are sent into the future, you see a world in total chaos and misery. At any point, did you think to yourself, "Maybe I should look into this more, and not try to erase this future?"
 
Erasing this future means destroying anyone who was born. Erasing bad things, of course, but good things, too, even if they seem few. There must be some good things that were present in that world. Perhaps we could have helped the resistance fight the Elder One and take him down instead of erasing the timeline.
 
However, you and Dorian never stop and consider that you should salvage this world or save it. This world is abhorrent to you. A total catastrophe, and failing abomination. Of course you are going to restore the world you knew. Whatever the flaws of your own world, it is surely better than what you see? Dorian even repeats this to character such as Leliana who replied that this world was real to them regardless of what you say.
 
There are parallels with Corypheus, yes, but Corypheus, at least, woke to a world that was not too altered. Corypheus lived in a time with the Veil. On the other hand, you entered into and Solas woke to a world that is torn apart from the one both of you respectively knew.
 
Let us take this further. What if you were sent 20 years in the future? 200? 2000 ? The people kicking around then, all corrupted by Red Lyrium, even the children. The people live as long as 20 or 30. All slaves to Corypheus unless you are magister, a human and a citizen of Tevinter.
 
Yet they insist, no, their world is fine. It is all good. Though, you know that there was a world that you can return that was so much better. These people, despite being miserable, corrupted slaves, they see value in themselves. Do you erase them anyway? Or do you let this world continue as it goes? That is the world Solas woke up to.
 
Solas woke up to a world with little magic...A world where Titans slept, Dwarves are sundered, Great Dragons are mere beasts, Elves are weak shadows of themselves...A world where Spirits are feared, where there is massive conflict every 5 to 10 years, where mages are locked up in a tower...A world where there exists philosophies such as the Qun and a world that still practices slavery, especially of Elves...
 
To Solas, this world must have appeared to be like how our Inquisitors saw the future world in the quest In Hushed Whispers. The Inquisitors proceeds to undo it within an instant whereas Solas at least try to make sense of it.
 
In Solas' position, I think you know what most of us would choose.The more I think about it, the more I understand where Solas' and Corypheus' are coming from. I cannot hate them. I can dislike them out of a sense of self preservation but I would pity them as well.
 
The worst part is that the Inquisitor, in game, does what Solas and Corypheus do, albeit on a smaller scale. We traveled to the future, found a world that is abhorrent to us and sought to unmake it. We did so without hesitation, without doubt, without question and without any second thought to the people in that world. In fact, I think only Ameridan was the only person from the past who was okay with the future world.
 
The reality is that those who are calling for Solas' deaths and those who hate him are hypocrites, doubly so if they did the quest In Hushed Whispers. Upon further reflection, I do not want to kill Solas. I would stop him and only resort to killing him if there is no other choice. For the simple reason the Inquisitor is no different than Solas.
 
Personally, even I would do what Solas, Corypheus and Inquisitor did if I were put in their position. Without remorse, without hesitation and without fail. I would restore the world to what I knew unless if this alternate world is significantly superior in some way.

I've been out of likes for far too long. I want to like so many posts, but can't.

 

Some thoughts after a night's sleep.

I feel like I've been knifed in the heart. I understand now that my initial good mood was partly caused by the fact that I *may* have drunk an entire bottle of wine when playing the DLC.

I can relate to this so well. I had an inkling he would be trying to restore the elves, just in a slightly less destructive fashion, maybe conquering back the Dales or something... I don't know, maybe I just didn't want to see it.

 

But now I just keep going back to all these little moments in game that suddenly don't mean what I thought they meant. 

• That screenshot someone posted just a couple of days ago of Solas kneeling to help a refugee at the Crossroads.
• Solas saying how he will remember the people when it is all over and how they courageously fought against the tide.
• "It would be kinder in the long run."
• Remembering that one mission in the Emerald Graves where Inky scattered somebody's ashes and Solas said, "That was a kind thing you did."
• All this talk about how he values wisdom.

All this time... He was just trying to give everyone a moment of peace before destroying them. The thought still horrifies me. 

 

Dread Wolf's pretty accurate for him, I think.

