On the next protagonist;

 

Apparently bioware has "considered" the possibility of using two protagonists at some point. Perhaps DA4 will be the time to try it out. 

 

Their (Laidlaw) comment on it: As to multiple protagonists? Absolutely fascinating and, yes, we have discussed it some. There are a lot of challenges in terms of helping the player identify with more than one created character, but it's a long way from impossible. I thought, for example, that the weaving stories of the GTA V protagonists created a really interesting flow in the story and the gameplay. I agree that betraying yourself would be super cool, so long as "the player" version of you didn't end up feeling like a chump. 

 

 

 

This is exactly what I'd hope they'd implement at some point, one last hurrah playing all my past heroes. And we'd be in control so no OOC worries when they return *cough*HoF*cough*.  Different heroes in different regions , you can switch between them and do missions that are personal to them. Inquisitor would hunt for Solas, HoF would try and cure the calling (it's canon, all of our wardens are doing this even the orlesian ones) the only puzzling one would be Hawke, I suppose that's why they left his or her fate vague in the Fade in case they wanted an out later.

I enabled my inner masochist by re-watching the main game romance scenes and there are many lines that have completely changed their meaning for me, including the Well question, but also these:

 

(about the Templars) "They have flaws but I try to understand them. You cannot change anything without understanding."

 

"It seems you hold the key to our salvation."

 

"You change... everything."

 

"Most people act with so little understanding of the world." 

 

"It would be kinder in the long run." (I know I'm reposting this one, but it still makes me shudder.)

 

"I joined the Inquisition to save the world. Regardless of who 'my people' are, this was the best way to help them."

 

"The Temple of Mythal was extraordinary. In all my journeys, I never dreamed of finding anything like it." (What does he mean by this? Hasn't he been to one of Mythal's temples? Or was this one built after the Veil was created, thus making it surprising that something so elvenly majestic would survive?)

 

"In all Thedas, I never expected to find someone who could draw my attention from the Fade."

 

So basically, the entire romance has changed its meaning for me. There's also this amazing banter:

 

 

 

It's incredible, I expected the revelation of Fen'Harel's goal to be shocking, but I thought I had understood his lines in the game. Now I shudder. All. The. Time.

It just adds some other layers for me, but I don't think it changes the central romance because, as Weekes did confirm, he was at the point of giving it all up to just tell you the truth and be with you. A high-friendship Inquisitor helps him realize he could be wrong but only romanced Lavellan actually gets him to consider living in the real, modern world.

 

He makes his decision because he feels he must, because he's resigned to it, and begins to steel himself again.

 

However, I do believe with statements like him needing time, having 'considerations' saying it would be kinder in the long run....that was her leading him to change, as much as he denies it now. Solas shoves a lot of things down in the name of what he considers his duty to fix at whatever cost.

 

But I take the romance, the statements within, as genuine. He learned and drew hope, he came to the point where he was at that point of saying...'maybe I could just be Solas again, hold to what I have in this world', but he's been betrayed, scarred, wrong, and is full of regret and remorse. Even as he still has that calculating and side willing to steel up and hold people (who he has come to recognize as people, especially a Lavellan he loves - but still as exceptions). at arm's length.

That's one way to look at it. I think Cole's line about Solas burning some woman off his face is not related to Lavellan. It's something that happened in the Arlathan past. It would help if some people who played a male or non-romanced Inq give us feedback: Did Cole say that line in your PT? 

 

My overall interpretation of the romance lines is that he is conflicted and trying to understand our world, but ultimately in his homesickness and regret he fails to see some things.. like how he thinks most people act with little understanding, but ironically he's doing the same. 

 

By drawing his attention from the Fade I think he means she almost turned him away from his mission. He was ready to confess to her at that point, wasn't he?

 

I would love to be able to redeem him. What sucks about Fen'Harel is that you cannot redeem him without being drawn into his vortex of dread and despair. That little video with hated Inquisitor is as much telling as it's funny. You give 0 f***s, he gives 0 f***s. Unless you're meta gaming, in order to connect to him and show him mortals are people too, you have to understand him, get close, and ultimately endure some of his sadness and some feelings of betrayal. There's no easy road with him. 

 

Just more testament to how tough Lavellan is, or any Inq who is friends with him, for that matter.

 

I did get it on my play through with a spirit Cole.

I also think the burning her off his face would relate to possibly Mythal/other God.  Again stipulating that this line referred to Solas. If Mythal/or other pulled him from the fade unwillingly and forced him to manifest himself even if it was to have him help start a rebellion he was still pulled from the fade despite not wanting a physical form.

