By preventing Mordin from completeing the cure and thus from dying. Don't you also end up having to kill Wrex after he finds out your deal with the salarian diplomat? If that's the case, you end up saving Mordin at the expense of killing Wrex. They also did this in this game, Hawke vs a gray warden that could very well be Alister. Writers are sadistic not only to their characters but to their fans as well.

I have completely given up on trying to keep up with this thread. It moves too fast for me to read back more than two or three pages. Forgive me if this is rambly and random, I'm kind of on limited sleep.

I've seen some sort of redemption through death thing coming for Solas from the beginning. Pretty much all of the theories I had about him, (except the Felassan one where he took his body) were spot on, which I feel immensely cheered over. Perhaps the rest will pan out, too.

 

This is horrible, but I kind of enjoy seeing him suffer on a certain level, and I feel like that since the future plot (or I believe it is suggested to be, via two separate prophecies) hangs heavily on him successfully removing the veil and releasing the Evanuris, I want some sort of other horrible thing to happen, like he finds out that Mythal was playing him for a fool all along acting out her plans, or he has to see Lavellan die for what he did and live with it for all eternity, depowered and broken, or even that the Elvhen turn on him and don't accept his glorious plan.

 

I would love it if say you end up in DA4 finding one of the Forgotten Ones - say, Geldauran - and he knew Solas because he was the one who put him in prison, and hey you need help defeating him, oh ho ho. There are so many possibilities for the next game. It's going to be amazing.

... Well, that took the wind right out of my optimism flag. 

 

It's not down and out though. Maybe they won't do it again because they figure fans will expect it? Maybe they'll want to stretch their creative hand instead of just writing the same thing over and over. I can't speak for other writers, but while I enjoy revisiting familiar themes, characters and concepts, I also tend to like writing new things every once in a while.

Well... they're already walking that path, don't they?

 

We all pretty much thought that Inquisitor's time in franchise is pretty much over and that she/he would at best turn up in next title as a footnote or a cameo. Turns out that's very likely NOT the case. Instead of sending Inquisitor away with a bang (or a wimper), they propose a frikking new arc for them - and an important one at that (Corypheus was a small fry compared to this one). So they've already broken the mold of what was expected from them - question is how much they'd break it in the future.

 

(btw. I don't necessarily cling to a hope that both Solas and Lavellan will survive and ride away into sunset. I wouldn't mind even if both of them died, as long as it was some sort of satisfying end).

That he considers so much to be his mistakes and is encumbered by guilt for every wrong thing he's done is another issue. I'm a neurotic perfectionist - I know something about beating myself to a pulp for the tiniest of things. And we've seen other characters in Inquisition also beating themselves for things they realistically had little control over - Varric for unleashing Coprypheus on the world and Cassandra for not convincing Varric to give location of Hawke. That itself doesn't mean that they should be punished for those mistakes in an extent they think they should, or that punishment would be proportionate for the actual extent of their guilt.

Hello again lovely ladies! I mostly lurk, but I'm in such an emotional stupor (Thanks, Weekes!) that I must needs crawl into the blanket fort.

 

Also, do any of your beautiful brains have a thought on these thoughts?  (Spoilered for safety.  Some references to codices and info gleaned from Trespasser).

1) That it was the titans that created the Blight.  We know the Earth (Titan?) song is different from the Fade song and in Trespasser there is a codex that suggests

That the Elvhen were spirits who entered the world and made physical bodies for themselves, and that this freaked the titans right the hell out.  So that the Blight was a weapon to be used against them.  That is, in essence, a concentrated Earth-song so loud that it drowns out the Fade-song the Elvhen were tuned into.  Implying, too, that the Earth-song is, by definition, a sort of collective consciousness.

 

2) That the dwarves were the witless, soulless workers of the titans that Andruil was hunting in the void.  If the titans were awake at the time of Elvhenan, then the dwarves at that time would be keyed right in to the Earth-song (witless) and completely tuned out of the Fade-song (soulless). To the Elvhen perspective, anyway.  At some point, the titans fell quiet and the dwarves began to develop on their own.

 

3) Lyrium.  The physical equivalent of Fade magic.  Not actually fade made physical, but a sort of counterpoint to it.  One which made magic performed in the world (ie: half Earth half Fade) by beings already Fade-tuned made them way more powerful.  Ok.  So, the titans, somehow restrained by the evanuris (their great war?) use the elvhen's desire for lyrium against them, by tainting it.  Like, haha, now your magical Earth stuff is BELLOWING our song, bwahaha.  IF the elvhen were using the neophyte dwarves as lyrium-mining slaves whom they then sealed underground when they realised the titans were them via tainted lyrium...

 

4) Archdemons.  Per JoH, they're essentially great big dragons being possessed.  So far so good.  What if (assuming the Earth-song Fade-song thing is correct), the two more-or-less cancel each other out in direct contact?  IF dragons are essentially the most powerful physical manifestation of Fade-based magic in the world, wouldn't they be ideal weapons to use against Titans?  IF the titans are controlling the blight as a means of subsuming or chasing off all these shrieky, annoying Fadey things that had the gall to take over their territory, then might the dragons have been a means of controlling the Titan's song?  Ie: the archdemons are not jailed, they're jailors.  Which is why killing them all is BAD.  They were trying to use humans to free the evanuris because they realized that the Blight was still active.  They tried to have peeps bust into the Golden City (either it was their prison or the key to dropping the veil) only to have it backfire.  They went silent to humans thereafter because humans were no longer of use to them.

