Anyway... the more I think about it the more the shower of disapproval from companions and Cole's "Greatly Approves" by choosing the heart option after romanced Lavellan chases after Viddassala to save Solas is the devs usage of approval record system to drop us a pretty massive hint.

 

I mean.. when I began Trespasser I've had Cole's approval bar entirely maxxed. In base game this normally means that I don't see positive approval changes anymore - the 'x approves' doesn't appear on a screen... So how come it appears for Cole when I pick the heart option? I shouldn't be able to see it.

 

I'd like to believe it's devs shamelessly shouting to us "Yo! Continue on this path! It'll be so worth it later!"

 

.... buuut, it may also mean potential future consequences when it comes to friction that appears between her and her friends. Let's face it - Solas may be emotionally compromised, but so is Lavellan. She still admits to loving the guy who, for all intents an purposes, lied to her, used her, and was in relationship with her, while at the very same time he plotted to kill her and everyone else. There may not be much understanding between her and in fact there may be some falling out. (plus, well - she's an elf. We don't know yet why modern elves are rounded up somewhere and for what reason, but people would likely question her and her motivations even more.)

 

It's possible that this route may be terribly trying not just for her love for Solas and attempts to redeem him, but may even result in someone betraying her.

 

I mean, the possible betrayal of Inquisitor by, say, new PC or some important NPCs is pretty likely anyway, and the misunderstanding between Inquisitor who wants to change Solas' mind instead of outright killing him may exist as well, hence I don't think the arc is undoable from resources perspective.

 

For the same of drama, I'd like to see some friction. It would be interesting!

My canon is templar alliance so I've only played In Hushed Whispers twice, I think. The templar quest always appealed more to me, with the exception of one small moment.

My canon is mage alliance.  I like siding with the mages even though I enjoy the additional insights into Corypheus you get during the Calpernia quest.

Well we do know that Felassan knew. He died because he changed his mind about modern elves. Besides - considering how unnervingly honest Solas usually is (lol, he even tells what he's planning to do to the Quizzy he detests) I think at least most of people working for him know.

Aaaand he said the world was an abomination that must never come to pass. Sooo... is it just the nature of how the Veil was taken down that made things so bad, or did future!Solas realize his plan was stupid, but failed to mention that before sending Inquisitor back to their proper timeline. Hmm.

 

There is a line in Redcliff about this!!!!! I'm not going to spoiler it because it is base game.

 

When Dorian explains to him what happened when you let him out of his cell Quizzy can say "I'm glad you understood what he said because I'm not sure I did."

 

And he replies with "You would think such understanding would prevent me from making such mistakes but you would be wrong. This world is an abomination and should never come to pass."

 

Or well pretty dang close, it's my favorite line when I recruit the mages.

Right. I didn't necessarily mean an ending where we have to choose to stand by a blue orb, red orb, or green orb. But more that if we had the full picture and it was evident that Thedas as we know it was going to go up in flames regardless, what do you do? Solas said that the Evanuris would have destroyed the world if he hadn't acted. So... what if the world will die anyway unless he restores things to where they were? The magic that faded and let the crossroads crumble will finally fade so much that the rest of the world will unravel. Something like that. It then becomes a far more interesting situation.

So we will, essentially, be put in the very same position Solas was. There's some really sweet symmetry to that.

During the final council meeting, Arl Teagan accuses Solas of provoking the qunari to war.  Which is indirectly accurate.  The Viddasala also mentions that the agent of Fen'Harel, Solas, gave Corypheus the orb - while your party members are standing with you.  How the freaking hell she knows that I have no idea.  I'm still trying to figure out how she pieces Solas together with Fen'Harel unless the Qunari found some of his spies and interrogated them but even then I'm not sure how widespread the knowledge about the orb is among his own agents.  Other than some of his agents allowed the Venatori to find it.  Which is so indirect that I still don't know how the Viddasala put the pieces together.

Perhaps he's promised followers his protection from the coming end if they pledge their loyalty to him. Which, I reckon would probably be doable - someone's got to survive this mess, after all, and I imagine there are only so few ancient elven sleeper agents.

 

I think Solas would struggle with lying directly to his own people. What he can do is lie by omission, or twist the meanings of words. He couldn't speak of a future full of magic and freedom when they're definitely going to die. What he may do is speak of a future for 'the people', neglecting to mention who they are. When he offers them sanctuary from the oncoming storm, he'd omit that teeny tiny detail about him conjuring that storm in the first instance.