I also remembered how he said it would all become clear after Corypheus was defeated. It would all become clear, because he'd destroy you.. along with everyone else. I don't see how anyone could come out of a mindstate like this.

Ah yes. Vir Hellspiral. I'm apparently stuck in the same cycle. Everything was fine yesterday, but listening to the Dread Wolf theme made me tear up a little, twisting the knife already lodged deep inside my chest. Why I keep listening to it, is a mystery. I also plan on replaying the scene with Solas in the evening and trying to experience every dialogue option. It hurts so gooood.

Can anyone actually imagine a scenario in which Solas actually does bring down the Veil? In terms of how Bioware could in any way continue making DA games for that world state? I've been seeing people elsewhere referring back to Sandal's prophecy about all the magic coming back, and Flemeth talking about the inevitable plummet into the abyss... they can't both be wrong!!

As many have already said, the Veil will probably come down and I base my opinion entirely on Sandal's prophecy. It was put into DA2 by Gaider to creep people out with something he knew would be happening later in the series.

 

As what will happen when we confront Solas in the next(?) game, I still believe it would be possible to save him from himself, but I think he'll die either way. Maybe a friend/LI would have the option to hold him while he dies. He'd realize he finally did something right (somehow) and die happy. If a scene like this came to pass, the Solavellan romance would become the most epic video game romance of all time in my book.

I don't see a future where both he and Lavellan would be alive and he'd learn to live in the new reality. His story just feels like he has to die.

The ship is sinking, but it's not wholly underwater yet so I'm staying. I'm at a point where I can't romance anyone else, but can't replay DAI either, because listening to him nerd out, make friends and love frilly cakes while plotting to terminate everyone, is still too painful.

 

I've also been thinking that maybe the devs made him have such horrible goals so it'd be less painful to kill him in the end, because redemption wouldn't be an option. I seriously hope this is not the case.

 

When the devs were asked about the Solavellan romance in Trespasser, they should've answered with a

Sidenote: Solas' plan made made me think of the Order of Fiery Promise who also wanted to end the world so it would be reborn as a paradise.

Yeah, sure, but couple that with the fact the game strangely insists on showing you that time magic does exist, and also gives you hint on how it works... I mean, it makes more sense to me right now, but I remain open to other interpretations.

I won't refute you idea as I'm open to interpretations as well, but just as an idea, unless there is concrete proof of it somewhere in the game. The point of time travel quest though, as well as templars quest, more than anything else was to show the consequences of what will happen if the Inquisitor fails and what will happen if he succeeds. And why when the Fade merged with the real world in that alternative future Solas was with the Inquisitor to stop it? He could have just stopped the Inquisitor instead, and do his time magic. But he didn't. So I don't think we should read too deep into this. Also, remember Sandal's prophecy about tearing down the Veil and all magic coming back - nothing about time travel, but lots about simple merging.

P.S. Also, thanks to Dean_the_Young in another thread I now too remember that it was stated in that quest that time travel magic couldn't go beyond the time of the Breach. So, that another point to consider.

There's also a couple of concerns I got reminded of when sifting through my screenshot folder to find my new treasures. Regarding some of the things we discover throughout the DLC:

Did anyone else noticed the discarded elfy balls lying outside the Library? Here Dorian stands on one with much class:

This, among other things, have led me to believe that the elven ruins that were destroyed by the veil are the remnants of Arlathan perhaps. When the veil is broken, are these ruins going to magically be made all better?

Also, Solas is going to free his people. Okay. But, can anyone help me understand from where? If they are simply behind the Eluvians, he could do that without bringing down the veil. If they are in the Fade, why didn't we see them when we were there? Why is there no mention of any elf or dreamer ever dreaming about one of them? Or is there and I just don't know it? If Coryphelus managed to make it all the way to the black/gold city, why didn't he or any of his magister buddies encounter them somewhere?

In the deep roads beyond the eluvian. I had spirit Cole with me, and he said; "They're all singing. Coffers, coffins, corpses that aren't dead. A song crying out in the dark". (Thanks to FernRain for the actual quote) So, I wonder who could be sleeping in those boxes.

