I didn't love the hobo outfits but I liked them soo much better than the updated wardrobe.  I know I'm in the minority but those pants FREAK ME OUT.  I mean...it seems pretty unrealistic to have thighs like that. Like pouring thighs into a thigh mold.

Wouldn't it be unfair if Solas haters get exactly what they want while the best fans can hope for is redeeming death and a bittersweet ending?

 

I would somehow see that as passing judgement on the fans...

 

He's a very complex character that needs a complex ending. 

 

 

I'm going to share the Team optimism that my husband shared with me and I'm hoping that Bioware honors it. I'm about ten pages behind so this might have been covered.

Mordin wasn't a romanceable character.  Solas is.  This alone changes the parameters of how they can treat the two characters.  The fan response for Solas has been enough that the likelyhood is there won't be a single way to redeem him and death doesn't have to be an option.

 

And really my thoughts....

If an inkling of what the lore is hinting at is true this would be the worst ending I could think of to give Solas.

1. He's taken from the fade at least partially against his will.
2. He himself was a slave to Mythal.
3. When he stopped being a slave he worked on freeing slaves.  I think this was possibly at Mythal's request because of how the other God's were acting.
4. If that's true even though he is no longer 'serving' Mythal he is still serving Mythal.  
5. Mythal dies and while there is a revenge aspect he also has to sever their power base so at huge personal cost to himself he creates the veil.  
6. After spending possibly 1000 years in a dream state - which can't be awesome
7. He wakes up to a world that is so radically changed that he doesn't recognize it.  
8. He starts punishing himself for doing what he did - even if it was for the service of his people/Mythal.
9. He keeps punishing himself even though for the first time in his life he has found happiness with a friend or lover.
10. He spends two more years punishing himself for what he did all the while trying to figure out how to fix it.  (In the worst way possible)
11. Should he manage to accomplish a fraction of it he will continue to punish himself.

What that poetically says to me is that he's had the short end of the stick his entire life and if Bioware only gives us an honor death option for him it tells me that the only way to redeem oneself is to die. And that their is no other way to turn your life around, if you've had crap cards dealt that's all you'll get in life.

 

And I just can't see them saying that.  I just can't.  My optimism refuses to see it!

On Thane: Yes it sucked, but BioWare admitted later that Thane's writer (Chris l'Etoile?) left, either after ME2 or part way through ME3, so horribly they kind of forgot about Thane until it was too late to do anything meaningful with him. I doubt they'll forget about Solas - though yes, I agree that they'll put the story first, certainly before the romance.

 

I still hope they'll give us options. The reason I've gone back and played the Alistair romance in DAO is because of the almost mind-boggling array of ways that romance can resolve. My favourite ending isn't by any means the happiest - but it's my favourite because I chose it, it worked for my Warden. If it had been the only option available to all of my Wardens I would have been far less satisfied.

About Thane: I was using him as an example of the terrible way LIs - popular LIs - have been treated by the games in the past.  I know the ME team is different, and that the DA team has a better record with how they treat the LIs but it still worries me.

 

Ah, that makes sense - I've played ME very recently, so I didn't know Thane was that popular. That's... urgh. Sad

Again not having played ME so in the comparison I can't really stand.  Solas is obviously resigned to death, possibly feels he deserves it.

 

As an antagonist that makes him scary.  Luckily the DA team made it REALLY hard to not be friends with him.  He liked ALMOST everything you did...ask a question get approval.  Touch some veil artifacts get approval.  Help people get approval. You had to try to not be friends with him.

 

As a friend/lover giving the character what he wants/expects seems too easy.  No real growth of the character that way.

 

I had this problem in my pro-templar Adaar playthrough. My Adaar didn't care for magic, and thought Solas was just weird - knows his stuff, but weird. He still managed to get the balcony convo with Solas though.

 

One of these days, I'm going to manage a playthrough where I slap Solas.

I think not all eyes - be it Thedas or our 'rl' world - see the same way, it depends what they expect to see and how they are prepared to interpret the signal their eyes send to their brain, which based on their experiences/interpretation/cope of/and the way one comes in terms with what is perceived & his/her place in all this.
(although this is getting too philosophical and part scientific, and maybe off theme in this thread, please stop me if im annoying and get out of line..But I really appreciate dai for all the discussions it brought forward..this is a great success on their behalf. I salute them for what they've done and the discussions they have raised)..

When Solas chuckled while talking about the evanuris killing Mythal and how an eternity of torment is a fitting punishment, it really drew my attention. It stood out compared to his general tone and manner in the entire conversation.

In Dalish legends, the Dread Wolf laughed madly with glee for centuries after locking away the Creators in the Beyond.

I just thought it was interesting.

