Yes, I did, and having not played DA2, I didn't not understand it at first, but found it very funny and peculiar. Then at lunch today, I was talking about Sandal's prophecies (cause I knew about them even though I didn't know about his love of saying "Enchantment!", that's what I get for lurking these forums too much) to my boyfriend (who has played all DA games), and he was like "But, isn't that the character that only says "Enchantment!" all the time?". He didn't know about Sandal's prophecies, but he knew about enchantment, I didn't know about enchantment but knew about the prophecies. When he said that, I remembered finding that peculiar codex entry and just started laughing about how awesome the Bioware team can be (very loudly in the restaurant, but that's another problem).

 

Maybe it's time I played the previous game, but damn does it feel difficult to get into them everytime I try (well, for DA1 that is). They aged a lot, not in a good way. Maybe I'll just watch Let's Plays.

For me Sandal is very interesting character since the first game. How his ''father'' just found him and somehow he always manages to get everywhere.. I highly think that there is a deeper meaning for him XD I love him.

Aaaand he said the world was an abomination that must never come to pass. Sooo... is it just the nature of how the Veil was taken down that made things so bad, or did future!Solas realize his plan was stupid, but failed to mention that before sending Inquisitor back to their proper timeline. Hmm.

The veil coming down in the bad future was horrific and it was causing spirits to become demon.  The world itself is a mockery of the one Solas wants to create.  Also, was it actually down or just torn very badly?  Because if it was still present in some form that may have been what Solas found so abhorrent.

 

However, I'm also working on a fic in which dark future Solas realises that his plan is just terrible and gives Lavellan the information she needs to stop him in the past.

Anyway, I have a few questions/thoughts

Silly question nr 1: Do you think Solas can actually take the form of a wolf if he wants (shapeshifting)? I was thinking it would be funny if they were looking for him with their entire network of spies, and he's just in a wolf form nobody would suspect, and going like "lolz I'm here, woof!"   

Somewhat more intelligent question: Since Skyhold is where Solas first created the Veil and where the Veil is strongest, do you think he will eventually have to come back there to tear it down? This thought has me hoping

Third question... I went with disbanding the Inquisition, but the more I think about it, the more I'm starting to wonder whether this is the best course of action for a Lavellan who wants to find Solas.. Sure I don't want to become a corrupted organization, but it says "Efforts against Solas". I wonder what that really means. Against as in "trying to stop him", or against as in "putting more effort into finding him?".

I went with disbanding the first time cause my Lavellan is upset at humans and wants to be no more a puppet to those whiney Fereldans and Orlesians..and because I didn't want to make efforts "against" Solas since I'm not entirely sure what that meant.
What did you guys pick and can you justify your decisions? I'm not sure what to pick as my canon..

- Btw, my Lavellan kinda agrees with his plan XDD specially after how Humans treated her after she saved the world. Though she would like to help him find another way to do this without bloodshed if that's possible. She even asked him to let her come with him, but he said no, cause it's too dangerous. But then he's calling all elves around Thedas it seems.. so don't I count as an elf? Silly egg...

I'd think the Mythal supposedly made the moon is the key.  It's quite possible this is just metaphor or PR, unless we also believe that Elgar'nan is the literal child of the sun, and that they are not uber-powerful Elvhen as Solas suggests.

 

My interpretation of it was that the spheres were the Earth and the Fade.  The eclipse is them coming back into alignment.  Ie: it's the severe weakening of the veil that woke Solas.

 

Yeah I agree, we can't know for sure.

Haha. I expected them to take the 'shortcut' from Leliana's loft in the last one. Disappointed! But still funny. Tiger Festival could never resist splashing about in the puddle in the courtyard by the stairs. Everytime I zoned into Skyhold she had to hop around in that thing. Must be an elf thing.

Does anyone else have the impression that Solas, with his doubts, may actually be less dangerous than Flemeth/Mythal who's bent on vengeance for herself and for the world that was betrayed?  You might be able to sway Solas from his course, but not Flemeth/Mythal.  And Sandal's prophecy implies that Solas's apparent plan will come to fruition regardless of our actions.

I'm not sure about Mythal/Flemeth but I think the key to save this world is to convince Solas that this world needs to be saved and I believe that is possible because he is capable of listening. It might be that he doesn't understand this world and that's why he doesn't value this world and  if you are able to show him the good sides of this world then he might abandon his mission. It might also be that he doesn't think clearly and he doesn't see that there is no point in trying to restore the elvhen empire and it would be better to accept it and move on. I also think that there might be another solution where both of these worlds can coexist but he just doesn't see that and you will have to make him see and show him the other solution.

everytime i think about what he wants to accomplish I have to remind myself that he's not actually a crazy sociopath and that he has good, legit reasons to do what he does. 

