he references the dread wolf take you curse and she can say 'and so he did' and hes like 'i would not lay with you under false pretenses' but the specific phrasing and implications are ambiguous, is the tl;dr

 

and then fandom wise, some (only some) gloated about how it was now canon that they didn't, which upset some the sexual people, and then some of other sexual-side fanses biggest problem with the dlc was that they didn't get to bang and it all just added fuel to the fire and yea

I just wanna add, I know that for some people sexuality is a hugely important part of their general identity, and one that defines the way that they see and experience the world - which is perfectly fine, valid, and fair. For others, like yourself, it's less important, and many of those people feel that a focus on sexuality can be limiting - which is also fine, of course!

 

I just thought I'd point this difference in opinion out because, well, I find the ace!Solas vs. sexual!Solas debate horribly annoying and boring, but I think it's worth understanding why people also care so much about it.

 

 

idk, I think you're right, the whole thing is massively щ（ﾟДﾟщ） inducing because it's canon that it's ambiguous and up to the reader and probably the Inquisitor in question and that's damn great. It appreciates that this game is an RPG, it involves roleplay and headcanon, whilst also accepting quite happily, yeah, Solas could be ace, go for it.

 

but I will add, like above, sexuality is really important to some people, so I can understand why people get invested in fictional character's sexualities in general, (for some people who you've banged, or loved, or both, is p. important and reassuring for them, and helps them figure out their own identity in seeing it reflected, if that makes any sense) it's just I don't think it makes any sense to get upset over it in the case of Solas.

But I'm not surprised this flared up again. I get it, truly, but don't harass the writers.

I'm also not a very sexual person, so I tend to not really care about sexuality. 

 

Idk I just like Solas' character so much that the fighting over his sex life just seems so ... unimportant compared to the big picture (especially when the canon is your decision to decide on your own)

I personally interpret the line however it fits the Lavellan that I'm currently playing. Heck yes for diversity! And a big frilly cake for Patrick Weekes.

Why would it have to be before the date of Arlathan being founded?
While I wouldn't be surprised if Arlathan was older than our starter date of 8000 years, I think it's clear from Solas's dialogue that Arlathan was around for a long-ass time before the Veil went up. And the Veil was up probably went up within 4800 years or so of Arlathan being founded in the official date given, since that's when the Old Gods began whispering to the Neromenian Dreamers from the Golden City. Fifty years before that, the Quickening is first noted on the timeline, which seems the most likely date to me.

It still happened such a long time ago that records of anything are hard to come by.  Most of the elven records it would seem were in Vir Dirthara (if I'm remembering the library's name correctly) and that was mostly destroyed and inaccessible after the Veil was created.  Then during the First Blight a lot of records were lost because so many cities were destroyed by the darkspawn.

Well, that's just it. There aren't written records. The elves records were lost in the Library when the Veil destroyed everything. Their physical records were likely destroyed by Tevinter. Humans were still tribal and likely hadn't created writing. The Memories explicitly don't go back that far, likely as much a case of editing as their culture not recording things like that when they were bonded with the Titans. The idea of the Quickening is something that may have been present before the elven enslavement by the Imperium, but either way, that view is thousands of years removed from what happened.
We have a good idea of what was going on in the Mediterranean in Roman or Greek times, for example, because we can read Roman and Greek records and compare them with archaeological digs. But Arlathan was half in the Fade, and half in the physical world, and people don't speak ancient elven, and there won't other groups making records. So it's a big mystery to people in Thedas.

I think this is hugely comparable to the ancient Library of Alexandria, which got burned down. We hugely don't know how some former civilisations in the past worked, so why should Thedas' history knowledge be any different?
