Another thing I find particularly sad:
SpoilerSolas takes the entire blame for what happened to the Elvhen, he shoulders it all, when in my view he shouldn't. As far as we know, it wasn't Solas's fault that the Evanuris were slave-owning, warmongering murderers fighting with other powerful factions as ordinary elves were caught in the crossfire or used as fodder. It wasn't his fault that Mythal was murdered either (according to Abelas anyway). In the end, he was one guy lumbered with a really crappy lose/lose decision - act, and cause the deaths of millions and the probable end of civilisation as he knew it; or don't act, and by inaction cause a slightly slower death of millions and the probable end of civilisation as he knew it (and that's not even taking into account whatever new horror the Evanuris were apparently planning). Once Mythal was taken out, the decision rested entirely on him - and honestly I can't see his guilt being the lesser if he'd chosen not to act instead.
Clearly (by his 'action is not inherently superior to inaction' convo with a low-approval Inquisitor) he comes to regret his decision, though not enough to choose inaction when faced with a similar choice again. And I do believe that we will learn that the choice is actually similar - a burning (probable) death by veilfire, or a slower (definite) lingering death from Blight. We know that Blight is in the lyrium, we know it's in the soil, therefore infecting the lowest part of the foodchain. We know dragons carry blight (though interestingly can seem to stem its spread in their own bodies - does killing dragons somehow make blight spread faster??), so it exists at the top of the food chain too. Thedas is dying a slow death I think, and Solas doesn't see a third way, but perhaps hopes that the Inquisitor can find one?
I do love the parallels between his story and the Inquisitor's - obviously the stakes are higher and the scale larger for Solas, but still. The Inquisitor is seen as a divine figure and can can either embrace that (like the Evanuris) or reject it (like Solas). The Inquisitor has to make decisions (alone, ultimately) that result in the deaths of good people along with bad regardless - Ser Barris and other decent people die if you don't do the Templar quest, reasonable mages are killed if you do. The Inquisitor's goal throughout DAI is to stop a being who declares himself a god, Solas locked away those who declared the same of themselves; quizzy goes from 'hero' to 'threat' very quickly after Corypheus's demise, Solas goes from someone waging a 'noble struggle' to being the villain of what remains of the culture he tried to save. They both know what it's like for their 'story' to get away from them. Then of course there's the mage quest, where the Inquisitor 'rights' a 'wrong' world, much as Solas is seeking to do ..
Sorry, I do realise all this will have been said before, and better than I'm saying it, but damn. Trespasser has made me love the base game even more because of all this

(comes to the blanket fort again) I'm trying to find solace in great Solas fanfics (I'm slowly making up another list, will post it to the fanfic page sometime), and I'd like to once more post two great links to fluffy, warm, safe-for-work (at least in the first chapters) lovingly done works of fiction (for those who just can't deal with FEELS anymore, like me):
(both great, both AU, both still unfinished, the second one, um, more like abandoned than unfinished, but the first one is still going strong!)

Oh gawd, you guys. I'm so glad I had this thread and the 20-odd pages to read through. I came home earlier today and found my dog dead on the floor. She wasn't old, so it was completely wtf unexpected and out of nowhere. I've been a wreck. But all the lore, debates, and duckfaced Lavellans have been great. Really. I'm so grateful for all you smart and wonderful people having good discussions. It's been the right amount of distraction.
Best of all? Watching low approval Solas. That is the Best. Thing. Ever. inside of a one minute conversation. I laughed so hard.
I am so playing through Trespasser again tomorrow.
Damn, that is awful ![]()
Sending some internet hugs.

Poor guy. He deliberately gives people lines that are ambiguous and instead stopping arguments, it just makes more.
He can't win.
As a female who just so happens to be bisexual, one of the sexualities barely anyone believes exists, and an advocate for acceptance of all sexualities (as long as they're not illegal) I honestly do not understand the fighting about Solas' sexuality at all.
His sexuality does not effect his character in any way. He's not even a real person, for ***** sake. Sexuality has nothing to do with the character of any individual.
As a bisexual, I would like to be viewed by others mainly as who I am as a person, not by who I'm sexually attracted to.
The fighting about him is honestly slightly offensive, since I've already dealt with so much **** about my sexuality which, honestly doesn't matter.
What's important is the person, not the sexuality.
This ^^^ but also...
ugh both sides of the asexual sexual argument are щ(゚Д゚щ) inducing. its intentionally ambiguous, headcanon and portray/write/draw what you want, dont argue about it in a 'ha! my way is better' or 'omg the other side are sooo wrong' way and leave other people to their interpretations! come on. Solas is the biggest gamechanger Thedas has seen historically and presently and you wanna argue that they banged or didnt bang????
I have... complex views on leaving a character's sexuality up for debate:
Oh my gosh.
PW says it's a great idea

Back when I was talking of restoring the past I was thinking more like.. When someone buys an old house that's crumbling and they do it up for somewhere nice to live.
You know, the nice pleasant kind of restoration that everyone can enjoy!

The only problem I have with people who complain about the gender and sexuality identification of characters like this is that they are doing the complete opposite of what they are fighting so hard themselves to stop.
Forcing your viewpoints, however important they are to you, on other people is just wrong.
Some people can't see any other option but theirs and they refuse to see any shades of grey. It's black or white and they will never feel vindicated until someone makes their viewpoint official. But unfortunately for them its the writers, the ultimate creators of the characters, that define who and what these characters are and how they identify, not the player. We are lucky that they give us so many options as it is, when there are so many games out there that leave no room for interpretation.
Why would you attack and tear down one of the few companies who work so hard to give voices to groups of people who don't always identify as straight? Why would you force someone into being what you want? Into feeling how you feel? Isn't that what they work so hard to prevent? They fight against being stuck in this box yet force others into another box, just one shaped different.

I can't either, I have a Trevelyan who's trying to romance Cullen, but whenever I play her I get to the Hinterlands, the music kicks in and I feel all nostalgic, I miss my Lavellan and feel wrong playing anything else...it's so weird..

The Cullen romance is so fluffy. It was my first playthrough but I still need to do any of the DLCs with my Evie. Poor girl is in limbo after I romanced Solas and got stuck in the hellspiral. But I'll push through at some point, if only to see their wedding. will do my heart some good after Solas.

Productivity has gone out the window for me since Tuesday. The emotional energy hasn't gone down a bit since I played. I need people to talk with about ALL THE THINGS!
Edit : It's bad enough that now, every time I see the word "unique" in a work document or a news article I can only hear it in my mind in Solas' voice. I'm gone so, so very deep into the hellspiral...

That reason is their curse somewhat. Because they are more likely to include different sexualities, people think they have a better chance of arguing their's into the game. There's a lot of self-entitlement within gaming fans. Not one damn day goes by where someone doesn't post on the Playstation forums I use about how Sony aren't catering to their specific needs and they'll take their business to Xbox if Sony doesn't unban them or add some feature only they care about. Eugh.
I love that they include characters that are LBGTQ, but I don't want them to write characters just to fit certain labels. Tumblr frequently takes the ****** with this subject. I swear they bring out a new label each week. So everyone can be a special snowflake!
No.
And when it comes to Solas? His sexuality is the last thing I'm worried about. Seriously. There's a little bit more to his character than whether or not he like 'teh sex the ladies. If whether they banged or not is all you are taking away from this situation, then you are doing it very VERY wrong.

Can I just say how fricking great the new Dread Wolf theme is? Both ominous and sad, it captures Solas perfectly. And using it again in the final fight theme, with the added "We'll fight for/against (depending on player's choice)" you rythm of the music. It's brilliant.