 

I'd like to believe that Solas wouldn't blatantly lie, but I'm also aware that I misjudged how calculated and determined he can be in Trespasser - Felassan's death being one of them - and so I'm afraid he might actually sink as low to spread false propaganda and allow others to perpetuate myths of godhood, as long as it leads to enough bodies he can use for his grand plan. Crossing my fingers on this one.

I think some of this is due to the Iron Bull connection. We recruit him knowing he is a spy for the Qunari. What was supposed to be obscure meaningless information was just enough for them to dig into what was truly going on. The very fact that Solas knows more than anyone else about the magic involved, the mark itself, and the orb were probably enough for an astute spy to put it together. I mean we did right? Even without spoilers I knew Solas was NOT a simple mage by the time I went Redcliff. Fade travels aside there was just way too much first hand reports from him, he was way too invested emotionally in the past, not as a simple historian but as someone that was from the past and hating his future. Not to mention the Winter Palace and he talks about how he'd forgotten how much fun courtly intrigue was. He gets po'd that you call him on his slip of the tongue because he almost gave his own secret away.

 

In the Temple of Mythal was more confirmation. "Elvhen such as you?" Abelas pretty much gave him away and I wish Bioware had given us the option to call him out on it again.

 

If we could see all that then didn't Iron Bull? He's very good at seeing the big picture and the little details. There is a comment Solas makes to   Quizzy. When they say "So we did your dirty work? "The mistake was yours to fix. Inquisitor."

I'm kind of still dealing with hellspiral mode.  I'm ok.  But still have way too many feelings about the entire thing.

Mostly I'm just really sad.  Sad that this is what Solas is up to.  Sad about the implications of where that means the series is going in general.  I anticipated it.  Heck we all that this pretty much figured out months ago.  It just breaks my heart.  Kudos to Bioware for making me feel so conflicted.  In a way I wish I could be like the folks that just want to murder knife him, because that would be easier in the long run.  I don't know if the intent is that he's the main antagonist now, but stopping him just has me all over the place.  There's no black or white for me.  So much grey.

Honestly I would help him remove the Veil.  The world doesn't seem to be better off with the way things are.  But at the cost of destroying everyone?  Yeah I can't really be supportive of that.  I'd like it if there was a way to help him that doesn't kill everyone.  But in light of that I chose wanting to help save him from himself.  My Lavellan didn't end the relationship, she told him she was going to save him somehow. 

 

Not a popular choice, and I understand why, but I chose to keep the Inquisition as an Honor Guard for Divine Victoria.  Determined to prove Solas wrong in as many ways as possible.  Part of me goes what if he WANTS the Inquisition to disband because it would make it easier for his plans.  But yeah I see why most people feel it's better to disband it.

 

Me too, I'm really conflicted about everything right now. I have no words to express the feels... I guess I'd say I'm hellspiralling, but in a better way than I was before the DLC XD

I'm glad to know what Solas's plan is, and to have seen him again. I seriously thought they were just going to drop it all at where the game ended, and we'd have to play as a new protag without Lavellan ever being able to have confronted him. I just hope we'll be able to continue as the Inquisitor in the next game. 

 

The only reason I actually disbanded the Inquisition was because that's what I've wanted to do since the final events of the game (well, before Tresspasser). The Breach had been sealed, and all my Lavellan really wanted was to find Solas before he did something stupid. As far as what would work better against Solas, I think both choices have their pros and cons.

As a player, I couldn't be happier with Solas as a character.  I either wanted him to be a badass and worthy villain, or an excellent romance for Lavellan.  I never in a million years dreamed I'd get both, and a chance for quizzy to redeem him to boot!  I mean, I have a few small nitpicks, but currently he's one of my favorite BioWare characters ever.  He inspires so many emotions in me.  And romancing him with my Lavellan lets me showcase one of her best character traits: her unerring ability to empathize and believe in others.

For a second, I was really scared Solas was going to act like he didn't love Lavellan. I was so relieved when he showed that he still cared XD ...even if he did basically say that the Inquisitor's going to die in his quest for elven glory... or something, he's sketchy on the details... *ahem* anyways, love the direction they've taken the story. I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO ROMANCE A VILLAIN haha. He's one of my favorite Dragon Age characters, especially after everything that's happened. And DEFINITELY the best Dragon Age villain so far, because we've had the chance to get to know him so well. It isn't often a game gives us that opportunity. Anxious to see where it all goes!