I had a dream last night, that Solas succeed in his plan and all of the modern day elves, but Lavellan, died. Solas tries to help Lavellan to get use to this world and even see that this is for the better, but its no good. Lavellan is just to deep in depression from grief and Solas starts to think that it would be best if he gave her some space.But when he comes back, she's gone. He later finds her where her clan use to frequently camp out and sees her dead body slumped against a tree. She had slit her own throat and bled to death. He then buries her and plants a tree at the foot of her grave, since that is how Dalish bury their dead and giving her a Dalish burial is the least he could do.
Solas, even when he thinks he's won, he actually loses.

thats so sad, and now I saw it again i so much agree that's what he sees of him..fit for eternal torment.
he is so desperate for punishment/way out, he resents/he's losing himself gradually even more,  and keeps going down the same road, making it worse for himself, he sees no way out, deeper and deeper, he is already seeing his death as peace/freedom of guilt/fair punishment.
Someone help him! He is crying out for help so desperately!
I have seen this in dear friends my rl, i really ache for him if noone gets him out of it!
(sorry if is kinda personal, this brings memories of beloved friends of mine, drown in a hellspiral of guilt that they want to end themselves as a salvation, and i will never let this happen when they call for help, if there is something i can do about it..never again as he says..when pain brings you down to this self-punishment/tremendous inside pain for so long, you deserve a second chance to atone by action..heaven(da spirits) and hell(da deamons)  are inside all of us simultaneously

Still catching up with the thread from last night but if you're talking about at the end of Trespasser you have to ask him all the things.  I'm not sure specifically .. wait, let me load up the game.

 

First 2 convo options, choose anything.  Then you should get to a convo wheel with all possible choices.  I asked him all the questions with the question mark icon and then chose "What happens next?" then when I chose Why does this world have to die you get another wheel where you can ask two things, "You gave your orb to Corypheus?" and then "What was supposed to happen."  If you choose What was supposed to happen, Solas will tell you and then your convo wheel should have the option to say "But then the evil gods return" and Solas will say that he had plans.

I once had a dream (I think after the first time Solas broke my heart) of all Lavellans and Solas-es gathering in one place, I search for my Solas (with my magical dowsing-rod-hands) and I get to a stand that sell shnitzels in pitas and realize someone is taking Solas-es one by one and making them into shnitzels!

I was extra disgusted because I'm vegan.

 

And then I woke up.

So...

Solas appears to be one of the most pivotal characters in the entire DA franchise - he created the frikking Veil and now is on a mission to destroy it, which will change the world forever (even if it won't destroy it), in one way or another. Plus, he's been planned since the beginning and is now written by a lead writer.

 

... I'm pretty sure that they're not going to forget a single detail about him

 

I also don't think they'd forget about Lavellan, even if the arc won't be concluded in a way some wish it should be.

 

I mean, the fact alone that they allowed players to romance one of the crucial characters (and main antagonist) in the story - a decision which still baffles me - simply begs for an appropriate conclusion. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's one of more well-known highlights of DA. How many Solavellan playthroughs are there on youtube alone?

 

It'd be hard to just dismiss that plot point, especially if they'd want to keep the image of Solas as determined, but noble antihero with a lot of FEELS (plus, well... didn't Weekes say that they added the romance to make him even sadder  ?)

What was the damn point in the elven artifacts to strengthen the veil? Okay, we could take it that perhaps Solas was lying and it didn't really strengthen anything (I mean, it does uncover a pretty powerful rift), but even the Dalish mage at the first artifact is sure it'd strengthen the veil.

The only thing I can think of is his comment about not being a monster, and he would rather the people who will have to die do it in relative comfort. I suppose the elven artifacts helped ensure there were less rifts, but it I don't know. Thoughts?

I think the ME devs admitted they forgot about some of the romance options when they resolved their arcs. I doubt they'll do the same in the case of Solas, because he's such a prominent and complicated character, who has been quite divisive, so I think they'll likely try extra hard to ensure everyone's satisfied with how his character arc ends.

 

Also, the DA writing team isn't the ME writing team, exception being Weekes.

I'm a big Thanemancer (hence why I can withstand the heart-ache that is Solavellan as well) but it did make me feel angry. The Citadel dlc that came sometime after redeemed them somewhat, but I still didn't like how they chose to end it without giving any options for it to turn out a different way. I'll remain hopeful and optimistic for Solas romance, but I won't be surprised if they'll end it on a similar note to other romances they have done in other games.

Yup,  I think there were a few reasons for what happened to the ME2 LIs in ME3,  I don't think anyone who romanced a ME2 only companion was very satisfied, but Jacob and Thane fans were the most disappointed (I was a mess).  I think it was probably a budget priority issue, not helped by change in writers.  They had made too many LIs over the series to be able to do them justice.

Citadel made the Thane issue slightly less crappy but it was still pretty depressing to play.  I do think that the extent of the Thane content in that dlc was directly a response to the reaction from many unhappy Thane fans who produced art etc to highlight their dissatisfaction with treatment of his character.

I do think that the Dragon Age team and in particular Patrick Weekes were acutely aware that this was a big issue and would not be looking to repeat it.  I also think that Solas is on a whole other level of important than Thane or Jacob plot wise so I'd be very surprised if they skimped on his story, it is just too big.   But I'd be lying if I said I was fully confident in being given a way to save him from himself that doesn't kill him. However, I will be bitterly disappointed if that turns out to be the case.    So ultimately I am very cautious of continuing to be invested in Solavellan and DAI because I don't want to be that disappointed in a game ever again... it hurt too real.

Glad I'm not the only one with dreams that make me wake up and exclaim "What the hell was that, brain!?" (at least before I forget what they were mostly about).

 

Still, my probably only dream about Solavellan is pretty tame and was mostly about me finding out that last DLC was released (some time before we even knew the title of it) and that I enthusiastically went to play it, only to realize that my Lavellan looks completely different from how she should be and that means that something must be bugged - I woke up convinced that what I dreamed happened for real, and I was pissed, because I had to restart the game and go to Black Emporium first to fix her looks
