The Cullen romance is soothing to play after such emotional despair with Solas.

 

The weird thing is...I don't know if I could? I'm not sure why. The Cullen romance is an adorable fountain of fluff feels but I'm not really motivated to do one. Sera next for me. Not sure after that. Might make my first DA man and go for Cass.

Oh gawd, you guys. I'm so glad I had this thread and the 20-odd pages to read through. I came home earlier today and found my dog dead on the floor. She wasn't old, so it was completely wtf unexpected and out of nowhere. I've been a wreck. But all the lore, debates, and duckfaced Lavellans have been great. Really. I'm so grateful for all you smart and wonderful people having good discussions. It's been the right amount of distraction.

 

Best of all? Watching low approval Solas. That is the Best. Thing. Ever. inside of a one minute conversation. I laughed so hard.

 

I am so playing through Trespasser again tomorrow.

The only problem I have with people who complain about the gender and sexuality identification of characters like this is that they are doing the complete opposite of what they are fighting so hard themselves to stop.

 

Forcing your viewpoints, however important they are to you, on other people is just wrong.

 

Some people can't see any other option but theirs and they refuse to see any shades of grey. It's black or white and they will never feel vindicated until someone makes their viewpoint official. But unfortunately for them its the writers, the ultimate creators of the characters, that define who and what these characters are and how they identify, not the player. We are lucky that they give us so many options as it is, when there are so many games out there that leave no room for interpretation. 

 

Why would you attack and tear down one of the few companies who work so hard to give voices to groups of people who don't always identify as straight? Why would you force someone into being what you want? Into feeling how you feel? Isn't that what they work so hard to prevent? They fight against being stuck in this box yet force others into another box, just one shaped different.

That's a strange thing not to want to forgive Solas for, since his creating the veil is the whole reason Dragon Age as we know it exists! Otherwise we'd be playing Elf Age- Still Elfy. 

 

I would actually quite happily play Elf Age: Still Elfy. For reals though, imagine if we were able to play a game set just before the Fall, where we were allowed to either help the Evanuris, help Solas, or tell both of them to eff off and end up becoming one of the Forgotten ones.

I just can't get behind Cullen's romance.  It's so boring next to Solas' :/  I guess I love angst/guy-playing-hard-to-get over fluff.

 

I can't either.

I tried, because he's a handsome and likeable chap.

But I really can't do fluff.

Dorian is as fluffy as I can get. He is pretty fluffy but not so much that I find it smothering.

 

 

aaaaand I've just realised it's because of the drama. I love the Solas and Dorian romances because of the potential shock, scandal and drama.

 I have... complex views on leaving a character's sexuality up for debate:

I've seen this used to erase the sexuality of every single bisexual character in DA. People just flat out ignore anything that didn't happen in their own game, or lines they never heard. Anders has canonically slept with Isabela and was attracted to a female Warden? Nope, he's gay. Leliana was in a relationship with another woman for years? Nope, straight. Hell, I've even seen people describing Bull - a character stated by his author to be pansexual - to be straight until Dorian.

Solas has dialouge in the game that indicate he's not asexual. Whether or not the player hears that is unimportant. It's still canon - just as Leliana's and Anders' bisexuality still exists.

I also think ace fans deserve far, far more than a character who can be interpreted as ace if you ignore a whole bunch of their dialouge, and I truly hope that we'll get a proper ace LI in a later game.

 

What should be more mportant is that the dialouge allows you to RP your character as ace.

But I try to look at it as who is harmed? / is anything harmed? Straight mods, definitely harm. Having an ace headcanon for Solas...besides dialogue to indicate otherwise, not really harm. Some have also interpreted body language. But this seemed to blow up over extrapolating from the ambiguous whether they did it as a sexuality question. Obviously, if people are attacking each other, that's also no good.

 

The hope is this whole situation does get better over time but I don't fault people for headcanons if there's no harm and they're not lashing out. It's usually done as an 'in the meantime, until there's better' measure anyway. As long as it's not spilling over into harassing the devs and other players.

 

I was reminded recently that I have Read Only Memories on preorder since it's coming out soon and in that game you can specifically do things like choose your pronouns. Small game, made by an LGBT team, sure, but it would be great to see this stuff spread.

