But before this DLC, the common thread of thought was that Mythal and most of the pantheon were 'cool'. Maybe one betrayer, who allied with the Forgotten Ones. Now, with this DLC... it painted all the Pantheon except for Mythal in a bad light. Solas kind of implied she was the only one who cared for her people. Previously, a theory was that the veil was formed to seal the Forgotten Ones away, and to keep the Pantheon protected (from blight, or whatever). So the Forgotten Ones were maybe not the dark scary things we thought they were. Or maybe Solas only used them to further his end. It's unclear.  o.o

Also, small thing:  I hope people noticed that the paintings of halla were scarier in Trespasser than they are in previous Inquisition wall paintings

Well, I suppose all the elves who are actually working for him and maybe are even aware what he's planning may also feel hurt if they feel like he sacrificed everything - including them - for a woman he loved. He obviously loves Lavellan deeply, but he won't sacrifice the elvhen people just for his or her personal happiness. It would be way too selfish.

 

Also - would your Lavellan agree to this? If, say, Solas managed to just save her, or sacrificed many elves just to be with her? I don't think mine would ever be comfortable with this.

I'm not under the impression that modern elves are going to survive the removal of the veil. here are some quotes from the conversation:

 

"My people fell for what I did to strike the Evanuris down, but still some hope remains for restoration" 

Modern elves are STILL not his people. Over and over Solas makes this clear. 

 

"I will save the elven people even if it means this world must die"

Are modern elves not part of THIS world?

 

If corypheus hadn't meddled: "I would have entered the fade, using the mark you now bear. Then I would have torn down the veil. As this world burned in the raw chaos, I would have restored the world of my time... the time of the elves."

Still not you. Elves of this time are tranquil. 

 

Most damning of all: "We aren't people to you?" "Not at first. You showed me that I was wrong... again. That does not make what must come next any easier."

Why would he be working so hard to save people he didn't consider people? Pre-corypheus, clearly he wasn't doing this for the benefit of the modern elves. The entire point of that exchange was him telling you that DESPITE starting to see modern people as full people, he intends to go through with his plan anyway. 

 

"Why bother disrupting the Qunari plot, if you're going to destroy the world regardless?" "I take no joy in what I must do. Until that day comes, I would see [people] free of the Qun. If they must die, I would rather they die in comfort."

...I don't know how he could make this clearer. EVERYBODY is going to die.

Couldn't catch up on all the stuff I missed while I was sleeping, but I wanted to quickly comment on this!

My mind is still in a jumble and I'm not good at explaining things, but I had a few thoughts over night : 

 

For one, I think Skyhold had a huge part to play when Solas raised the veil. The elven name means something like "holding the sky up", which sounds suspiciously like something either Solas or Cole (I'm at work and can't do the appropriate research to get the exact quote. if someone could help me I'd appreciate a great deal!) said. It's suspicious as heck in any case.

 

Also, I wonder if the forgotten ones are actually another faction of enavuris that lost a war. It's been posited that the war that is talked about when the enavuris being considered gods came up was with the Titans, but I'm not convinced. The titans, or "pillars of the Earth" are said to have been "hunted", which doesn't quite sound like a war to me. I think the enavuris actually fought each other, at a time where the forgotten ones were just another faction, and when the main group (Elgar'nan and al. apart from Ghilnan'nain who seem to come to her position later on) won, they banished the losers somewhere in the "void" (no idea what the void is still) to be crossed out from history altogether. Thus, the forgotten ones.

Couldn't the war be between the Elves and the Dwarves- and the forgotten ones are the Gods of the Dwarves, or the equivalent of what the Elven Pantheon are? Lets say the "dwarven gods" lost the war, (started because they were trying to protect the titans and the lyrium from the elves that wanted to use/abuse it), and the result was that the dwarves got cut off somehow from the titans and the lyrium.  The veil went up by Solas to protect the elves and to keep the two warring factions apart which would have resulted in...idk. Maybe he was trying to keep the elven gods away from all that lyrium supply, that's what they wanted to get even more powerful? Maybe that was the "much worse" option he spoke of. Obviously I haven't worked out the details here. lol

I interpreted it as the Evanuris fighting a war against the Titans, or the dwarves, or whatever. Because of Cole's comments about templars, reaching for that "other thing", I've started to think of Fade magic ("The air") and Titan magic/lyrium/templar "magic" ("The earth") as two opposing forces. Warring magics, always in opposition. Cole describes templars as "heavy with forgotten songs". He says "the lyrium helps, but they always want to connect to something older. Bigger than they are. That's why they block magic. They reach for that other thing, and magic has no room to come in."