Current theory being, he wants to tear down the Veil in order to be able to perform time magic on the whole world. We see time magic being performed twice during DA:I, and both involved a tear in the veil. He also implied it in Trespasser, though I can't get my hands on the precise quote.

 

I, for one, am not convinced.

Liz makes an interesting therory, and that could very well be his goal but I'm not yet convinced that his ultimate plan is time-travel. But time-travel makes my head hurt, so maybe I'm projecting.

How did Solas put the veil up to begin with? What's it made of? Where'd it come from? Was he more powerful than the rest of the pantheon combined? How come they can't get through? I'd assume being locked in the fade would only increase their magical abilities. How does the fade neuter them? I don't know what I have to do to meet these people but I WANT TO ASAP. 

 

Anyway, where did Solas find that kind of magic? What kind of a mage is he? I'm concerned about all of this. I have a lot of questions. Are the forgotten ones the old gods, then? Dragons that could speak/talk? Elves that turned into dragons in magical experiments? What about the maker?? I don't understand why he can't just take the veil down without killing everyone. In the time-travel future, people were still alive and the veil was down. They were all infected with Red Lyrium of course, but that's Coryfish's doing- surely Solas could do it without all that fuss, right? If he's so damn powerful to put up the veil to begin with.

I like to imagine that if my elfy's hand didn't hurt like hell and wasn't actually killing her, she'd have grabbed him and tried to literally shake some sense into his endearingly bald headed self. I really needed a slightly more motivated response there.

Now that I've had some sleep, and gotten some chores done, I've given more thought to the future of the franchise. I'm probably not the first to mention this stuff, but it's a bit difficult to keep track of what's going on in this thread at the moment, especially when most posts are under a clicky thing. Not that I'm complaining about that. Really happy everyone is respecting the spoiler free zone. It's just more evidence that Team Solas is truly the best part of this community.

So, more thoughts on the future:

I recall it being mentioned somewhere, ages ago, that Dragon Age will be a 5 game series. I conveniently don't remember where of course, but I seem to recall it being at least a somewhat official source. If that's true and whatever Solas is doing brings about the end of the era, then our final confrontation with him won't take place in the next game.

I imagine DA4 will be dealing with Qunari and changing the Imperium for better or worse while the threat of world's end lingers in the back of our minds.

If that is the case, we could be playing a new agent of the Divine Inquisition or the not-inquisition. I'm calling my not-Inquisition the Calamity Five. Starring the undercover Divine (Cass), Leliana, Harding, Tiger Festival and an unknown agent, we'd double as a girl band that gets ridiculously famous thanks to the Inquisitor's vocals and the Divine's killer enchanted guitar solos. We'd go to Tevinter under the pretense of a world tour while we spend our free time righting wrongs and seeking Solas.

Or you know, something like that anyway. :3

So, I could see the inquisitor being at least an option for the next protagonist. I really hope she is. And it makes me grumpy when people insist that it absolutely can't happen that way. I was under the impression that Hawke was originally going to be the Inquisitor? Doesn't that mean they were considering the idea of a carry-over protagonist already?

At the very least I need her to be there at the end. Whether it's in DA4 or 5. And she better not be an NPC with scripted dialogue. If she shows up, give me back the wheel. The Hawke they presented in DAI felt like such a huge deviation from the one I played. It makes it that much easier to leave her in the fade every playthrough. She's just not my Hawke.

Come what may, I need Tiger Festival to face Solas in the end and I need her to be mine. Nothing else will do.

That entire scene was very intense. I recently watched a version that was not friends with Solas and he was so cold! It was just not the same intensity. I truthfully hope they decide to carry over Lavellan. I believe the "Inquisition's" story is over, but not hers. I definitely think we will heading off to Tevinter! I am one of those people who also adore Dorian. So, hopefully he will be returning as a party member. One day I will type up my theory on everything after doing some decent lore mongering. I do agree with you about it being only acceptable if I am in control of Lavellan when/if she ever gets to confront Solas.

Here's what I put on reddit a few weeks ago and oh my word was some of it right. Like the veil destroying the world by fire o.o. Was Fen'harel using them?