 

For Lavellan to pull his attention from the fade I think would mean that they are the first thing to ever do that ever.  Since the time before he was physical.  Again assuming the idea that spirits formed the first Elves are true.  But it's still exciting for a romanced Lavellan

Yep, I agree he was 100% genuine, conflicted, and she almost convinced him to leave everything behind. 

 

I see it with my head but I can't yet with my heart. Let's just say I'm extremely sensitive to betrayal and value kindness above all else, so you can see where I'm coming from without writing down a wall of text about my feels and turning the thread into my therapy hour. 

 

For now he's Fen'Harel to me and the adorkable nerd is as good as dead. I'm entertained by his game and how for a while he managed to outplay everyone. I see the sadness behind his motives and it also entertains me. He's a fascinating character in his every aspect and it will be fun to see what the future has in stock for him.

Yeah I loved the guy, so I've never made him tranquil or send him to the circle but I was trying to think of all the things that could happen to him and I just don't remember. I might have to go back and do a replay but I don't think he can end up dead right? We need someone of his caliber to help with Solas. Also, I'm not sure but can dreamers sense other dreamers in any way? I hope not <.<

Feynriel is one of my favorite DA2 characters to think about. If you let him go, you meet a woman later on who has been communicating with him in her dreams. Here's the wiki on the quest.  There are a few things here that are SUPER intriguing to me. One, it seems like as a dreamer, Feynriel has the ability to kill people from a distance, seeing as how he gets the bandits to kill each other to save the girl. His relationship with the woman is really interesting too, because she's never met him outside her dreams but she considers them lovers. Her dialogue is kind of creepy when you talk to her, she gave me the impression that she was brainwashed or being mind controlled into loving him and going to his side. These things all sort of hint at the kind of power a dreamer has. Feynriel himself was VERY new to his powers, so just think about the sort of power Solas must have as an ancient elvhen dreamer.

This can't be it for my elf, I can only hope the next game gives her proper closure with Solas (even if it means convincing him to let her go with him). I have to say I loved the angry confrontation "I would have had you trust me!" because there's a moment where he gets close enough that you think he's about to give in and kiss her.

I'm going to chip in and say I love the idea of multiple, player-controlled protagonists which you switch between at different areas of the game

I really like the idea of playing a very ordinary, down-to-earth protagonist again after how big and important the Inquisition was. I kind of hated how so many fans complain that they had to leave the Hero of Ferelden and Hawke behind - I felt that both stories had adequate closure, and the themes and ideas within them could be explored quite easily through other characters (although, who am I to talk - I have a biiiiiig headcanon about my Surana Warden would work as Inquisitor). And I was ready to feel the same about the Inquisitor - her story was over, and she'd go off having different sorts of adventures.

 

Since Trespasser, I've changed my mind - the beginning of the DLC sets it up as if you're going to retire, but the end introduces a new conflict with Solas that renews the purpose of the Inquisition as a force to bring order and stop the end of the world. Given also the established relationship between the quizzy and Solas' character, it would be a waste to have anyone else confront him.

 

So, what I'd like to see in DA4 is two different protagonists.

 

One would just be, quite similar to Hawke, a talented and deadly, but otherwise relatively ordinary Tevinter who has become an agent of the Inquisition. Preferably I'd like to see different backgrounds - in an ideal world, I'd have race-based plots (e.g. inflitrating Fen'Harel's spy ranks as an elf, infiltrating the Ben Hassrath as an Qunari, infiltrating the Magisterium as a human mage, etc.) but I know that's unrealistic - so, I'd probably think a former slave, whose skill in combat allowed them to earn their freedom, would work as an all-purpose background. The agent would be suited to getting their hands dirty, taking out mooks, snooping on people undetected, finding a ragtag bunch of eccentric companions etc. - all the combat situations which it wouldn't make sense for the Inquisitor to be in once they'd lost their mark and did not need to close any rifts.

 

The other would be the Inquisitor - and we'd get access for them for Winter Palace-esque quests which involve infiltrating high society, which involve much more puzzles and dialogue and moving cut-scenes than combat skills. That way, we have an access point into court politics and the movement of governments which the ordinary protagonist wouldn't have. I'd imagine we'd access our Inquisitor far less than new protagonist - I would like to get to know our new guy more - but I think introducing the Quizzy as a minor element would mean fans wouldn't feel cheated when we eventually confront Solas. I'd like to have full control over how that scene goes, given how complex and different all our Lavellens are.

is why Inky probably won't appear in the next series.  Because they give you a recorded choice on how you want the game to continue.  If they were going to bring Inky back then this wouldn't have needed to be defined.

