My flimsy shot at a strategy.

Keep the Inquisition running as a false target to give his spies something to do. Do small retirement-type operations, occasioanlly insterspersed with more significant peace keeping missions to give the impression you're living well while time remains. 

 

On the side, assemble a separate shadow organization composed of your most trusted people. Find someone you trust whom Fen'Harel does not know and put them in charge as the figurehead, while you take a mid-level rank and act as an 'advisor' behind the scenes. 

 

Your goals are:

 

1. Find him.

2. Draw him out.

3. Find some way to convince him. Remember you've already given him your sincere love and friendship and that made him regret what he must do, but it didn't change his actions. So you need to do more than that. 

 

1. This is the toughest thing for me to figure out, but the best I can come up with is: Cast a wide net with as many sources as you can. Keep close ties with the nobility to detect the slightest chance of his meddling in Thedas politics. Scout the elven ruins nonstop. Use Tevinter mages and their ability to control spirits to interrogate spirits who may have seen him. (You'll have to use blood magic, bind, and potentially kill a few spirits, sorry. How far are you willing to go with this?) Keep close watch on the slaves, I bet many of them will be his agents. Also, if it's been several years and he still hasn't carried out his plan, there's something he needs: Is it a magical artefact? Is it a particular blood ritual that he's gathering people for sacrifice? Anything that can be used to enter the fade physically. If there's knowledge about it , it will be in Tevinter.

 

2. Once you find out what he needs, you need to get to it first. The artefact, the specific place and time for the blood ritual, etc., get there before he does.

 

3. So I think the best way to reform him would be to strip him of his power. You made some progress with him in Skyhold and convinced him to view Thedosians as people while he was there in his weakened state. While he is acting as Fen'Harel, he will be intentionally steeling himself, and there would be little you can say or do. So, use your connections to the Chantry and have a crapload of templars and seekers. They helped seal the Breach which was his magic. Then can help neutralize him now, but you probably need three times as many. You'll have to pump those guys chock full of lyrium, sorry. Have an army of mages ready to also help dispell him. Hope you were on good terms with Vivienne. Finally, you will need Morrigan to take Mythal's power from him. 

 

Once he has been stripped of power, don't imprision him or do anything cruel like that, it will only ahrden his heart more against people. Assign him to doing some research to re-create some of those ancient elven worders he misses into the current world. 

 

If all fails, be ready to make the choice whether to kill him or tell him that Thedas can burn and pelad to be with him once more.

The only thing that bothers me is that since all the other protags have their endings... how would we manage any type of extended story for Lavellan? I know the forum has discussed it before, but like. My heart just wrenches considering the fact we may not be able to play Lavellan again. I get sad.

Agree, researching an alternative is good, but might be a more long-term goal. You can even have him do research on that once the initial threat of him ending the world has been neutralized.

 If the Inquisitor does manage to come up with something theoretically possible, they could at least hope to catch his attention. Then, he can spend the next x number of years with brilliant minds from all around Thedas bringing that solution to fruition. A bit like what we did when it came time to come up with a solution for the breach, only on a much larger scale.

 

Whatever happens, if there is a way to save Solas' life, I want it to happen. Death at the emotional down he's at (and it would be even worse once his plans crashes around his ears, even if he is the one to finally decide to stop himself) death would be a mercy. I believe living well is in a way a more fitting punishment, while at the same time being in line with the belief in second chances my Inquisitor has. After all, her sentence for Florianne was to live amongst the population to hopefully learn humility.

Really interesting - and you bring up a neat thought. I thought the Templar/Mage choice was just lazy writing(the way it was done) but I think it may actually play into what happens. If you keep the Templar Order and have the Seekers AND end up fighting a crap-load of actual mages -- mages who potentially never had to fight them before(dreamers).  You may have an actual advantage.  

 

I think the game is setting up the end of magic in someway -- at least the magic that is shown in the series.  History has shown an entire society of mages is really not stable. Yello Elvhenan and Tevinter.  To what we have now...not great and the story is now setting up that a war between mages is brewing AGAIN.   This is pure pure speculation but I wonder if the next game may be the last of this incarnation of Dragon Age.  Like if they continue with the series it would be "something else Age" with a downplay on magic. AN emphasis on technology.

If it makes you feel better, I strongly believe the ending leaves the door wide open to the continuation of the Inquisitor's journey in some shape, whoever it is they did or didn't romance. We're just not sure how yet. also, Patrick Weeked tweeted something about the fact that Solavellan might get real closure in the future, so long as there are new games (considering DA4 hasn't been greenlit yet, but that Mike Laidlaw didn'T seem worried about it in one of his interviews, don't remember which)

Sounds like a bug.  Have you tried clicking on the heart icon with Cullen and seeing what happens?  If he turns you down it means your romance with Solas is working properly.

