I figured he's say no, although my girl can't bring herself to do support his endeavor even if she thought he would allow her. Any thought she had of helping him died when he said, "To help my people, I must destroy yours" or words to that effect. Even if he means metaphorically destroying her people's culture and way of life, that still activated a very strong protective instinct toward her clan and her family.

My Lavellan would never, ever join him either.

 

She's 100% in the Sera camp vs. the Solas camp when it comes to people.  She's spent over two years now defending people from all walks of life.  The three most important people in her life are a compassion spirit, a Tevinter magister, and the Dread Wolf.  So while she grew up relatively insular like most of the Dalish, she doesn't think of the world in terms of "my people" or "your people" any more.  Different types of people, yes, but all just people.  That attitude even extends to the qunari, though after Trespasser and Iron Bull's personal quest, she regards the Qun with considerable horror.

It could be symbolic, using the leader of the church of a "false god" to ascend. Corypheus is pretty melodramatic that way.

I already have a physics nerd tattoo.  I was thinking about getting either the Deathly Hallows symbol for my next one, or the Elder Sign from the Lovecraftian mythos.  But I need to wait for my boyfriend to work up his nerve; he wants a tattoo but he's a tiny bit needle-phobic, so I need to be there with him.

 

That's me, though it's not really mild.   I did get better after a lot of forced medical poking in recent years, but I still don't know if I could ever handle an actual tattoo.

All those banters he has with Sera where he tries to get her to connect with her elfyness? That's him desperatly looking for something of his people left in modern elves.

Maybe my undying adoration of Sera clouds my judgement a bit a lot, but barring their views on magic & the fade, I always thought their politics were really similar. They're both rebels with a distrust of hierarchy and people who hold onto power, and hold a belief that you can stand up to them (occasionally giving the cheeky middle finger whilst you're at it, because lol).

 

They express those views in completely different ways and approach problems with radically different solutions (e.g. Sera's method is much more anarchic and horizontal - with no true leader in place in the Red Jennys, and that's the point, whereas Solas - guessing here, based on his character - would more likely be the type to set up a highly structured organisation with separate cells answering to a mastermind, going on the tips he gives to Sera in a banter). Still, they play very similar roles in society, even if the exterior screams 'opposites'. That's one of the reasons I find their dislike of each other kind of tragic.

 

Where Sera gets it right and Solas gets it wrong

is that Sera says to the Inquisitor that they need a connection to the 'little people' on the ground, otherwise there's very little stopping the Inquisition becoming no better than the noble institutions they work with. Those links - whether through speaking to ordinary folk, living in the same neighbourhood, or even earning as much as them - are vital if someone with political power wants to stay in touch with 'the little people'. If you live as far from them as possible, how on earth can you think you know their priorities and hopes, much less help? This is a problem the Inquisitor does face given that they live in a castle in the middle of nowhere - tactically great, but after 'demons invading the world' stops becoming everyone's priority, how are they to keep an ear to the ground? This is what Sera offers.

 

In comparison, Solas is actively avoiding doing just that with modern elves - or, just people in general. Because it's counter-productive to his goal. I wouldn't say that he lacks compassion - rather, feels he has to avoid it in the short-term in order to help in the long-term. Thing is: I question that, even when he achieves his goals, whether he'd keep an ear to the ground as he goes about his work post-veil.

 

Gotta say though - if you're using Sera as a yardstick for 'typical elf', you're probably doing it wrong Solas.

 

So, I'm kind of used to Life is Strange statistics at the end of an episode and I find myself wondering how many of you here

1. Umm and ahh'd on this one. I considered pledging, because I thought at first if you made your organisation a target, then rather than tracking down Fen'Harel, you're inviting him in. Then I realised that was really stupid logic. So I went with disbanding. It's just not going to ever be a quiet retirement, is it, Lavellen?

2. Yep. Did choose the "I'll kill him myself" option for Solas once, for lols. I think in my canon state, at that point my quizzy's heart pretty much went aflutter at the mention of SOLAS and she ignored the fact that being an agent for Fen'Harel actually makes a lot of sense, given that his behaviour at the Temple of Mythal indicated he wasn't of this time, and his goals align strongly with what she saw at the sanctuary. It'd also explain his distaste towards the dalish. So she just told the Viddasala that was ridiculous and said she'd save him herself.

3. Nope. I think it'd kill her to kill Solas - if necessary, she'd do it, but this whole adventure was a realisation that she definitely wasn't over him, not in the slightest.

4. Yes, actually. My quizzy was a little carried away when meeting him, and I think when she realised the actual cost in terms of lives, she realised it was a stupid thing to say, and she was glad he turned her down.