 

He has a good point, not a point I like to hear, admittedly, but a logical point.

It suggests Inky won't return as protagonist, which has always been likely anyway given Bioware's statements about 1 game for every PC.

But in some ways all those choices suggest to me that they do still have plans for the Inquisitor to appear. What those choices do is give them some guidance as to how the Inquisitor should act as an NPC

Well, then again, I think DAI proved that bringing our previous heros back as NPCs is... problematic, to say the least.

 

I personally have always wanted my protagonists to continue, even if it's just for one sequel. If what Laidlaw said about having 2 playable protagonists is something they might implement for DA4, then that would be good enough for me. All I want is for Lavellan to be able to confront Solas again. And persuade him to be reasonable.

 

And then marry him and have babies and live happily ever after. It's not too much to ask, I'm sure

I understand that viewpoint, and I see no harm in headcanons.  It's when people start going down the 'the sexuality of X character is left up to the player to decide' that I think leads to a dangerous road.  Because if you allow that line for thinking for, say, ace!Solas then it leaves room for straight!Leliana.  And that's wrong.

can see the Inquisitor having a really personal narrative/character heavy campaign - lots of cinematics, maybe kind of linear and a lot shorter- very much focused on the search for ways to stop/save Solas. I love your idea of winter palace-style infiltration and puzzle missions! Perhaps consciously quite high profile, in order to draw Fen'Harel's attention towards what the Inquisitor is doing and away from our second Protagonist. Very small roster of companions, if any at all. Romantic content continued with previous LIs (but all NPCs like Cullen/Josie, maybe), with maybe one new guy/gal for those whose romances didn't work out.

 

Protag 2 would be of the more traditional type - start at level 1, plenty of sidequests and exploring (the whole of Minrathous to explore would be incredible!), story converges with that of the Inq every so often. Also looking into Solas-related stuff (and trying to stay under the radar doing it), but with another main thread woven in - Tevinter/Qunari tensions maybe? A smaller list of comps again (to make up for the fact that there are two parties to provide for), but a couple of romanceables (scout Harding!) Towards end game, the 2nd protag gets to the same 'level' as the Inquisitor and the two protagonists join forces for the final confrontation!

I don't know about a complete guide, but that scematic can be found after you get access to the third eluvian, when you explore further (before actually getting into that eluvian) you'll find another one of those red eggs and get it to show you a pathway to yet another eluvian. It's a little side area with a chest. You fight some demons and get the armor + schematics.

 

On another note, is it just me or have they added new armor to the main game? I seem to have seen that on another thread.

Even when I'm romancing Cullen on my Trevalyn I still side-eye Solas.  I imagine she's thinking if I had the opportunity it would be you and me.  I mean....I love Cullen...totally....but if you were open to humans....stop looking at me like that or I'll need to find a way to stop being human!!

 

That was actually what my Trevelyan did! I started DAI with a Trevelyan, but after meeting Solas and travelling with him for some time, I decided she had to be an elf. So I remade her as a Lavellan, same name and as close to the same face as possible (I think it took me about 50-60 hours to try to remake her face). She was my first elf in the DA series

Yeah, after an initial hellspiral of sad feels, I'm actually way more into TO now that I've finished Trespasser. *raises optimism flag proudly*

I honestly expected that we'd get one last token tragic confrontation with Solas, where he'd hint he still loved you but leave before you had the chance to say anything meaningful, and you'd never see him again. And that'd be that.

 

Instead, we get a DLC which is Wolf Hunt in everything but name - like, from the moment you enter the eluvian, it's just Fen'Harel Fen'Harel Fen'Harel oh hello Solas WAIT FEN'HAREL. He shows us that he loves us repeatedly in that last conversation, he calls us vhenan so many times, his voice almost breaks a couple of times - for all his flaws (god there are so damn many), he is still so, so in love with Lavellen. That much is clear.

 

What's even better though, is that this is almost definitely not the last time the Inquisitor will see him. The Inquisition, in whatever form, is plotting to track down Solas and knock some sense in that egg-head of his. No other organisation is dedicated to the cause - at least, not yet. And given the ending choices, there will be probably a chance where he'll be able to redeem himself, and it could be incredibly sweet and beautiful.
