It was nice there was a bit more elven spoken between Solas and Lavellan at the end, but I wanted to see just what and how much and what precisely was said.

In light of all the feels posts a few pages back about how the game affects us in real life, I have a question. At what point do game developers become morally obliged to consider the mental wellbeing of their players? Games are getting more and more in depth and realistic (both in graphics and in character behaviour). As a medium they are unique in the way they can make someone feel personally involved in the story, more than any other form of storytelling.

I know that I've been in a complete stinker of a mood these past three days. If it were only related to Solas I would probably be ok (it would be that bittersweet, hurts so good kind of thing) but it's actually the let down I feel over Cole that is bothering me the most. Since that's a let down rather than a deliberate action on the devs part (as far as I know) it leaves a bad taste in my mouth and it's not at all enjoyable. I know that for some people they will be feeling the same way over Solas. If games continue down this path and become even better at manipulating peoples mood and emotions, when do they need to be like 'guys, this might actually hurt people?' on the darker outcomes? Do you think they think about stuff like that already?

If you killed Leliana in DAO then her epilouge reveals that she was a Fade spirit for the last 10 years.  Apparently.  Yet to find the slides myself.  And if this is true if - as Leliana says in DA2 - it wasn't her time to die then IS she being lead by some higher power?  Was she like Cole after being killed, a spirit who thought it was Leliana?

I actually love the idea of spirit!Leli though. At least, in her softened state, she's sweet and lovely and believing enough that I'd imagine she could inspire a spirit. One wonders whether Solas would have figured that out - perhaps that's why he trusted the organisation enough to turn himself in.

I made a post about it in the Cole thread so I'll just copy/paste. I wouldn't say I'm mad, just very very sad. I was probably too invested in him. It's a bit long, sorry

I got DAI a week before my dad died last year. It was a hugely anticipated game on my part and I didn't know how to outwardly grieve so I just kind of got lost in it. Cole and Solas in particular got me through some very hard times (and sometimes carried me through them) and it's kind of melded onto my brain in a weird way because of that. Maybe that's why I need to have this little rant and also why maybe I take this more seriously than I should. But I've invested time and emotion into this, dammit. I get to feel my feels, ok?

 

Disclaimer: I don't usually complain about this stuff. I really appreciate the work that goes into these games and I'm generally always happy with whatever the developers pull off. I've adored all three games (and the books and everything else) for lots of different reasons...but this just really kicked me in the stomach and I need to get it written down.

 

So, the whole Maryden thing blindsided me and I had to put my controller down for a bit to process it. At first I wasn't happy - Cole deserves better IMO - but I calmed down after a bit. In a way I guess it makes sense, though I would have appreciated the option for the Inquisitor to fill that role if that's the way it had to be. After all, she was the one who took him in, helped him, loved him and wanted him around. But whatever, maybe the devs thought it would be weird and maybe it would have been. But then I realised that Cole, my Inquisitors best friend in all the world, had nothing to say to her. Then I just got sad. The entire cutscene was short overall, and was basically Cole ignoring the Inquisitor and getting his girlfriends attention.

 

Later in the DLC, when I was chatting to people, every single companion had a dialogue wheel with at least one or two options (even Sera, whose personal quest my Inquisitor had refused to do) but Cole didn't even have a dialogue wheel. 

 

While exploring the DLC all my companions had things to say about what was happening and got at least 2 options to trigger dialogue while in the field. I got just one with Cole and it was a short one-liner. When Cole had his one bit of ambient dialogue, it was about bringing a rock back for his girlfriend.

 

All my companions had something to say or give to my Inquisitor - gifts, words of thanks, friendship, support, regret at leaving and so on. There was nothing from Cole. 

 

I just can't believe it. All the time my Inquisitor spent with Cole, learning about him, standing up for him, helping people and helping him to help people and there's nothing to acknowledge it in the epilogue?

