He couldn't have removed it.  They still needed it to stop Cory.  What he might have done is told her the truth, then removed the Anchor after Cory's demise.  Though I still wonder if he would've been powerful enough to do it without Mythal's power.

 

Removing her arm is a side-effect that comes from Solas taking the Anchor.  Just plain chopping off her arm wouldn't have worked, at least according to the Justinia-spirit.

I really like the fact my Lavellan ended up a 100 miles from where she started as a character and managed to surprise me so much.

My Lavellan surprised me too, though in a very different way.

 

One of my favorite arcs back in Origins was my Tabris.  She probably started out the weakest of my PCs, but found her strength and grew up into a total badass.  So I wanted to do something similar with Lavellan.  While my Lavellan was clever and kind, she also was young, naive, and scared of her own shadow at the start.

 

And it honestly took her a while to come into her own.  She hated being the Herald.  She was extremely reluctant when Cass made her Inquisitor.  And she leaned on Solas an awful lot at first.  But she came to see the Inquisition as an extension of her clan, and herself as their protector.  As the circle of her empathy grew, so did her confidence and sense of responsibility.  And by the end of Trespasser, I honestly think she's my strongest and most moral PC.  I could gush for days; I'm so damn proud of her

Oh, I see  Dunno; the Anchor hadn't started going haywire until two years later.  Maybe it's like an infectious disease; nip it early in the bud and it can be safely treated.  Let it progress, and you have to amputate to save the person.

I think a romanced Lavellan actually might have the biggest advantage over Solas. The guys is full of feels. Solas may know us but we also know him. We know he is genuinely sympathetic toward us. Playing to his sense of decency and compassion could actually manipulate him into making a fatal mistake. Just sayin'... He's not above being emotionally manipulated to some extent. I'd like to set Solas up to fail regardless of whether we succeed in convincing him to change his mind. Basically, Plan A is to convince Solas to not destroy the whole world and Plan B  (already set in motion well before confronting him) is to trap Solas so that if negotiations fail we have lured him into a vulnerable situation by appearing vulnerable and playing to his trust of our good intentions. I wouldn't mind bringing down the Veil, but I'm sure as hell not okay with killing millions of innocent people to do it. If we can't find a "safe" way to do it, I would kill Solas rather than sacrifice countless innocent people. As much as I love him to bits and it would rip my heart out, that's just not cool.

Honestly? I think that's one of the reasons he keeps Lavellan at the distance. He's emotionally compromised and he knows that. What's more, he was severely betrayed before. Dunno if it was 'just' Mythal's murder, but something happened along the way that made him unable to trust - not even Lavellan. He's likely afraid that she'd eventually betray him - hah, maybe he's even setting things in a way that she'd try, which will only make matters worse, because she'd basically confirm his worst fears.

 

Honestly, I would rather not try and emotionally manipulate him - for a person who seemingly yearns for trust and finding kindred soul, yet is absolutely terrified of being hurt again, it would be the worst kind of betrayal (even if 'earned' by him going with his mad plan) that I suspect would profoundly destroy him.

Agreed.  Like you said, it's not like he hasn't dug his own grave.  He totally has.  But two wrongs don't make a right, and I don't think my Lavellan could bring herself to treat him so cruelly.  She'd honestly rather straight-up kill him than use their love as a weapon against him.

I think the counterintuitive is actually something some here have thought about already : she can't follow because he needs someone to face him and oppose him. Would it be fair to destroy the world while no one knows and the rest of  Thedas isn't given a chance to fight for its survival? If he thought it fair, it would negate "the right of every free-will being to live". and he might talk about it in a panel, because even a new game wouldn't make it all clear and on the page, so to speak, as it's the kind of thing that's very hard to make clear without more info-dump than would make sense to do. At least, it's the way I took it, but ymmv.

This makes quite a lot of sense, and goes along with the feeling that he sort of wants to be stopped. It doesn't seem quite so counterintuitive to me, but maybe it really is just that simple.

