Oh gawd, you guys. I'm so glad I had this thread and the 20-odd pages to read through. I came home earlier today and found my dog dead on the floor. She wasn't old, so it was completely wtf unexpected and out of nowhere. I've been a wreck. But all the lore, debates, and duckfaced Lavellans have been great. Really. I'm so grateful for all you smart and wonderful people having good discussions. It's been the right amount of distraction.

 

Best of all? Watching low approval Solas. That is the Best. Thing. Ever. inside of a one minute conversation. I laughed so hard.

 

I am so playing through Trespasser again tomorrow.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I know what it's like to lose a pet.   /comfort

Also my two cents on how I think Solas will proceed:

I think that they have set this game up that he won't be the big baddy.  I think they will resolve him in the next game. Either mid or end game ala some of the staggered section in DA:I.  I think that death will obviously be an option(for people who didn't redeem him) but that for those of us who picked redeem it will remain an option that exists beyond death.  My bets on his starting the domino collapse that leads to something bigger and then ultimately realizing(probably through our intervention) that he's done something royally stupid.  He will then have to help defeat/stop the course of actions he put in to play.

 

I killed Anders...but that's cause he asked for it.  I don't see Solas asking for death if he realizes his mistakes.  I see him struggling the rest of his life to atone as he encouraged Blackwall/Rainier to do.

I would love for this to be the case, for Solas to redeem himself by ending up saving the world he was intending to destroy. I also agree that there are other players on the field who we don't know of yet, quite possibly worse than him.

I think Solas' ruthlessness when it comes to the modern elves that he builds up to be his army can be easily seen in his mental chess match with the Iron Bull. If it helps him win, he's willing to sacrifice everything - he's such a man of "the end justifies the means" that he just needs enough chess pieces in his plan to doom the world. If he has to sacrifice his army of modern elves in doing so, then he does it. Not because he finds joy in it, but because it is what he must do to win.

I love the chess match and how it pertains to the next game - with the Quizzy as the chess master playing against Solas, and the new protag as her 'pawn', making moves unnoticed by Fen'Harel until it's time for checkmate. But some big sacrifices may be required to get to endgame I also love the (romantic but unlikely) idea that Solas is indirectly telling us how to stop him because he wants to be stopped.

 

Possible future game scenario

Morrigan obtains Flemythals essence and goes searching for the other pieces of her. She then takes back the piece that Solas recieved (rendering him weak like he was before), enters the Fade with an army of dragons and kills the Enuvaris. Thedas remains in tact and Cole makes Solas "Forget". Lavellan gets back together with Solas while Morrythal rules the whole of Thedas.

You can even have lavellan offer to help him, but he still turns her down. 

 

He's so adamant on protecting her and her "marvelous spirit" and free-will that he even denies her help to tear down the veil. She agrees to the one thing that he probably never thought she would, and he turns her down. 

 

Honestly, I understand why, I just wish (similar to how you wish the anchor was still there) that he would've agreed. 

 

I'm pro tearing down the veil anyways. I really wish he could've let her join.

I do wonder if there's a meta-game reason for not allowing that, which is that every Inquisitor has to be in place for the next game (so either very important NPC or - please Bioware - a protagonist, possibly one of two. I agree it would have been a cool option though - I have one Lavellan who would be willing to let herself and the world burn if it meant a return to Elven Glory.

This. From what I've seen the gods very rarely agree on anything, so them unanimously deciding to off Mythal seems fishy to me. 

 

 

Same here, I feel like there's so much we still don't know about Mythal, her relation to Fen'Harel, and to other gods. I expect her (and her daughter/grandson) to be actively relevant in DA4, and maybe turn out to be a main antagonist. That would be fun!

Solas takes the entire blame for what happened to the Elvhen, he shoulders it all, when in my view he shouldn't. As far as we know, it wasn't Solas's fault that the Evanuris were slave-owning, warmongering murderers fighting with other powerful factions as ordinary elves were caught in the crossfire or used as fodder. It wasn't his fault that Mythal was murdered either (according to Abelas anyway). In the end, he was one guy lumbered with a really crappy lose/lose decision - act, and cause the deaths of millions and the probable end of civilisation as he knew it; or don't act, and by inaction cause a slightly slower death of millions and the probable end of civilisation as he knew it (and that's not even taking into account whatever new horror the Evanuris were apparently planning). Once Mythal was taken out, the decision rested entirely on him - and honestly I can't see his guilt being the lesser if he'd chosen not to act instead.

 

Clearly (by his 'action is not inherently superior to inaction' convo with a low-approval Inquisitor) he comes to regret his decision, though not enough to choose inaction when faced with a similar choice again. And I do believe that we will learn that the choice is actually similar - a burning (probable) death by veilfire, or a slower (definite) lingering death from Blight. We know that Blight is in the lyrium, we know it's in the soil, therefore infecting the lowest part of the foodchain. We know dragons carry blight (though interestingly can seem to stem its spread in their own bodies - does killing dragons somehow make blight spread faster??), so it exists at the top of the food chain too. Thedas is dying a slow death I think, and Solas doesn't see a third way, but perhaps hopes that the Inquisitor can find one?

 

I do love the parallels between his story and the Inquisitor's - obviously the stakes are higher and the scale larger for Solas, but still. The Inquisitor is seen as a divine figure and can can either embrace that (like the Evanuris) or reject it (like Solas). The Inquisitor has to make decisions (alone, ultimately) that result in the deaths of good people along with bad regardless - Ser Barris and other decent people die if you don't do the Templar quest, reasonable  mages are killed if you do. The Inquisitor's goal throughout DAI is to stop a being who declares himself a god, Solas locked away those who declared the same of themselves; quizzy goes from 'hero' to 'threat'  very quickly after Corypheus's demise, Solas goes from someone waging a 'noble struggle' to being the villain of what remains of the culture he tried to save. They both know what it's like for their 'story' to get away from them. Then of course there's the mage quest, where the Inquisitor 'rights' a 'wrong' world, much as Solas is seeking to do ..

 

Sorry, I do realise all this will have been said before, and better than I'm saying it, but damn. Trespasser has made me love the base game even more because of all this