I feel your feels. I refuse to accept that it's the end until Bioware themselves declare it so. It just seems a bit silly to me that our Inquisitor's story would end the way it did though. Stab map, "we're going here." and then that's it? Okay time for the next person to take over? That just seems off to me. Our Inquisitor, regardless of being a Solasmancer/Lavellan or not has the most influence on Solas, we know the most about him and in my opinion, we're the most capable of stopping him (either through force or diplomacy)

I thought I was being an a**hole when I allied with the templars (after all, I play a mage) and became BFF with Cass and Vivienne for the sake of headcanon gymnastics, but now, in the long term, it might prove useful.

I mean the clearly changed gears somewhere since there is the kill Solas bug floating around.  It had to be programmed in at some point to exist like that.  We just need more we love Solas voices than Solas sucks voices  I feel like this thread is a good start.   Also...I can't see how anyone would see the non-friend ending and still dislike him.  Seriously even if he is cordial at best he stil FRIGGIN helps you.  And explains things to you, tries to get you to understand his point of view.  IMO(non friendship/romanced Solas playthroughs are just jerky characters - to Solas...because I love him.)

But yeah, I think that may end up happening actually. Either Sandal's prophecy comes true and the world is flooded with magic and everyone becomes a super-mage or it's the actual end of magic.

This is making me think about how my Nirwen would react. She's obviously grown and changed from the Dalish clan and influence she grew up in but she still has ties to them. She grew up trained to hunt, track, protect so this is not a strange thing to her. But Solas is not exactly a prey animal.

 

There is also the matter of retraining somehow since unless there's something to replace her arm with similar functionality, the whole dual-wielding daggers thing may need some adjustments.

I'm yet to get that banter (which I will, after I do a proper playthrough), but aside from other stuff we find throughout Trespasser, this strongly confirms what I suspected from the start - life evolved from spirits who have enough strength of personality to eventually gain enough of a physical form to become 'real' and find a foothold in the physical world.

(+ codexes in Shattered Library imply that some form of "unchanging world" - Earth, likely - exists, even if it was more intrinsically connected to the Fade before the Veil. Apparently Enavuris claim it as their domain and guard it jealously, banishing anyone they've found to be a threat outside its bounds ).

 

Elves (... and everyone else at some point?) were likely ones that were sort of beings that balanced and shifted between both worlds - some stronger and more defined, and some weaker and more impressionable/malleable. This would explain the existence of casts in elvhen society and also marry the concept of Creators (and other 'gods') being both powerful mages AND powerful spirits (at their core) at the very same time.

 

They have a physical shape, but it's not as relevant as the core of their being - it's relatively fluid and not necessarily bound fully to rules of immutable reality (this also explains why many old elvhen names seem to imply that its bearer is a personification of some emotion or concept. Or why Solas has a habit of using titles he thinks are appropriate for given people, rather than their 'earthly' names).

 

And the interesting thing about spirit!Cole is that at the end of his personal mission in base game, Solas tells everyone that at the basis of Cole's reversal to more 'spirity' being is him getting rid of his "self-imposed mortality".

 

What this also implies is - ironically - that while Cole began 'evolving' towards being a human, outwardly, he is likely the closest thing to what Solas considers "his people"!

I don't think there was ever an intention to kill him in the DLC. But it would've been great to fight him.

Spirit!Cole goes back into the Fade to find and help Solas. He knows his friend is hurting and he wants to help.

And of course, you'd need to give him dark hair, because it comes from the word for dark, black, etcetera. Unless he's into irony, then I suppose you could get away with blond hair...

I'll admit I'm somewhat at a loss on how to reach a man that doesn't want to be found and has access to eluvian (and thus places like the crossroad that we can't reach at all). I think maybe her plan might be to start the ball rolling on changes that even he can't ignore. Tevinter gives us an opportunity for a slave revolt of the kind that shakes an Empire. Become the Dread Wolf of the Dragon Age. Draw his gaze away from his plan and to what you're doing, while on the side you have your own people trying to infiltrate his organization to gather information.

 

Solas in his current state power-wise can't be approached directly for a confrontation. So, the Inquisitor needs to find a way he doesn't expect so she can draw him into the open.

 

Lavellan has "changed everything" once for him. She will do it again. And again, however many times it takes to make him see this world has worth saving.

That...would actually make a great DA4.
His banter with Dorian even has him dismissive of Dorian's protest that he, y'know, probably can't free ALL of the slaves in the Imperium.
So we counter his grandiose plan by proving that we mortals can end the Arlathan style society and slavery without resorting to death and magical mayhem. All with Dorian and Maevaris as snarky political backing.
I love it.