 

My Lavellen is usually very reasonable, practical, and diplomatic - she's quite skilled at navigating tetchy dalish hunters as well as tetchy Orlesian nobles, and gets on with Josie a treat because of it. This DLC arguably brought out the worst in her - I think by the end of the game, she just told them 'screw you' because she was tired and lovesick. Also, I hate not using special options and dialogue when it's available.

At first I wasn't on board with the time magic theory for whatever Solas is doing, but the more I think about it, the more plausible it seems. I mean, you don't introduce something as big as time travel to a universe for one quest in one game. There's no way that isn't coming back up again, and Solas showed interest in it as well. It would seriously violate the Chekov's gun principle if time magic never came up again.

 

To erase a timeline is a "death" after all, in a way. Unless separate universes are a factor but that's way too complicated to think about (and also the problem with utilizing time travel in any setting). I like the idea that tearing down the Veil might be necessary to do that time magic, in which case the current world would probably still devolve into chaos even after Solas has timewarped away to change the past, in a scenario we'd never see where he succeeded, that is. That's following the idea that this Thedas would still exist once he's gone to change things, though. Ugh, time travel is always such a mess of a trope. 

 

Gosh I have no idea if any of that made sense. I shouldn't think about these things on 2 hours of sleep.

I'd love to get a Dragon Age tattoo one day. The first one that I will get is a line from a song, though. My favourite song of all time that helped me through a lot of problems in my life. (The line "It's never that bad" from Lullaby by Nickelback - also my favourite band of all time.) Buuut my BFF is really scared of needles, so we'll get a tattoo together once she worked her way through her fear - hopefully.  Tattoos are awesome, though.

I don't think it's likely because, for me, I noticed and appreciated (since time magic/time travel can become both unwieldy, start violating its own principles, or simply become an excuse for creating plot holes) that the devs directly and definitively put limits on it. This was only possible because of the Breach and under certain conditions. That express, deliberate limitation, to me, made it seem clear this was it. Once those circumstances were gone, no more time holes.

 

I could be wrong but they were so deliberate in the limitation that I was glad.

Honestly? I think that's one of the reasons he keeps Lavellan at the distance. He's emotionally compromised and he knows that. What's more, he was severely betrayed before. Dunno if it was 'just' Mythal's murder, but something happened along the way that made him unable to trust - not even Lavellan. He's likely afraid that she'd eventually betray him - hah, maybe he's even setting things in a way that she'd try, which will only make matters worse, because she'd basically confirm his worst fears.

 

Honestly, I would rather not try and emotionally manipulate him - for a person who seemingly yearns for trust and finding kindred soul, yet is absolutely terrified of being hurt again, it would be the worst kind of betrayal (even if 'earned' by him going with his mad plan) that I suspect would profoundly destroy him.

You make good points. I think we can all agree that killing or stopping Solas is going to be really freaking difficult. If the best ammunition you have against him is his love, your ability to predict his sympathies, you need to be prepared to use that if you want to save the world. When it comes down to it, manipulating the poor guy is my absolute last choice, just as I'm sure destroying Thedas is Solas' last choice -- I mean he says he's only doing it because he sees no other way. I would choose Thedas over Solas, even if it meant being a dick to him. Solas already jumped the gun on the whole dishonesty and betrayal thing. It takes two to tango.

I think that, even if they do decide to go with "time travel" as Solas' ultimate goal, it's ultimately not going to work, either because the spell itself won't work, because we'll kill him first (for those bent on doing so) or because we'll manage to convince him not to do it and stay instead.

Can you just imagine if that's the tipping point? It would mean you have to have made the choice back in DAO to kill Leliana, and just how many did that for reals?

 

Do you suppose Solas's line of questioning the Inquisitor about if the anchor changed them was poking to see if maybe the Inquisitor is a Cole-ish spirit too? Eh. maybe not. I need more coffee for that to make sense in my head, but people had suggested that maybe the Inquisitor is actually a spirit taken form, so it's not entirely out of bounds.

1. Pledged it to Justinia. Nehneralen felt it was the best option to deal with Solas, even with risks of corruption, and my main reason for considering disbanding the inquisition was that it had no clear purpose, which has changed. And she thinks Leliana's work is important in its own right, though there are some concerns about what happens after Leliana.
2. Nope. I didn't really like any of the choices available there, to be honest.
3. Yes. It'll hurt when she stops being so angry, but she still can't put Solas above the world. Though I may change my mind depending how Bioware writes this option - I worry that "stop Solas by any means even if it means killing him" will turn into "Forget talking, Solas must die!"