So-called "astrariums" are relics from an order of pre-Andrastian magisters who believed in the destruction of the Magisterium and wanted to return to an earlier period where dreamers ruled. Many of these relics were sought out by Andrastrian cultists (the Order of Fiery Promise in particular) in the Divine Age and destroyed. Why? Because they believed the astrariums held together the veil, and that destroying them would destroy the world. The Order of Fiery Promise decreed that not only was the end of the world nigh, it was necessary; Thedas must be cleansed with fire and reborn as a paradise. They devoted themselves utterly to seeing this come about, whether they ever drew closer to their goal is unknown.

In the Western Approach are three astrariums:
•Toth: old god, dragon of fire. Represented as a flaming orb or a man aflame.
•Satinalis: Satina (the moon), or Satinalia (the holiday). Modernly depicted as the Celebrant (a man playing a lyre), previously depicted as Mortemalis (a warrior holding aloft a head, usually of an elf).
•Fenrir: white wolf, assumed supplanted from Fen'harel; or, a neromenian tale that claims a wolf escaped hunters by fleeing into the sky.

Unlock these three constellations and an old Tevinter treasure room is revealed. Inside? One of the artifacts of Solas' people. Activate it to "strengthen the veil".

Things on my mind:
•Do the three constellations in each area relate to each other?
•The Order of Fiery Promise has a strange obsession with the Seekers and Chantry (the latter symbolized as the sun),
•They think the Seekers stole their place,
•They keep coming back from extinction after being wiped out by the Inquisition throughout the ages,
•They've hunted the dreamers' relics,
•They believe destroying the veil will destroy the world,
•They want Thedas to be cleansed with fire in it's rebirth,
•Will removing the veil cause some sort of fiery catastrophic event?

Lastly, a theory:
•Will removing the veil set Elgar'nan, Eldest of the Sun, free from Fen'harel's prison so he can burn the ground under his gaze?

My mind is still in a jumble and I'm not good at explaining things, but I had a few thoughts over night : 

 

For one, I think Skyhold had a huge part to play when Solas raised the veil. The elven name means something like "holding the sky up", which sounds suspiciously like something either Solas or Cole (I'm at work and can't do the appropriate research to get the exact quote. if someone could help me I'd appreciate a great deal!) said. It's suspicious as heck in any case.

 

Also, I wonder if the forgotten ones are actually another faction of enavuris that lost a war. It's been posited that the war that is talked about when the enavuris being considered gods came up was with the Titans, but I'm not convinced. The titans, or "pillars of the Earth" are said to have been "hunted", which doesn't quite sound like a war to me. I think the enavuris actually fought each other, at a time where the forgotten ones were just another faction, and when the main group (Elgar'nan and al. apart from Ghilnan'nain who seem to come to her position later on) won, they banished the losers somewhere in the "void" (no idea what the void is still) to be crossed out from history altogether. Thus, the forgotten ones.

I know what you mean about Skyhold. A part of me thinks it's where the veil was created but then I think, if it were that long ago why would the elves be in the Frostback mountains? Nonetheless, the full Skyhold codex hints at it with things like "the veil is old here". Then there's the spirits comments at the library in trespasser talking about something where the sky is held back (similar to Skyhold's Elven name).

 

Also doesn't Renn from the deeproads make a comment about Skyhold? It had something to do with the earth holding onto the fortress or something like that.

You can get past the guardian spirits in the first area if you have the well. Don't know if there's anything else.

Liz makes an interesting therory, and that could very well be his goal but I'm not yet convinced that his ultimate plan is time-travel. But time-travel makes my head hurt, so maybe I'm projecting.

How did Solas put the veil up to begin with? What's it made of? Where'd it come from? Was he more powerful than the rest of the pantheon combined? How come they can't get through? I'd assume being locked in the fade would only increase their magical abilities. How does the fade neuter them? I don't know what I have to do to meet these people but I WANT TO ASAP. 
 