Ok, so...I have to say this, I'm really, really sad that the Inquisitor lost her hand. It's horrible. It seems she lost everything. Solas should have found her earlier, before it was so bad and then remove the Anchor if it really was necessary. Why wait until it almost killed her and now most of her arm is gone? That was cruel. It's hard for me to deal with that.

And what is even worse...all the power she had? Gone. She was special, she could enter the Fade physically, dream with "so much focus" as Solas phrased it, recover the memories from Fade. Now she can't. And it's sad. To have that sort of power and loose it...along with so much else... I imagine it should hit her hard after all this. And now she has a terrible wound forever (apart from all the other damage).

 

She would not be able to share dreams with Solas the way she did before...

 

And that scene? The first time I saw it, I didn't see what happened. Then the next time she appears - no hand. I wondered - what did just happen? Did Solas cut it off? I think it could be done better, because I was really confused. Thankfully, during Credits, when Cassandra started talking like Vivienne, I couldn't stop myself from laughing, it somehow saved me from tears...for a few hours when I had to work.

 

 

I didn't get over this hand, though. And the Anchor. What a disaster...

@vlk3 my running theory is that Solas, when he first kept the Herald from dying, bonded the mark so it couldn't be removed, so that Corypheus couldn't remove it for himself (with the idea that since his orb wasn't in the temple ruins, Corypheus must have lived). So at the very beginning Solas had binded the mark so it couldn't be removed, since he didn't have his orb and wasn't in any position to take it for himself at the time. Hence why it couldn't be removed (especially without his orb) by Solas.

Mass Effect and The Elder Scroll games. Even though I love those games.. I have never been as passionate about a game as I am with Dragon Age.  My ex used to make fun of me because I played DAO over and over and over. Probably a bit of all of this, and also the fact the devs need all Inquisitors to be at the same point by the end of the game so they can be reused without the world state being too different for a minority of players. It would make planning the sequel too complicated.

Personal headcanon after all that fuss:

 

For a time, Lavellan returns to her clan, which now lives in the city of Wycome along with a coalition of human merchants and the city elves, in supposed harmony. As First to her Keeper, it would have been her role eventually to keep the ancient knowledge: Knowing the truth, or something far closer to it than the Dalish once did, she does the only thing she feels it right. She tells it. To the Keeper, to her clan, to all the city elves. She grants them this knowledge carefully, but for them to do with as they see fit, hoping to turn potential recruits away from Solas or the Qunari.  

 

Unlike Solas, Lavellan does not believe in hiding the truth: And being the Keeper's first, and a hero of Thedas, she is in a far better position to spread it than he was.

I was thinking about the time during the Thresspasser. He knew the Anchor was getting worse, but he just waited too much time. He wanted to make a dramatic entrance at the end and that's why half of her arm is missing now instead of just the hand.

But still, the loss of all the abilities associated with Anchor. This is terrible.

Eh, no need to feel idiotic.  People like different things.  I loved Mass Effect.  I could NOT get into The Witcher 2 and as a result I feel no desire to play the Witcher 3 despite many people in this thread squeeing over it.  Mind, I'm not using the word "squeeing" in a bad way, I squee over ME and DA.  I enjoyed Skyrim but didn't obsess over it.

I went through depression too, and that's why I'm able to tell. It's not something I'd wish on anyone, but it made understanding people easier, sort of. I don't want anyone else to drop down there, so I spend a lot of time cheering people on... and that's also part of the reason I'm so obsessed with Solas. Once I see a sad/depressed/troubled character, my "Must help him NOW!" instinct activates almost immediately

LOL, I was kinder to my Lavellan.  I headcanoned that Solas sealed the first eluvian so none of the rest of the party could get through, then unsealed it when he left.  Cass, Dorian, and Bull found her unconscious in front of the eluvian from the shock of losing the Anchor.  They were unable to follow Solas, so they carried her back through the Crossroads.

 

Though I feel bad for Dorian in that scenario.  Imagine his panic at not being able to help or even reach his dearest friend when she confronts the Dread Wolf.
