I have a question about Solas' final master plan and would like some opinions. Solas says this world must die/burn essentially. Do you think that he literally means absolutely everyone is going to die and only ancient elves (or whomever he is thinking about) remain?

 

Or do you think it's a bit of a hyperbole. Meaning a lot of people are going to die in the chaos, governments scattered and broken, etc. He would then take advantage of this and restablish his empire.

 

My thoughts lean towards the second because

A. It's really difficult to kill everyone

B. They obviously had human and other people during the Artlathan

C. Hinting that Inquisitor may not survive would simply be that he know she will fight and it will be for naught.

 

Just looking for speculation.

I think we are going to see some more timey-wimey high-jinks.  When we choose the option "Why must this world die for the elves to return?" Solas answers with "A good question, and one I am not going to answer for you."  I think the he isn't answering the question because its part of the puzzle that the devs want us to explore in the next game- but my guess is that Corypheus' use of Dorian and Alexius' time magic triggered a plan B idea for Solas.  He lost the orb, so he can't create a new anchor like he tells us was his original plan.  So he cast about for a new plan and had a perfect solution already presented to him.  Remember how he thought that time magic was impossible, but how he cottoned on to it really quickly if you went to RedCliff to rescue the mages?  Clearly Alexius was unable to make the "go back in time and change the past" work properly, but Solas' magic is what created the possibility for previously theoretical magic to be viable at all.  With confirmation that this option can work, all Solas really needs is the time to figure out how to do it; then he can head back in time and stop himself from creating the veil and find another way to circumvent the Evanuris.  If the final slides in Trespasser are any indication, then Solas now has an army of elves to throw at countering the Inquisition/ Chessmaster spy network while he finds what he needs to make his plan a success.  I think that the 'this world must die' bit is probably more accurately described as 'I'm going to make it so this world never existed.'  Solas doesn't think of himself as a monster, and its difficult for me to imagine him being able to reconcile the literal burning of an entire world.

 

On the other hand:

He does say that he can't bear for Lavellan to see what he must become, so maybe he is going to drown Thedas in the flames of his revolution.  Or maybe he just couldn't bear for Lavellan to know that he is going to implement a plan which will effectively make it so that she never existed.  It's a toughie, and I'm excited to see whats in store for Thedas in the next DA

 If the time magic theory comes true, and Solas succeeds in stopping himself so that the veil never divides the world, how do you think this would impact the franchise?  Would it be the last Dragon Age?

Whilst I hate time manipulation being used in any fantasy/speculative fiction narrative which isn't already about time travel (it's got too much deus ex machina potential), I think it could work somewhat well in this case:

Solas casts time magic. Inquisitor manages to get sucked into it too. Both of them end up somewhere in the Elvhen Empire, pre-fall. Inquisitor then chases Solas. Inquisitor stops Solas from reaching his goal, somehow (this could be tricky - a character as powerful as Solas means that direct confrontation won't work if you're planning to kill him: what could happen is that Inquisitor could ally with an Evunaris to stop him instead). End result: nothing's changed, Solas is either dead/banished, or returns with the Inquisitor as the world begins to fall apart.

That way, we achieve something cool - visiting the Elvhen Empire, however briefly - without disrupting the setting too drastically.

However, I suspect the plan will probably not involve time magic. Corypheus could not return to prior to the breach. It's possible this magic is limited by the bounds of the system it exists in. Also, Solas is quite skeptical of the idea in Hushed Whispers. I think I'd prefer him to alter the reality he already exists in.

In any case, I don't think we'd get any elaborate time-altering scenarios. Maybe something will happen with time in Tevinter (considering that time magic is inked predominantly to it), but I'm not sure that it will be at such world-altering level.

Can't remember if it was pms or not but he was being exceptionally...trolly... anyway I got a 24 hour ban and a warning point for inappropriate language. and being right before release it almost killed me!

Just a thought about the next Dragon Age PC:

I think it's very possible that the next PC is still going to be the Inquisitor, because:

- In the end, everybody gets a pretty similar outcome. Inquisitor is alive, missing a arm, chasing after Solas (with or without the firm intent to kill him). That could explain why they didn't make it possible to follow Solas or get killed by him. 

 

-They say you need to get new people, some that Solas won't know about, and they're going to get reinforcement from Tevinter. This is a reason to get a new crew, and explain why most of the Inquisitor companions won't come back. I'm thinking Mass Effect 2 here, where they had Shepard disappear for 2 years, just to give her a new crew.

 

-That could be why it's called Dragon Age: Inquisition instead of Dragon Age 3. Because they wanted to make a trilogy, i'm thinking MAss Effect again, with the amazing popularity of Shepard. So we might have Dragon Age Inquisiton 1, 2, 3.

It may as well be something that's both metaphorical and literal. Crazy speculation time: what if stuff like faith, hope and dreams of life is a specific thing or... a person?

 

I vote that faith is Cassandra - she's been called Faith by Cole in banter after all. Her faith defines her and her abilities 'declare the world real'. Question is who 'hope' or 'dreams of life' may be?

 

... Gotta admit, kinda secretly wish that Quizzy is the embodiment of hope, as schmaltzy as it may sound. Maybe that's what Solas meant by saying that Lavellan has a 'rare and marvelous spirit'. Inquisitor would then be the LITERAL hope for this world.

For another, despite the seeds of doubt that he seems to display in DA:I and Trespasser, he has faith and hope that his plans will work and are needed and the new world will be good enough to be worth the cost. He has a dream of life-that-used-to-be and of life that can be restored, a dream to restore what he sees as “life” to a world where the people are not-people akin to Tranquil and basically not alive. And hell… if folk are to survive the change that is to come, they’ll sure af need faith, hope and dreams of life.

 

BUT I agree with your interpretation too. So many layers of potential meaning in each line damn bioware writers good at their craft. with your permission Illyria I'd add your tidbit on that line & credit you there of course.

Pretty strong argument to be made for quizzy being Hope.  That is one of the major themes of being Inquisitor: bringing hope to others, even if you yourself don't believe.  Making the world a better place simply by continuing to fight, even when it seems like a lost cause.

Oh my glob- how much fun would it be for the Inquisitor to play that scene?  If the next game does have a split protag, or at least gives us the ability to occasionally play scenes as Quizzy; this one would be so BADASS!  Especially w/ a romanced Lavellan.

Yes, but Solas' magic is what ultimately created the breach, and the intrusion of the fade (a place where time and substance are relative) is what allowed the timetravel to work.  Alexius could travel back anywhere in time up til the opening of the Breach, but he was stuck for anything before that because the time differentials caused in the waking world by the intrusion of the Fade were not present.  If Solas removed the Veil entirely, and then attempted to time travel, there may be a way to make it work.  I think Alexius lacked Solas' innate understanding of the Fade and the Veil, and the time magic was also affected by the fact that the Breach only allowed a little of the Fade to leak into Thedas, and thus his time spell capabilities were limited.  I think all Solas needs is time, and probably stuff that must be found/gathered/quested for (cuz, you know, RPG... magical quest items...  I can totally see Missions where Quizzy's spy network finds out that Solas is after item X, and we don't know what it does,  but clearly if he wants it, we need to get it first; so the new protag has to go on the actual quest to retrieve the item.) 

 

 

Of course, it could also just be that an avid fan of the last Time Lord like me is incapable of giving up the idea of Thedosian time travel.  My views are almost certainly colored by love of the good Doctor, even if I really think I'm keeping him out of head during specualtion like this