 

Sometimes I wish he was just plain evil. That'd be so much easier to deal with.

Theory on Solas and the Black City

Solas created the Golden City when he created the veil.  It's either a prison for the evanuris or the key to upholding the veil.  It's omnipresence in the Fade is so that Solas can wander there at will and still keep an eye on it.  The whole turning black business was a sort of intruder alert, letting Solas know that it had been breached.  He was the one who threw the magisters in the deep roads and made them forget what, exactly, had happened.  They eventually became tainted there.  When Solas woke, he realised one of these magisters was still kicking around.  He knew that Corypheus had designs on godhood and that he had enough power (and knowledge of blood magic) to unlock the orb, since he'd managed to enter the Golden City.  And when Corypheus died in the resulting explosion, it was the merest comeuppance (not of the hugging kind) for attempting to enter the golden/black city.

By the way, one thing the DLC did to me is kill my love for fluff. It's all about love, death, morality, and scheming lately. I think about adorkable Solas owning a bakery and suddenly it feels wrong.

So do you think the adorkable Fade nerd was ever there? Was it truly a part of who he was? I think he was acting as naturally as possible during his time with the Inquisition, but I may have misinterpreted a lot of his words and actions.

I miss the adorkable Fade nerd. He will probably not be making an appearance again the way this is going

I believe 100% that the adorkable fade nerd was him (but I also believed he'd never killed Best Elf...).  I said it earlier in the thread and I'll say it again: being with the Inquisition let him be Solas for the first time in thousands of years.  He didn't need to be the rebel leader - The Dread Wolf - he could just be himself again.

How long was Solas organising this?  He woke up a year before Inquisition, but he must've been working from within the Fade for years (maybe from the time Briala first met Felassan).  Did he see the changes that happened in Thedas over that period or did he go from a deep sleep (where he was completely in the Fade and chilling with spirits) to a lighter sleep in the last couple of decades (where he was more aware of what Thedas had become and started making his plans to end it) to waking up entirely a year before Inquisition?

- Calpernia as DA4 companion, yes, yes a thousand times yes. I want her in my team, I want to see more of her, that character is too interesting to be left in a corner.

 

- I hope Weekes and the DA team won't fully and exclusively go on the "redemption in death" path for Solas. It's an overused trope, it's boring, it's easy, it's been done countless of times, it conveys a mindset that I do not align with, and Solas deserves better than to be stuck in that role so many characters have played before him. So far, the DA saga wasn't one who would easily lean on overused stereotypes to tell their stories and to give their plotlines resolution. I hope the story of Solas wouldn't be the first to disappoint me in that area.

i definitely agree..it is very cliche/stereotype for him to die, done a million times/boring and an easy way out. Its like im already seeing the end of his plot in the next installment and say "oh well we knew he would end this way since dai, he was stated to be a very tragic character, totally expected ".
Also, he, as a character has shown great potential to see the true value in this world and start adapting to it by really genuinely caring and helping through this world problems (a vibe i dont get from mythal, she still uses everyone as a tool, she seems more emotionally (in terms of caring) blinded than him in her vengeance scheme, and thats why i totally prefer him over her), and atone himself in staying alive by trying to help in this timeline. So, message getting through by this character, is people can change and can make a better difference around them alive, atoning through their actions if they really mean it as a result of their past mistakes guilt

I agree with all this. Calpernia (along with Scout Harding) top my list of favourite possible companions for DA4.

And yeah to your second point as well - I'm all for death being an option, but please, please not the only one. It's partly because I also find the 'death = redemption' thing to be a bit overused if not pitched very, very well (although I do trust that PW would do it pretty well, he is such a good writer), and partly because I just really, really want the possibility of something on the sweeter side of bittersweet - but also because enforced death would mean Lavellan being essentially left by Solas for a third time. Speaking personally, that runs the risk of being less tragic and more, well, aggravating.

 

Assuming the Inquisitor does play some sort of role in DA4, any Lavellan who hasn't dumped Solas will have made a significant investment into the romance - as will the players playing her. At the risk of sounding a little 'entitled' (which I guess I'm about to do, sorry) and being kind of meta-gamey - I can't help but feel that some sort of payoff would be nice, given all that commitment, and a payoff beyond 'Solas dies, Lavellan grieves but eventually moves on'. Honestly, if death has to be a thing, then I would at least like there to be an option where Solas can become/return to being a spirit, and Lavellan can do the same thing ('rare and marvellous spirit, after all) and they both kind of head off together that way. Death but not, kind of thing.