 

Cole seriously affected me in the real world. He really brought home how important it is to help people in a very tangible way and I have noticed a significant difference in my behaviour and thoughts since I started playing Inquisition. I thought he was the most wonderful character I've ever met in a fictional world and he made me exquisitely depressed by highlighting how rare people like him actually are. Now I feel like that experience has been cheapened significantly. Either folk at Bioware decided that nobody likes Cole so they weren't going to bother with him at all, or they're trying to say something about human Cole - perhaps that he becomes selfish or ignorant to how he treats his friends? I'd honestly prefer the former, the latter makes me feel terrible (though from what I can see, spirit Cole is not much better in terms of content).

 

I just don't get it. I'm so sad. And I'm even sadder at the fact that this has seriously marred my enjoyment of the DLC. Everything else was great, amazing really, but it just couldn't distract me from this disappointment. Cole being used as an example several times in DLC promotion maybe got my hopes too high, but even without that, the Cole content in comparison to everyone else is just breathtakingly lacklustre. 

 

Last night I dreamt my Lavellan committed suicide   My poor Lavellan. Her companions and advisors all go off to do their own thing and she's lost her hand and her Inquisition. Her lover is trying to indirectly kill her and everything she knows. The cherry on top is that her best friend has basically dumped her for someone else. She seemed determined at the end but I don't know if realistically she'll be able to mentally overcome all of that.

I just saw the Morrigan statue on the Bioware store and I was wondering...if they ever made a statue of Solas, would you buy one? Even if it sucks your wallet dry? As someone who is geeky enough to own an anime 1/8 scale figure (Alter's renewal version of Natsume Takashi from Natsume Yuujinchou, to be exact - and I have three other figures on pre-order) I would seriously sell my soul to the Dread Wolf to own a statue of Solas. Seriously. 

 

I might, mostly depending on how it looks like. I already own some figures, well, mostly, L from Death Note (two) Nami from LoL and some Sonny Angels x Ladurée cause they're cute as hell. So it will really need to be super pretty, but yeah, I might. (Though, I mostly love cute figures, I'm a sucker for Good Smile Company ones, Nendoroids especially.)

100 PERCENT +++ Team Optimism after this DLC. Friends, there is nothing to be sad about. We will see our Quizzy again.

 

I'm convinced that if it was really over the devs. would have just let Solas accept our offer to join him and called it a day. Much like Anders, the decision would be anything but perfect but it would have allowed us to happily move on knowing they would face all the crazy together. 

 

The way Bioware ended it left a bunch of hints that Levellan would hunt down Solas at any cost and that he kept little doors open for her to change his heart. Also, I feel like the writing consistently implies that neither of them is willing to totally let go no matter what words are exchanged. The fact that Solas is watching her in her dreams and that her heart is set on changing his...well...they do just keep coming back for more. I'm reminded of the balcony scene where Solas reinitiates the romance when he could have simply let it go. He just can't walk away from this and neither can she and the writers want it that way. Love it and please gimme more Bioware. Even if my Quiz isn't driving the next game, I do believe she will have a part to play in dealing with Solas and I'm damn happy with that future. 

 

I view this as being the most epic romance of DA and I'm soooooo happy I blindly jumped on the Solas train when I picked up Inquisition that fateful Saturday afternoon back in March. Since then I have gone back and played all of Dragon Age. 

 

Also, my dream will come true. Elven revolt. My body is ready!!!!!!

I'm headed for real headcanon hell.

 

I made a comment yesterday about how after disbanding the Inquisition and making initial plans for the hunt for Solas part 2 that my Lavellan would have gone up to Cillian and asked him for directions to the Arcane Warrior shrine he found in the wilderness to train and figure out how to summon a spirit arm. I then realized that logically speaking no one would have thought it wise for Lavellan to travel way out into the wilderness and spend who knows how long in a forgotten shrine in the middle of no where. Especially this Cillian guy who would have shown her the way. I mean...I can just picture them standing at the door and Lavellan saying "Okay, you can go back now" and Cillian saying "Umm, no thank you. If something happens to you the Divine will put my head on a pike and display it for everyone to see." (My Divine is crazy Leliana who likes my Quizzy). To which it only makes sense that my "I don't want to see people get hurt" quizzy would have replied "Your right, Cillian, you should stay."