 

Now that I think about it, maybe Solas got some idea about how the create the Veil by studying how "Titan magic" works. Maybe that's why he chose Skyhold as a base of operations for his ritual - like Renn said, the earth holds onto the stones, or something.

 

There's a codex entry in Vir Dirthara about the Evanuris banishing Xebenkeck (the Forbidden One Hawke can fight in DAII) and "her ilk" from their lands because they "cast aside form to flee to where the Earth could not reach" and abandoned the People. That same codex describes "the Earth that is our right".

I think the Forbidden Ones (the demons that first taught blood magic to mortals) are Forgotten Ones, who were once powerful mages, exiled by the Evanuris. Locked away from the Earth, somehow, even before the creation of the Veil? Perhaps tying into the origin of the Blight. The Evanuris lay claim to the Earth after the war against the Titans was won.

oh no, I've been saying the pantheon were terrible since I saw the Solas kills Flemythal scene after I finished DAI in November. the lore on them in ToM depicts them as such for a lot of them, and Solas' comments on them during DAI. it was very clear just from the dai basegame.

 

even mythal is painted in a semibad light in the dlc. we know she fought titans and stuff. and even mythal is depicted as kinda-bad in dai as well.

I think it's incredibly important in a world where we have a villain who is dissociated from reality - struggles seeing those around him as "real" because his perception of time or this period of time is unique to him. And the same applies to Mythal and even our protagonists. They each have these very personal ways of seeing the context of their lives and the world they're in.

Of course your protagonist doesn't want their world destroyed. It's all they've known!

Of course Mythal feels as if she was betrayed unjustly! All she sees is her choices and her intent.

Of course Solas struggles with the reality of destroying 4k years worth of history, civilization, life, art, etc! But to him this is a mistake. One he plans to rectify as soon as he can with as little upset to the "mistake" itself. Aka you and your world. Before he wipes it in favor of the world he liked best.

 

So really, each of these people see themselves as just. As right. And this is going to be so deliciously dramatic.

I'm wondering that as well. I mean, I am sure Solas has his reasons for doing what he did, but he has always been clouded by his own, personal views of how things should be. What if someone like June just tagged along because he didn't knew any better? What if some of the Evanuris actively sought for ways to better the world themselves and used their slaves to further those plans? Because, you know, as much as Solas believes he is for freedom deluxe~ he is currently actively building an army out of modern elves. Sure, he doesn't see them as PEOPLE, but maybe that's just how the Evanuris saw their slaves? If something like that would be true, then that would make Solas into a really narrow-minded person who, though he wants the best for his people, is no better than the rest of the old elven gods.

I think the fact Lavellan can hear him say such a cold thing to her, in spite of obvious deep love, and still believe she has a chance to help him, stop him, and save him from himself...well that is a testament to her character.

 

 

Exactly. I'm more in love with my Lavellan than ever, and she started as the let's-take-the-opposite-choices playthrough.

the giant golden hand in the Crossroads? We, um, were trying to finish a section in the Crossroads before dinner, so I didn't get to inspect it as closely as I wanted to...but if memory serves, there was a giant golden hand close to Dirthamen/Thelm mosaics.
For awhile in the early section of the Crossroads, I was shocked thinking that Madrar's Triple Threat Theory might be correct, since there were a surprising number of Dirthamen mosaics in the Wolf's Refuge.

I did my first time through it, mostly because I couldn't figure out how to get rid of that cart. No different outcome other than a dead dragon and the Viddasala mocking you for letting an innocent creature die.