 

Question for people who've read Masked Empire (sorry, my lore is patchy):

When Felassan is killed (in the Fade, right?), does that definitely mean his body is dead too? We can kill Feynriel in the Fade in DA2 and make him tranquil, presumably because he's a Dreamer? Is it confirmed that Felassan is not also a Dreamer? Just wondering, because Felassan would make another amazing companion in DA4 and a really good 'weapon' against Solas whether on the 'save' or 'stop' path. We know that the Seekers know how to reverse the rite of Tranquility (I'm presuming that research has continued into that). So if his body isn't dead, we could .. find him and .. untranquilise ... him, and then Best Elf could be in our party too *puts hopeful hat on*. Calpernia and Scout Harding and Felassan = best cast ever except for no Dorian.

Sandal canonically dreams.  And his dreams are of Mythal.  I think the theory that she's more dangerous, has a further reaching plan and is possibly manipulating Solas are dead on.

 

'He left a scar when he burned her off his face'.  If this is about Solas and Mythal: what if it's not a physical scar but a scar on the soul?  What if he's still bound to her in some way, and maybe isn't aware of it?  This would be why he is completely against drinking from the Well.

I feel the need to reiterate the point that

He says the world will die, he doesn't say "everybody"/"people", and then goes and says "if they must die" regarding helping against the Qunari, as well as "restore the world of my time", also with this

 

 

And the fact Sandal was in the Shattered Library, "everyone will be just like they were".

 

I really like to think that bringing down the veil will have a side effect of "killing the world" and it won't be a direct affect, more like killing the world as we know it.

The world of his time died, many people died because of what he did, but it seems it is mainly true for those who were at the crossroads at the time, the death of his world means the death of his culture, knowledge, the ability to will and shape things.

 

So perhaps what he means that bringing down the veil will change everyone and not all could grow accustomed to it, just like people at the crossroads who just (I assume) starved to death after the path crumbled, maybe some will turn like Pharamond, unable to control their feelings, some will lose control over their own magic, who knows what will happen to all those who never practiced magic? Or those who did? Those who aren't willful enough? Those afraid of spirits and demons? These things alone could tear the world apart.

Plus, I don't think he only wants the elves to exist again, I think he wants to restore their vastness and greatness, so this would be follow by war? Driving away people from lands so they can take them for their own. That could be the reason he calls for all of the elves in Thedas.

 

When asked why the world has to die for the elves to return, he answers:

 

"A good question, but not one I will answer"

 

If the veil would just kill everyone wouldn't he just... tell? The Inquisitor already thinks what he wants to do is monstrous, telling them the truth, that the collapsing of the veil will kill those aren't accustomed to it wouldn't really make what he is about to do any or less worse in the eyes of the Inquisitor (because it seems what we are lead to think is that the collapsing itself will kill all anyhow). Maybe it is... so when it does collapse, the Inquisitor would not have an inkling of what to do, they wouldn't be prepared. Solas doesn't want them to be, because it would ruin his plans.

 

It could be that he plans use of time magic, but it seems like he didn't know time magic could exist, and if we chose to go with Champions of the Just instead of In Hushed Whispers it means he hasn't even been exposed to the idea. We already know he only lies by omission, he seems fascinated by the idea of time magic when we first meet Dorian and feels the need to ask the Inquisitor if they are certain it was time travel and not an illusion.

So while it could be valid, it lacks proof. I also kind of dislike the idea, because for some reason it just feels wrong erasing thousands of years of history. I remember how Leliana spoke in Redcliffe, it may have been a year for him in this world but the elves who were slaves its' been thousands, it was real to them, he just awoke to a nightmare, I pity him, really, but it's still very very wrong.

I also don't see the need of amassing so many elves if he will just travel back in time afterwards, why the effort? It will only draw more attention to him, I saw people speaking of blood magic but since practicing blood magic makes it harder to enter the Fade I'm not certain he would go on that route, I also kind of wonder if it affects entering the Raw Fade as well. He says he is no monster, he wants to ease the way for those now alive until the return of his people, I really can't imagine him sacrificing the blood of thousands of souls.

There is also that conversation with low disapproval you get with Solas in which he speaks of dropping the veil and shaping things casually as a way to help the elves, if I remember correctly?

 

Now, I'm really trying to figure out how so many of the ancient elves were left and how come they didn't all turn into non-eternal elves. What prevented them from becoming part of the Dalish? What made the rest of the elves lose their eternalness?

 

How the veil affected humans, they just appeared from the north, did they even exist before? If they indeed just existed in Par Vollen, maybe they used magic as well... To build all those pyramids...