 

It then dawned on me that I sent my heartbroken, lonely "f****ck I gotta save the world from my immortal, retardly powerful ex-boyfriend" Lavellan to an ancient elven shrine with a male elf who she has probably been friends with for years at this point given that they are both arcane warriors and maybe have trained together with Commander Helene. Said male elf is also probably pretty good looking also just based on what appears to be the law of "Elves who find themselves near world changing individuals in Thedas tend to be freaking hot".

 

WTF kind of headcanon misery did I just run into. I mean....I don't know if I'm suppose to feel bad for my Lavellan....Solas....or Cillian at this point. I think Cillian because I'm pretty sure this is either rebound or friendzone territory......

 

....and some strange part of me wants to accept this these thoughts of mine. For the drama.

 

....I just want my Lavellan to be happy, but as a player I feel like I'm betraying Solas.......

I guess this is where my Lavellan having a super close, gay BFF just a crystal call away helps. Cole and Leliana are also close to her, though Cole went back to the Fade, but I headcanon he comes to her in dreams at times too, as Solas does. He wants to help them both.

 

During the two years, I headcanon she did a lot of things, threw herself into work, visited her family, and considered the possibility of moving on someday but she was in no rush to. But after this, she now knows just how deeply her heart is still in this.

Cole in the DLC (as a human) felt lackluster to me. My chars were always good with him but never as close as yours was, but I would feel that loss if, say, Dorian had ignore me.

I am sorry about your father. I'm glad though that you HAD dragon age to help you process. My sister in law lost her mom to cancer, dad six months later in a motorcycle accident and her older sister at easter of an overdose. I wished she would have had a outlet like gaming to help her, or at least distract her.

You know, a huge part of me hopes that in Thedas, Andraste and the Maker are the real thing and when all those stuck up human, racist a-holes wind up in the beyond, standing before the seat of the Maker and his Bride, they can have a wonderful conversation of how they used her name to conquer and destroy the lands Andraste herself had given to the Elves. I loved to hear there justification of the brutal subjugation of a people that had rose up to fight with her against tyranny and how they had forced their religion on them, even when Andraste herself had wished them to live with their own beliefs.

 

Then I hope the Maker kicks there asses right into the void.

High-five for Nendoroids love! I missed Card Captor Sakura's Nendoroid last year, I'm still sulking about it, it was so damn pretty! But welp, 'twas cause of the harsh life of a broke-ass student, it happens. Cynthia Nendoroid looks very nice, I love how they produce very high-quality figures, and still manage to make all characters utterly cute, while never betraying their essence.

I have a wish they, one day, will do Sailor Moon characters. That would literally be the death of my bank account. Though I doubt it'll happen, Bandai is far too protective of that license, even though so far they only produced low-tier figures than would never be able to compete with Nendoroids...

sacrifice the chargers and get Dorian and Bull together on a Solavellen playthrough? my first, imperfect playthrough of Lavellen did this.

 

I haven't played Trespasser yet with that game, but I imagine when I do, after Bull has turned on them and Solas has left her, Dorian will probably be the first to comfort her. He'll put her arm around her shoulders as she struggles not to cry, because helping her, the esteemed Inquisitor, makes Dorian feel less like a hole inside, and when they get back to the Winter Palace they get very, very drunk together. She'll be angry, so angry, about the Chantry, the Exalted Council, the Qunari, Orlesian politics, all the spies and infiltrators, and rant drunkenly about everything but Solas whilst he laughs because his friend is usually so restrained and cordial and declares that he quite likes this brand new Lavellen, maybe they should take on the world together. Then there'll be a moment of silence, a gap in the conversation, when they both realise what they've lost - and despite everything, despite the deceit and betrayal, they still love their lost love.

 

On another note - who did you bring with your Inquisitor, thinking they'd be there when you'd confront Solas? And who do you think will comfort your Inquisitor once you get back to the Winter Palace?