Anyway, where did Solas find that kind of magic? What kind of a mage is he? I'm concerned about all of this. I have a lot of questions. Are the forgotten ones the old gods, then? Dragons that could speak/talk? Elves that turned into dragons in magical experiments? What about the maker?? I don't understand why he can't just take the veil down without killing everyone. In the time-travel future, people were still alive and the veil was down. They were all infected with Red Lyrium of course, but that's Coryfish's doing- surely Solas could do it without all that fuss, right? If he's so damn powerful to put up the veil to begin with. 
 
I have so many feelings. Much questions. Many feelings.
 

Regarding the How and why bits, I dunno if it has to be spoilered since its not directly tied to the dlc or anything, but just in case:

What if the creation of the veil sundered the ancient elves from themselves. Not just their puffed up god-like ones, but the nobility as well. Their spirits became caught up and trapped in the fade and their bodies fell, sleeping. It's been mentioned that a spirit loses its purpose when it is forcibly pulled through the veil. Might this have happened to them? Did they forget what they are? Who they used to be? As the veil grows weaker, and gets damaged more and more by the mages seeking power all over the world, maybe the gap between body, mind, and spirit is closing up for the ancients. They're starting to remember who they are and what happened, but they're also still asleep.

As for the other theory:

I can see him considering time magic to fix things. If he needs his full power and the aid of spirit-y friends to cast time magic, it also makes sense that a veil-less world would allow him to do that. He said he walks a path of death, no? Well, how else is he going to make it so that none of this ever happened? How else to completely restore what was? He has to go back in time and kill himself before he put the veil up in the first place.

That would also be viable plan for escaping the present-day wrath of his peers once they return.

Theoretically he could usurp his former place and change the course of his ancient rebellion. But he has to know that isn't going to work out. Especially without a paradox machine to take care of all the wibbly wobbly consequences. Unless of course the veil is a paradox machine. Then destroying it would reset time itself anyway and we're completely screwed.

Okay, I'm done with Doctor Who references for now. But, I think time travel thing is as likely as anything else. I'm undecided which way to lean however.

My mind is still in a jumble and I'm not good at explaining things, but I had a few thoughts over night : 

 

For one, I think Skyhold had a huge part to play when Solas raised the veil. The elven name means something like "holding the sky up", which sounds suspiciously like something either Solas or Cole (I'm at work and can't do the appropriate research to get the exact quote. if someone could help me I'd appreciate a great deal!) said. It's suspicious as heck in any case.

 

Also, I wonder if the forgotten ones are actually another faction of enavuris that lost of a war. It's been posited that the war that is talked about when the enavuris being considered gods came up what with the Titans, but I'm not convinced. The titans, or "pillars of the Earth" are said to have been "hunted", which doesn't quite sound like a war to me. I think the enavuris actually founght each other, at a time where the forgotten ones were just another faction, and when the main group (Elgar'nan and al. apart from Ghilnan'nain who seem to come to her position later on) won, they banished the losers somewhere in the "void" (no idea what the void is still) to be crossed out from history altogether. Thus, the forgotten ones.

Couldn't the war be between the Elves and the Dwarves- and the forgotten ones are the Gods of the Dwarves, or the equivalent of what the Elven Pantheon are? Lets say the "dwarven gods" lost the war, (started because they were trying to protect the titans and the lyrium from the elves that wanted to use/abuse it), and the result was that the dwarves got cut off somehow from the titans and the lyrium.  The veil went up by Solas to protect the elves and to keep the two warring factions apart which would have resulted in...idk. Maybe he was trying to keep the elven gods away from all that lyrium supply, that's what they wanted to get even more powerful? Maybe that was the "much worse" option he spoke of. Obviously I haven't worked out the details here. lol

Think of it was being part of Solas' struggle between wanting to bring back his world, and live in this one.  Use it to remind him that he's a good person and he has friends here.

I have no doubt there was always a Solas redemption path planned.  The devs have been open about the fact that they worked hard to make it clear that Solas wasn't Evily McEvil, and even included a romance with him to make him more tragic.  They want fans to understand why he wants to do what he's doing, and that it's not just a 'lol, destroy the world' plot.   They did all this and gave everyone who was a friend or a lover the chance to save him from himself.

Chose the "we'll keep the peace" option to work under the Divine. I didn't really like any of the choices but with a softened Leliana my Divine, I trust her and her policies and so that became that.