 

5) Vallaslin.  IF the dwarves (and/or later darkspawn) were the hive-minded servants of the titans and IF the titans and the Elvhen warred against each other...were the vallaslin originally created to counterbalance the titan's advantage?  The titans could instantly know what any of their subsidiary parts do, and the Elvhen were a bunch of disparate elements with imperfect communication and sharing of knowledge.  Until some of their generals developed vallaslin, which they gave to all of those not powerful enough to be useful on their own.  And when they discovered just how powerful they were with all these slaves, they kept the system going after the war had ended.

It's a dangerous business, Bilbo Bagins, theorizing after an emotional stunner.

Hey guys, sure redemption can be both death and life. It all depends on the redeeming. I do not believe that Solas needs to die to be redeemed but it's a possible outcome. Solas is intelligent and sensitive so it can go the OTHER way too. He admits that he hopes Quiz can change his mind and I believe he means it. He was always the "shades of gray" character in DAI so his mind can be swayed. 

 

Personally, I think Solas dying is just too...obvious. I'm more interested in what he becomes if he changes his position and chooses life. I'm not too attached to happy endings, but after the DLC I do see a possible positive outcome for the romance. As corny as it sounds in writing, love can influence/overcome many many things. I'm thinking of novels like Kite Runner at this moment.

 

So call me too optimistic, but I think we have a chance to save him without killing him. Living would be a heavier burden for him anyway if it meant accepting the modern world. That's where his redemption lies. In accepting the now and learning from his mistakes rather than erasing them. He will need Levellan to help him do that.

Call me selfish, but I'd rather punish him by making him live with his crimes than letting him slip gently into the night to avoid the guilt of it. (T'is why I spared Anders.)

 

Also, I don't want to live without him. Assuming his goal fails (which it most likely will), the elves won't regain their immortality, and our Lavellans will grow old and die. If he wants to die soon, I'd rather he hold out for another forty to sixty years (which, for an ancient, ageless immortal, is just forty to sixty seconds), until my girl dies of old age. Then he can lay down beside her and go into uthenera (the eternal sleep) as her spirit leaves her body, and they can travel into the great beyond together.

 

He gets to die to atone for his sins in this century and not die alone, but my girl gets to hold onto him for as long as she can for her natural lifespan.

 

Boom. Everyone's happy.

I don't know... I personally think Solas is being a bit dramatic and hyperbolic when he says "he killed his people to save them."

 

Really? Are modern elves so poorly off that the modern world really is just a sea of tranquil? Are elves really so morally and spiritually lobotomized that destroying this world is the only reasonable solution to help them?

 

Of course not. That's why the Inquisitor is trying to stop him.

 

What he did was terrible and had terrible consequences, but it's not worth destroying this world to fix, and it's not worth dying over.

 

I just... *sigh* I want him to live.  And I want us to be together.

Oh my god trust me, I want him to live as well. I want him to grow old with my Lavellan and their 4.7 elf kids in a hut in the Dales. I want him to tell stories to little Felassan Lavellan about Arlathan and how spirits roamed freely and everything was beautiful. 

 

While I want this, I also see the wrongness in it. Solas doesn't really belong in modern Thedas, imo. It's almost as if he's from a different world, trying to find his home, but it's already gone. 

 

And here I come back to my poetic justice theme. 

 

As much as I don't wish it to be true, it would make sense for him to join his people in death. I hate it, but I can't not say it's a probable ending, especially for Weekes. 

 

Now on the optimistic side, if we can convince Solas to truly see the beauty of the modern world than it would make sense that he lives, so he could experience the new beauty for himself. His death really relies on his ability to accept, but considering his past and the circumstancse and all the hints proving otherwise, that could be unlikely. 

 

I think he'll accept that the modern world has beauty, but he'll still feel like his home is superior and where he truly belongs, and that will be his doom.

 

Pride killed the cat (wolf). That line should be a thing.

 I think from his point of view, he hasn't earned his death. Solas is all about actively fixing what he sees as wrong, so for him to die before he has completed his task would be very painful. For this same reason, I don't think he expects to die immediately after he has completed his plan. He's already made one mistake and wasn't around to fix it early on. Whatever happens with the world when the Veil's gone, he will make sure to be around to see the change through. 

 

Death would be a relief for him if he comes to accept the world as it is, and does not feel like it needs changing.

 

But I think the best redemption for him would be just to put him to work: Not as a god-like figure pulling everyone's strings. Just do the work of a regular mage, maybe become a healer, maybe do research, build things... Basically lots of community service. Learn the power of small, methodical, positive changes over a long, long period of time. If he's not stripped of his power but is just working this way willingly, that would be best. He won't be completely at peace, but it's fitting that he feels regret, and that will go away a little with time.

I really wanna join Solas, especially since I agree with taking down the veil, though I know the moral-wrongness of doing so. 

 

I wish I could make a Lavellan like me. She would be just like Solas and they would be analytical, depressing, poetic a**holes together.

Or maybe he doesn't even have to prefer the modern world over his own.  Maybe he just has to see that he doesn't need his old world to be happy and fulfilled.

 

I can understand his longing for his home, and his bitterness at having lost it.  But he does get a few moments of genuine happiness in Inquisition--and all of those revolve around friendship and love.  His bond with Cole.  His deep (and unexpected) regard for Cassandra.  And of course, his genuine love for Lavellan.  I'm probably rambling now because I've been reading Harry Potter and I'm still on pain meds, but I think a good restructuring of his priorities (love and friendship over restoration and power) would go a long way toward changing his heart.