And then Crestwood and then you realize you encouraged him to do whatever he was doing and now we know and it's like maaaaaaybe I should've picked a less open to interpretation answer or one that might have knocked sense into you.

 

Can we patch in some new dialogue options for that scene? Like a "I'd learn to make a better life in the world that remains"?

I romanced Golden Boy in my first PT, but by the end of it I was just going through the motions and was waay more interested in Fen'Harel instead. 

 

I do like romances that are 100% full of happiness and fluff like my Swan Princess of Awesome, but Cullen felt too predictable for me. IRL Cullen sans lyrium is the right guy, but in a game I want some drama, laughter, a challenge, or better yet all of those.

That is the thing I would be torn between Cass and Dorian. Both such great characters, though I may lean Cass simply because I enjoyed the Dorian BFF thing too much. And Cass, well, I've made no secret that I both love her character and she's a member of team distracting walk.

I understand that viewpoint, and I see no harm in headcanons.  It's when people start going down the 'the sexuality of X character is left up to the player to decide' that I think leads to a dangerous road.  Because if you allow that line for thinking for, say, ace!Solas then it leaves room for straight!Leliana.  And that's wrong.

I enabled my inner masochist by re-watching the main game romance scenes and there are many lines that have completely changed their meaning for me, including the Well question, but also these:

 

(about the Templars) "They have flaws but I try to understand them. You cannot change anything without understanding."

 

"It seems you hold the key to our salvation."

 

"You change... everything."

 

"Most people act with so little understanding of the world." 

 

"It would be kinder in the long run." (I know I'm reposting this one, but it still makes me shudder.)

 

"I joined the Inquisition to save the world. Regardless of who 'my people' are, this was the best way to help them."

 

"The Temple of Mythal was extraordinary. In all my journeys, I never dreamed of finding anything like it." (What does he mean by this? Hasn't he been to one of Mythal's temples? Or was this one built after the Veil was created, thus making it surprising that something so elvenly majestic would survive?)

 

"In all Thedas, I never expected to find someone who could draw my attention from the Fade."

 

So basically, the entire romance has changed its meaning for me. There's also this amazing banter:

It's incredible, I expected the revelation of Fen'Harel's goal to be shocking, but I thought I had understood his lines in the game. Now I shudder. All. The. Time.

So... I was wondering if anyone had any opinions about this:

 

At the very end, my Inquisitor says something like "my adventuring days are over, but the Inquisition will live on" or something to that effect. Does this mean that our Quizzies aren't coming back in DA4?

 

I mean, all through the scene with Solas, we were given options to say "I won't give up on you" etc. etc., and then there was the very end scene where the Inquisitor marks Tevinter with a dagger... What was all that then? Do you think the Inquisitor will return?

It suggests Inky won't return as protagonist, which has always been likely anyway given Bioware's statements about 1 game for every PC.

But in some ways all those choices suggest to me that they do still have plans for the Inquisitor to appear. What those choices do is give them some guidance as to how the Inquisitor should act as an NPC

Apparently bioware has "considered" the possibility of using two protagonists at some point. Perhaps DA4 will be the time to try it out. 

 

Their (Laidlaw) comment on it: As to multiple protagonists? Absolutely fascinating and, yes, we have discussed it some. There are a lot of challenges in terms of helping the player identify with more than one created character, but it's a long way from impossible. I thought, for example, that the weaving stories of the GTA V protagonists created a really interesting flow in the story and the gameplay. I agree that betraying yourself would be super cool, so long as "the player" version of you didn't end up feeling like a chump.

If in the next game, we have a new protagonist and the Inquisitor appears and helps in some sort of fight against Solas but there's only two outcomes (1) Solas kills an Inquisitor if they chose the option to stop him, and (2) the Inquisitor dies trying to help Solas if they chose to option to save him.  No matter what, Solas goes cray cray.

I'm still holding up for a dual protagonist DA4. Maybe a new main protagonist, but with the choice of going back to our inquisitor for part of it. I would love seeing each protagonist's choices having an influence on what the other does/can do. So, having a Inquisitor wanting to save Solas will lead to different choices available to the new protagonist, and the choices made during missions for that protagonist to influence the choices available to the inquisitor. I wonder if that would be too complicated to implement, game-wise.