As a player, I'm pumped to see where this go. Solas is extremely well-written and well rounded in my mind and his character-arc is so tragic. It's a bit of storytelling catnip to me

 

As for my Lavellan, it's pretty strange actually. When I came up with her character, I'd already completed one playthrough so I knew who Solas was. So, I made her with a fascination for ruins and the past of Arlathan and a taste for knowledge. A hunger to know the truth behind the myths. I was more than ready to have her disappear into the sunset with Solas and become a villain right alongside him (guys in this thread had already started theorizing about his plans, and I knew they couldn't be good).

 

And then, it happened. through the in-game choices she took wings and... ended up totally different than I imagined. She worked extremely hard to give almost everyone a chance. She would sacrifice for friends, even if it meant nixing an alliance (Bull's quest). She went from a very reluctant figurehead to a competent leader by the end of the main game, and only grew more in that role in the two years prior to Trespasser. She cares about the people she worked so hard to save. She cares about the change she started (about the mages, about the elves of Orlais with Briala). change is slow, but she's behind it all the way. More than anything, I found she had a complete belief in people. She always believe they can be redeemed. Thom Rainier, the wardens... heck, even Florianne was sent to live with the peasants to learn they have worth too, and hopefully change.

 

So when it came to the confrontation with Solas at the end of Trespasser, I knew she would never abeg to follow him, as she could already see his plans were misguided. And also senses he wants, and needs someone to oppose him and show him he is wrong. And so, because she can't stop believing he is redeemable in spite of what he's done and plan to do (else, it would mean her whole world view is wrong!), and because she can't give up on him, she chooses the option to save him from himself.

 

I really like the fact my Lavellan ended up a 100 miles from where she started as a character and managed to surprise me so much.

I never would have thought of it that way, that Solas needs someone to remind him of the good in him. I have a habit of giving people what they say they want, instead of what they probably need.

 

That's my favorite part of the Dragon Age games, you find your character developing in ways you never anticipated. The characters I make will even have romance preferences sometimes: I'll create a character for Morrigan, and then realize they actually like Leliana (which actually sucks when you're going for trophies lol).

My Lavellan is trying to find him and join him, the world be damned. She hopes she doesn't have to betray her own people, but is ready to do so if she must. 

 

I chose to try to change his mind.

 

Then as a player, I'm very conflicted. About a month before DLC came out I posted that the saddest scenario for me was seeing him get to a point where he has to compromise the very moral principles he upholds... And that's exactly what happened, the way I see it. On the one hand I see his admirable personality, and on the other I see his actions I completely disapprove of. So now I just try to distance myself as much as possible from the character and see him as a very interesting character. A very skilled player whose maneuvers can be very entertaining to observe.

I don't know why, but this made me very sad XD I know what you mean though. Unfortunately, I'm not very good at distancing myself from characters. After years of rooting for the Decepticons, you'd think I would have learned my lesson by now.

I've been wondering about this as well. He recognized her as kin in the base game, he's very much in love with her and claims that she's quite like the elves from pre-Veil times - it should logically follow that if he loves and respects her, he should give her as much of a chance to survive as he would to other elves, if not more.

 

I don't think it's as simple though. We don't yet know many details, though I have to admit that the whole meeting with Solas in Trespasser for me seemed like it was more than just him dealing with the Qunari 'nuisance' and drawing Quizzy so he could save them... I mean, why he'd save them in the first place? He says that he doesn't want unnecessary bloodshed, but there has to be more to this than that. He says that he KNOWS that Inky will oppose him - and I totally don't buy that he'd just dismiss Inquisitor, now that their unique powers are gone (together with their hand) and Inquisition is either disbanded or smaller.

 

He does say that he always respected liked Inquisitor's thoughtfulness hence 'it would be too easy" to reveal everything to them. It means that he's pretty much convinced that they'd try and stop him.

 

This is why I think Solas is actually the one who's setting the stage in more ways than we currently know of - he wants Inquisitor either his nemesis, or as someone who can prove him wrong and fight for this world: maybe it's his way of giving Thedas an actual fighting chance.

 

Or maybe it's something else...? The minds of ancient would-be gods work in pretty mysterious ways, as we know from case of both Solas and Flemythal. They're observing, testing and nudging or shoving history when it's necessary, in an elaborate game for the fate of this world... Question is whether Inquisitor is still a pawn, or the actual player?
